1) How does the Schlage L9456 corridor function actually work on a dorm or apartment door?
The L9456 is a corridor (dormitory) mortise lock. Either lever always retracts the latchbolt, so the door is normally unlocked for passage. The deadbolt is thrown or retracted by the key outside or by the thumbturn inside, and throwing the deadbolt locks the outside lever. Turning the inside lever pulls back both the deadbolt and the latchbolt and unlocks the outside lever again, so the inside is always free for immediate egress. That single motion on the way out is why this function is used on dorm rooms and apartments: the occupant cannot get trapped behind their own deadbolt.
2) Will the Schlage L9456 mortise lock fit my door, and what prep does it need?
It is built for a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the standard commercial opening. The lock case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches and the armor front is 1-1/4 x 8 inches, so the mortise pocket has to be cut to that. If your doors are thinner or thicker than 1-3/4 inches, this is not the right configuration as listed.
3) What strike comes with the Schlage L9456 and will it drop into my existing frame cutout?
The lock ships with the 10-072 strike, a 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip. That is the standard ANSI mortise frame prep, so if your frame is already cut for a square corner ANSI strike of that size it drops straight in. Frames prepped for a radius corner strike or a different lip length will need the correct strike ordered instead.
4) Do I get a cylinder with the Schlage L9456, or do I have to order one separately?
That depends on the cylinder option you pick. Choose P and you get a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, which is Schlage's standard keyway. Choose L and the lock comes less the conventional cylinder. J is prepped for Schlage full-size interchangeable core but ships less core, and B is prepped for small format interchangeable core less core. With J or B you are supplying your own cores, usually because the building is already on an IC system.
5) Is the Schlage L9456 rated for a fire door?
The L9000 family is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and the L9456 is not among the exceptions (only L9076 and L9077 are). Listing covers A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet, with the letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front to show it. The lock is also certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, and meets ADA requirements.
6) Does using an interchangeable core drop the security grade of the L9456?
It does. With the conventional cylinder the lock is ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security. Put full-size interchangeable core cylinders in it and it stays Grade 1 operational but the security rating becomes Grade 2. With small format interchangeable core it is Grade 1 operational, Grade 3 security. If a spec on the drawing calls for Grade 1 security, order the conventional cylinder version.
7) What is the closest equivalent to the Schlage L9456 corridor mortise lock from another manufacturer?
The Sargent 7925 is the nearest cross-brand match. 10) Will a Baldwin 6301 or 6310 mortise lock body drop into the same prep as the L9456?
No. The Baldwin 6301 entry/apartment and 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock bodies are built on a 2-1/2 inch backset, while the L9456 uses a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch case and a 10-072 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip. The cutout and strike prep differ, so treat them as separate preps rather than interchangeable bodies.
11) Can I key a batch of L9456 locks alike so one key runs the whole building?
Yes. Keying is a required selection: keyed different (the standard) or keyed alike when you want several locks on one key. There is also a less-cylinder path if you are pinning your own. Note the lock is single cylinder, so the outside takes the key and the inside is a thumbturn.
