1) Will the Schlage L9456 corridor mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
1-3/4 inches is exactly what the L9456 is built for, with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The lock case is 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, so the door needs a standard ANSI mortise pocket. If your doors are thicker than 1-3/4, the L Series does offer different door thickness options, but the base configuration here is the single 1-3/4 inch thickness that covers nearly all commercial openings.
2) What does the corridor deadbolt function actually do when someone is inside the room?
The L9456 keeps the inside lever free at all times. Throwing the deadbolt by key from outside or by the inside thumbturn locks the outside lever, but turning the inside lever retracts both the deadbolt and the latchbolt at once and unlocks the outside lever. So egress is a single motion, no matter how the lock was left. That behavior is why this function shows up on dorm rooms, patient rooms, and corridor doors where a locked door still has to let people out immediately.
3) Is the Schlage L9456 approved for a fire rated corridor door?
The L9000 latch is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and the UL/cUL listing covers A label single doors up to 4 x 10 feet and pairs up to 8 x 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how you verify the listing on the part in your hand. The lock is also certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Series 1000, Grade 1 Operational and Grade 1 Security, and it meets ADA requirements.
4) Do I lose Grade 1 security if I order the L9456 with an interchangeable core?
Yes, and the drop depends on which core. With Schlage FSIC interchangeable core cylinders the lock is Grade 1 Operational, Grade 2 Security. With small format (SFIC) cores it is Grade 1 Operational, Grade 3 Security. Only the conventional cylinder configuration holds A156.13 Grade 1 on both counts. Classroom function has no thumbturn: it is locked and unlocked by key from the outside only, so an occupant cannot lock themselves in. Take corridor for dorm rooms, hotel-style rooms and patient rooms. 8) I want keypad or credential access on this door instead of a key - which mortise lock replaces the L9456?

Ligature resistant trim is the deciding factor there. 16) Is the Schlage LE Series mortise lock the same grade as the L9456?
No. The Schlage Electronics LEBMB-ADD mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED, offering privacy, office and apartment functions for 1-3/4 inch doors, is Grade 2 with a 3 hour fire rating. The Schlage L9456 is Grade 1 and heavy duty. If a spec on the drawing calls for Grade 1 mortise hardware, the LEBMB does not satisfy it and the ENGAGE LEMD-GRW, which is Grade 1 with a 3 hour fire rating, is the closer electronic option.
17) Which mortise lock should I use for an apartment or tenant entry door instead of the L9456?
Baldwin's 6301 is an entry/apartment mortise lock body on a 2-1/2 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 inch and over, offered knob by knob or as the 6301LS lever by lever. The 6310 is the entry/storeroom version on the same 2-1/2 inch backset for doors 1-3/8 inch and over, with the 6310190RRLS as a right hand reverse lever by lever build. The backset is the thing to check: those Baldwin bodies are 2-1/2 inch while the Schlage L9456 is 2-3/4 inch, so the door prep is not interchangeable.
18) Which mortise lock should I look at for a classroom that needs lockdown from inside the room?
The TownSteel FME-4000 Series is an electronic intruder classroom mortise lockset with RFID technology, Grade 1 heavy duty for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the FME-2000 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID on the same door thickness. Keyed alike is the choice when one key should open a group of doors, for example a staff key across a wing. There is also a free text field for special cylinder or keying requirements, which is where you note an existing masterkey system or a specific keyway. If you would rather key them yourself, order the L option, less conventional cylinder, and fit your own.
26) Can I use the Kaba Ilco 185 Series in place of a Schlage L9456?
Not as a like-for-like. The Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a deadbolt-function mortise lock supplied with no handing. It addresses the bolt half of the job only. The Schlage L9456 is a Grade 1 keyed corridor lock whose inside lever retracts both the deadbolt and the latchbolt in one motion and unlocks the outside lever, with the inside lever always free for immediate egress. 28) The door is a restroom or a bedroom - do I need a keyed corridor lock or something simpler?
A privacy function is the simpler fit.
