Schlage L9070P 18B 643E – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage L9070 classroom function actually work at the door?
On the L9070, the latchbolt retracts by lever from either side unless the outside lever is locked by key. Only a key on the outside locks and unlocks it, and the inside lever is always free for immediate egress. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. There is no thumbturn and no deadbolt, so staff cannot secure the door from inside the room without a key.
2) Do I have to specify hand when ordering an L9070?
Yes, the L9070 is a handed lock, so you need to know the hand of the opening before ordering. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your right and the door swings away from you it is right hand, hinges left swinging away is left hand, and doors swinging toward you are the reverse hands. Some competing mortise bodies are field reversible, like the BEST 45H, but this one is ordered handed.
3) Is the strike included with the L9070, and will it work in my existing frame?
A 10-072 strike ships with it: 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, with a 1-3/16 inch lip and a box. That is the standard ANSI mortise strike footprint, so it drops into a frame already prepped for a mortise lock. If your frame has a curved (radius) corner cutout, the square corner strike will not seat cleanly and you will need the matching radius strike instead.
4) Which cylinder option should I pick for the L9070 if my school is on a small format interchangeable core system?
Seven cylinder choices are offered. For SFIC, pick B for less prep core or H for 7-pin SFIC prep with a construction core. For Schlage full size interchangeable core, J is less core, R comes with a core in S123 keyway, and T comes with a construction core. P is the standard conventional 6-pin cylinder in C keyway, and L is less conventional cylinder if you are supplying your own. Note the grade shift: the lock is Grade 1 operational and security with a conventional cylinder, Grade 2 security with FSIC, and Grade 3 security with SFIC.
5) Is the Schlage L9070 fire rated for a labeled classroom door?
Yes. The L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors (the exceptions are the L9076 and L9077, not the L9070), and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and UL symbol on the latch front indicate the listing. It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012, Series 1000, Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, meets ADA requirements, and meets the Buy American Act.
6) I need teachers to be able to lock the classroom door from inside during a lockdown. Is the L9070 the right lock?
No. The L9070 is locked and unlocked only by key from the outside, so a teacher has to step into the corridor to secure the door. For inside locking, look at an intruder or classroom-security function instead: the BEST 45HCA intruder function lockbody, the Marks USA LA318GJ classroom security indicator mortise lockset (Grade 1, 1-3/4 inch doors), or electronic classroom locks such as the Alarm Lock DL3500CR, the TownSteel FME-2000 RFID classroom lock, or the TownSteel FME-4000 electronic intruder classroom lock.
7) What is a cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage L9070 classroom mortise lock?
Two mechanical Grade 1 classroom mortise locksets line up closely with the Schlage L9070: the Corbin Russwin ML2003, a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset in the ML2000 Series rated for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070, a heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, also for 1-3/4 inch doors. The L9070 is itself Grade 1, classroom function, keyed with a single cylinder, on a 2-3/4 inch backset and a 1-3/4 inch door thickness, so all three target the same opening. Differences to settle are keyway and cylinder type, lever design, and finish range.
8) If the classroom door needs to be locked and unlocked without a key, what mortise lock replaces the L9070?
The L9070 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock whose outside lever is locked and unlocked by key only. For keypad or credential operation on a classroom opening, the Alarm Lock DL2700CR is a Grade 1 electronic mortise lock with classroom function and weatherproof design for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors, the DL3500CR is a Grade 1 Trilogy classroom electronic mortise lock with 300 user codes, and the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID. The TownSteel FME-4000 adds electronic intruder classroom function with RFID. Note the Alarm Lock units list a thinner door range than the L9070's 1-3/4 inch.
9) The room should stay locked at all times with free egress, not be lockable from the corridor by key. What mortise lock instead of the L9070?
That is storeroom function, not classroom. The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series with an Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a heavy duty Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option for 1-3/4 inch doors. On the L9070 the latchbolt is retracted by lever from either side unless the outside is locked by key, which suits a room a teacher secures from the corridor rather than one that is permanently secure.
10) What looks like a substitute for the L9070 but is only a lock body or trim, not a complete keyed lockset?
Several mortise items in the same family are not complete keyed locksets. The BEST 45H is a heavy duty mortise lock body with public entrance function and the 45HCA is a heavy duty mortise lockbody with intruder function, both bodies rather than trimmed sets. The Sargent 130KB and 130W are mortise thumbturns, the Falcon MESC600DT is a dummy escutcheon lever trim for M9900 exit devices, and the Emtek 3019, 3102, 3104 and 3106 mortise entrance locksets are dummy function. The Schlage L9070 is a keyed single cylinder classroom lockset supplied with a 10-072 square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip.
11) Does the L9070 fit a 2-1/2 inch backset door prep, or is another mortise lock needed?
The Schlage L9070 is built on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch case. If the door is prepped for a 2-1/2 inch backset, the Baldwin 6301 mortise lock bodies use a 2-1/2 inch backset in entrance/apartment function for 1-3/4 inch and over doors, offered knob by knob and lever by lever, and the Baldwin 6310 uses a 2-1/2 inch backset in entrance/storeroom function for 1-3/8 inch and over, with the 6310190RRLS supplied right hand reverse.
12) What is the ANSI function code for the L9070 so I can match it to my hardware schedule?
F05 is the ANSI/BHMA function designation for the L9070 classroom lock. If your spec sheet calls for F05 classroom, single cylinder with no deadbolt, this is the lock that matches.
13) Can I key several L9070 locks alike, or do they come keyed different?
Both. Keyed different (KD) is the standard, and keyed alike (KA) can be selected when you want a run of classroom doors on one key. There is also a None option if you are ordering less cylinder and keying the locks yourself, plus a free-text field for special cylinder or keying requirements such as a master key system or a non-standard keyway.
14) Will the L9070 levers match my Von Duprin exit devices and other openings?
Yes. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so a building can run the same lever look across mortise locks, electrified locks and exit device trim. Twelve finishes are offered here, from 605 bright brass and 626 satin chrome through 622 matte black, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze, and lever, rose and finish are the same on both sides of the door.
15) What is the difference between the A and B wrought rose and the L and N escutcheon on this lock?
Rose trim (A or B wrought rose) is the compact round plate around the lever. The escutcheons are full plates: L is cast or forged and is available on 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors, N is wrought and available on 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors. Pick an escutcheon when you want to cover old trim marks or thicker doors, and a rose when you are matching a minimal look or existing rose trim elsewhere in the building.
16) Is this lock electronic or can it be wired for access control?
The L9070 is a mechanical lock, not electronic. If the opening needs to be released or monitored electrically, the L Series electrified functions auto detect 12V/24V DC, are customer-selectable EL/EU, and offer RX, DPS, latchbolt monitor and deadbolt monitor. Standalone alternatives we carry include the Schlage CO-100 mortise keypad lock (Grade 1, 1-3/4 inch doors) and the Schlage LEMD ENGAGE wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader.
17) Can a mortise deadbolt be used instead of the L9070 on a classroom door?
A deadbolt alone does not latch the door. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset, the Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a no-handing mortise deadbolt, and the Alarm Lock DL4500 is a Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt with 2,000 user codes and privacy keypad for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors. The Schlage L9070 is a non-deadbolt classroom function in which an auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed and the inside lever stays free for egress.
18) What mortise options cover restroom or dorm doors that the L9070 classroom function does not?
For privacy openings, the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a heavy duty Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. For dormitory corridor doors, the Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. The L9070 is a non-deadbolt classroom function with the inside lever always free for immediate egress.
19) Is the Schlage LE or CO Series mortise lock a drop-in alternative to the L9070?
They are not the same function. The Schlage Electronics CO-100 mortise lock is a Grade 1 standalone electronic unit with privacy function and keypad reader for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the LEBMB-ADD is a Grade 2 mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment functions with a 3 hour fire rating. The LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 wireless ENGAGE mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and mobile-enabled deadbolt. The L9070 is a mechanical Grade 1 keyed classroom lock, and the description notes L Series levers suite with the LE line if you are mixing mechanical and electronic openings.
20) For a behavioral health or ligature-resistant opening, what mortise lockset should be specified rather than the L9070?
The TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in stainless steel with passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim, and the Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. All three are passage rather than keyed classroom. The Schlage L9070 is a keyed classroom function, and the L Series offers a Gold Standard ligature resistant trim for behavioral health applications.
21) The opening only needs to latch with no locking at all. What mortise lock instead of the L9070?
For a passage opening, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Hager 3810S and 3810E are Grade 1 passage mortise locks on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors, the 3810S with rose trim and the 3810E with escutcheon. The Schlage L9070 is keyed with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder as standard, which a passage opening does not need.
22) For an access control opening that needs remote release, what mortise lock is used in place of the mechanical L9070?
The L9070 is a non-electronic lock, though the L Series does offer electrified functions with customer-selectable EL/EU. Among other brands, the Command Access ML190 is a heavy-duty motorized mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU operation, 24VDC power and storeroom function, and the BEST 45HW is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock with 12V/24V operation. Both require power to the opening, which the mechanical L9070 does not.
23) What mortise lock supports card credentials on a classroom or guest door rather than the keyed L9070?
The Dormakaba E-Plex E5086 is a Grade 1 entry/egress electronic pushbutton and card back-to-back mortise lock, the Saffire LX-I-M002 is an electronic RFID mortise lockset with BLE mobile access at BHMA Grade 2, and the Accentra nexTouch NTM623-NR is a Grade 1 mortise lock with a capacitive touchscreen keypad, no deadbolt, with cylinder override. The Schlage L9070 is keyed only, with cylinder choices including conventional 6-pin C keyway, Schlage FSIC, and SFIC prep.
24) How heavy duty is the L9070 lock case, and what is it made of?
Heavy duty, with a case of cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating for corrosion resistance. A security blocking hub prevents lock picking by removing the levers, and the locking lever bushing keeps exposed screws off the inside lever. That construction and the Grade 1 operational rating are why the L9000 holds up on high-traffic school and institutional corridors.
25) Can I get a high security cylinder or a visual indicator on an L9070?
Both are L Series options. A UL437 listed locking cylinder is available by specifying a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder, and Schlage offers the 180 degree visibility indicator so staff can see locked status down the corridor. Other option families include Vandlgard free-wheeling outside trim, tactile warning, anti-microbial coatings, and Gold Standard ligature resistant trim for behavioral health work.
26) What is the 18 lever design on this Schlage mortise lock?
18 is the Schlage lever design code, and the same 18 lever with matching rose and finish is used on both sides of the door. The L Series catalog covers 33 lever designs, two knob designs, five rose and three escutcheon designs, so if 18 does not match the rest of your building there is a design that will. California Referenced Standards Code compliance applies to all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less.
