Schlage L9070P 03B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9070 classroom mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset prep?
That is exactly the prep the L9070 is built for: 2-3/4 inch backset, 1-3/4 inch door thickness. The lock case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, so the door needs a standard mortise pocket cut for that case. One caveat on trim: the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch, so on a 1-3/4 inch door any of the A or B wrought rose or L/N escutcheon options work.
2) How does a classroom function mortise lock actually work when the teacher locks the door?
Classroom function means the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key only, from the outside. There is no inside thumbturn and no way to lock it from within the room. Once locked, the outside lever is rigid and the latchbolt only retracts with the key or the inside lever; the inside lever is always free, so anyone in the room can walk out at any time. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes, which is what stops the latch being carded. If you need staff to lock down from inside the classroom without stepping into the corridor, this function will not do it.
3) Do I need to specify a hand when ordering a Schlage L9070?
Yes, the L9070 is a handed lock, so the order has to state the hand of the opening. Stand outside the door (the key side): if the hinges are on your right and the door swings away from you, it is right hand. Getting this wrong on a mortise lock means the latch bevel faces the wrong way and the door will not latch.
4) Which cylinder option should I pick if my building is already on a Schlage interchangeable core system?
Seven cylinder choices cover the common cases. Running full-size interchangeable core (FSIC) on your masterkey system: J ships less core so you drop in your own, R comes with a core in S123 keyway, and T comes with a construction core for the build phase. On small format interchangeable core (SFIC): B is less prep and less core, H gives 7-pin SFIC prep with a construction core. If you are not on IC at all, P is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in C keyway (the standard cylinder for this lock) and L ships less conventional cylinder if your locksmith is supplying it. Note that going to an interchangeable core changes the security rating: FSIC drops it to Grade 2 security and SFIC to Grade 3, while operational stays Grade 1.
5) Is the Schlage L9070 rated for a fire door?
The L9070 is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how the inspector confirms the listing on the installed door. It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Series 1000, Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, and the lock also meets ADA requirements and the Buy American Act.
6) Will the L9070 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The lock ships with a 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches, square corner, with a 1-3/16 inch lip and a box. If your existing frame has a square corner ANSI strike prep of those dimensions you can reuse it; if the frame carries a radius corner strike or a different lip length, replace it with the supplied one. Lip length matters most on frames with deep stops or an applied trim, since a 1-3/16 inch lip has to reach past the stop for the latch to ride in cleanly.
7) I want a classroom lock staff can secure from inside the room without a key. Is the L9070 the right choice?
No. The L9070 is a mechanical classroom lock keyed from the outside only, with no inside locking, so a teacher has to open the door and key it from the corridor. For inside lockdown, look at an electronic classroom-function mortise lock instead: the Alarm Lock DL3500CR Trilogy is a Grade 1 classroom-function electronic mortise lock with 300 user codes, the TownSteel FME-4000 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty electronic intruder classroom mortise lock with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the TownSteel FME-2000 Series is the RFID classroom version. Note the Alarm Lock units are specified for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors, so confirm your leaf thickness against that range.
8) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to a Schlage L9070 classroom mortise lock?
The Corbin Russwin ML2003 is the nearest match: it is a Grade 1 mortise lockset with a Classroom function for 1-3/4 inch doors, the same door thickness the L9070 is built for. The Cal-Royal NM8070 is another Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors. All three give you a keyed classroom function in a heavy duty mortise case, so the decision comes down to keyway and cylinder program, lever design, and finish rather than function.
9) Which mortise lock should I use if the classroom needs to be lockable from inside the room during a lockdown?
The L9070 classroom function is keyed from the outside only - the latchbolt is retracted by lever from either side unless the outside is locked by key, and the inside lever is always free for egress, so a teacher has to step into the corridor to secure the door. For inside locking, the BEST 45HCAINL is a heavy duty mortise lockbody with an Intruder function, and the TownSteel FME-4000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty electronic intruder classroom mortise lockset with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Marks USA LA318GJ is a Grade 1 classroom security indicator mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors if a visual indication of locked status is what the district is after.
10) Will a Baldwin 6310 mortise lock body drop into the same prep as a Schlage L9070?
No. The L9070 uses a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch case, while the Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock body is a 2-1/2 inch backset, as is the Baldwin 6301 entry/apartment body. A different backset means a different mortise pocket and a different cylinder centerline, so these are not interchangeable in an existing L Series prep even though both are mortise lock bodies.
11) Which classroom mortise lock covers a 1-5/8 inch door?
The L9070 is specified for a 1-3/4 inch door, so a thinner leaf needs a different lock. The Alarm Lock DL2700CR is a Grade 1 Trilogy T2 classroom function electronic mortise lock with a weatherproof design covering 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors, and the DL3500CR covers the same 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch range in classroom function with 300 user codes.
12) What is the difference between the Schlage L9070 and the Corbin Russwin ML2003 or Cal-Royal NM8070 classroom mortise lock?
All three are Grade 1 classroom-function mortise locks for 1-3/4 inch doors, so any of them satisfies a Grade 1 classroom spec on the drawings. The Corbin Russwin ML2003 is from the ML2000 Series and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch. The reason a facility picks the Schlage is usually keying and standardization: the L9070 takes conventional 6-pin C keyway, Schlage FSIC or SFIC cores depending on the cylinder option ordered, so it drops onto an existing Schlage masterkey system, and the levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and the LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products already on the building.
13) Does the Schlage L9070 have a deadbolt?
No deadbolt. The L9070 is a latchbolt-only classroom lock with an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt once the door closes, which is what gives it its security rating without a separate bolt. If the opening needs a true deadbolt, that is a different function or a separate device, such as the Sargent 4874 double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset, which matches the backset the L9070 uses.
14) I am ordering a dozen classroom locks for one building. Can they all be on one key?
Yes. Order them KA (keyed alike) and every lock opens on the same key, which is the normal choice when one person carries the key for a wing or a floor. KD (keyed different) is the standard if each room needs its own key. There is also a less-cylinder option if your locksmith is pinning them into an existing masterkey system, and a free-text field on the order for a specific keyway, master key system, or bitting requirement.
15) What is the ANSI function code for a classroom mortise lock, and does the L9070 match what my spec calls out?
F05 is the ANSI/BHMA function designation the L9070 carries, which is the classroom code. If your architect's hardware schedule calls for an F05 mortise lock at Grade 1 on a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset, this is the lock that answers it.
16) What is the difference between a classroom mortise lock and a storeroom mortise lock?
On the L9070 classroom function the outside lever is unlocked and locked by key, and the inside lever is always free for egress. A storeroom function leaves the outside lever permanently locked and retracts the latch by key only. If the door should never be left unlocked, the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with an Arcadia lever and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors with an interchangeable core option.
17) Do I need a keyed classroom lock on an office or a passage door?
No. The L9070 carries a keyed single-cylinder classroom function, which is more lock than an office or passage opening needs. For an office door, the Cal-Royal NM8050 is a Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 non-keyed office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon on a 2-3/4 inch backset - the same backset the L9070 uses. For a corridor or closet door with no locking at all, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation.
18) What replaces a classroom mortise lock on a dormitory or corridor door?
A classroom function has no deadbolt and the inside lever is always free. The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt, which is the usual choice where a resident needs to throw a bolt from inside the room. The BEST 45HCAC is a heavy duty mortise lock body with a Public Entrance function and field reversible operation for corridor openings that stay unlocked during the day.
19) Is a Sargent 4874 deadbolt or a Sargent 130KB thumbturn a substitute for a classroom mortise lock?
No, and they are frequently mistaken for one. The L9070 is a complete keyed classroom mortise lockset with lever trim and a 10-072 square corner box strike. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset - bolt only, no latch and no lever - and the Sargent 130KB is a standard duty mortise thumbturn, a trim piece. Neither latches a door or provides classroom function on its own.
20) Which mortise lock should I specify for a behavioral health room instead of a standard classroom lever lock?
The L9070 uses a conventional 03 lever, which is a graspable projecting lever. For anti-ligature openings, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset, ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. All three are passage function, so they secure nothing by key - use them where the opening does not need to be locked.
21) Which mortise lock do I use if the classroom door needs to be released from an access control panel?
The L9070 is a mechanical lock with no electrified option in its keyed classroom build. For a door tied to access control, the Command Access ML190 is a heavy-duty motorized mortise lock in storeroom function with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC, and the BEST 45HW is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock running 12V or 24V. Both put the locking decision on the panel rather than on a key at the door.
22) What is the difference between the Schlage L9070 and the Schlage LE and CO electronic mortise locks?
The L9070 is a mechanical Grade 1 keyed classroom mortise lock for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and Greenwich trim, right hand, fire rated 3 hours. The CO-100-MS-40-KP is a Grade 1 heavy duty standalone electronic mortise lock in privacy function with a keypad reader for 1-3/4 inch doors. The LEBMB-ADD mobile-enabled mortise lock is Grade 2 with a 3 hour fire rating, covering privacy, office and apartment functions. If you need classroom function specifically, note that none of those three list it.
23) Which mortise locks are keyless if I want to stop rekeying classroom doors?
The L9070 ships with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder and is offered with FSIC and SFIC interchangeable core prep options, which is one way to cut rekeying labor without leaving keys behind. If you want no cylinder at all, the Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 is an electronic pushbutton keyless mortise lock, and the PowerPlex P2066 is a mortise lock in the same pushbutton family. The Accentra NTM623-NR nexTouch Generation 3 mortise lock uses a capacitive touchscreen keypad with cylinder override and no deadbolt if you want to keep a key as a backup.
24) What mortise lock works on an aluminum storefront classroom door instead of a Schlage L9070?
The L9070 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door with a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch mortise case, which is a hollow metal or wood door prep, not a narrow aluminum stile. The Alarm Lock DL1300NW is a Trilogy Networx wireless electronic mortise lock with keypad made for Adams Rite deadlatches, and the Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 is listed for wide stile aluminum. Confirm the stile width before ordering either.
25) Which mortise lock adds card and PIN access on a classroom door where two sides need credential control?
The L9070 is keyed on the outside only and free on the inside. The Dormakaba E-Plex E5086 is a Grade 1 entry/egress electronic pushbutton and card lock in a back to back mortise configuration, which puts credential entry on both faces of the door. The Dormakaba Saffire LX-I-M002 is an electronic RFID mortise lockset with BLE mobile access at BHMA Grade 2 if mobile credentials are the priority.
26) Will the L9070 match the finish on the rest of the door hardware in the building?
Twelve finishes are available: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless are the two that turn up most in schools and commercial corridors. The lock also comes in four trim styles, A and B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon and N wrought escutcheon, with the 03 lever design, so it can be matched to what is already hung on the other openings.
27) Both sides of the door get the same lever and trim on a Schlage L9070, right?
Correct. As standard it ships with the same 03 lever, rose and finish on both faces, plus the matching latch and strike. So one order covers the whole opening, and you are not sourcing an inside trim separately.
28) Can I use an Emtek 3104 Hamilton mortise entrance set in place of a classroom lock?
No. The Emtek 3104 Hamilton, 3102 Memphis, 3106 Manhattan and 3019 Brisbane mortise entrance locksets are dummy function - trim with no working latch or cylinder, used on inactive leaves. The L9070 is a keyed single cylinder Grade 1 commercial classroom lockset. A dummy set cannot secure or latch an opening.
29) Is a Marks USA 21AC or 22AC ornamental iron mortise lock a substitute for a commercial classroom lock?
No. The Marks USA 21AC and 22AC are entrance double cylinder ornamental iron mortise locks with a round knob, built for 1 inch doors - a gate and iron door application. The L9070 is a Grade 1 commercial classroom lockset for a 1-3/4 inch door with lever trim. The door thickness alone rules out the swap.
30) Which mortise lock has a lighter duty rating than a Grade 1 classroom lock for a low traffic interior door?
The L9070 is a heavy duty Grade 1 mortise lock. Where the traffic does not justify that, the Codelocks CL2255 is a medium duty electronic tubular mortise latch in brushed steel. Understand that it is a latch with code entry rather than a keyed heavy duty lockset, so it belongs on interior doors that see light use, not a main classroom corridor.
