Schlage L9473P 01A 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage L9473 dormitory/bedroom function actually work on a student room or apartment door?
The latchbolt retracts with the lever from either side, so nobody gets locked in and the door is always free to exit. Security comes from the deadbolt, which is thrown or retracted by key on the outside or by thumbturn on the inside. That is the classic dorm room or apartment unit setup: the occupant throws the bolt from inside, staff or the resident uses the key from the corridor side.
2) Will the Schlage L9473 fit my door and existing mortise prep?
It is built for a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the standard commercial mortise prep. The lock case is 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch and the armor front is 1-1/4 x 8 inches. If your existing pocket was cut for another L9000 mortise lock, it drops straight in. Thicker doors are not covered by the standard configuration.
3) Can I order the L9473 to work on my building's existing key system?
Yes. The standard build is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in C keyway, and you can choose keyed different or keyed alike at the time of order. If your facility runs interchangeable cores, order it with the J option (Schlage FSIC, less core) or B (SFIC, less prep core) and drop in your own cores. The L option is less conventional cylinder if you are supplying your own. Note the grade shift: with FSIC cores the assembly is Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security, and with SFIC it is Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security.
4) Is the Schlage L9473 mortise lock approved for a fire-rated door?
Yes. The L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors (the L9076 and L9077 are the exceptions), and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how you confirm the listing on the part in hand.
5) Does the L9473 meet ANSI Grade 1 and ADA for a school or healthcare facility?
It is certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Series 1000, Grade 1 for both operational and security, and it meets ADA requirements. Levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less also comply with the California Referenced Standards Code, and the line meets the Buy American Act. There are Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings as well.
6) We want keypad or credential access on dorm room doors instead of keys. What mortise locks replace the L9473?
The L9473 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock. For credential access on the same mortise prep, the Schlage CO-100 is a Grade 1 heavy duty standalone electronic mortise lock with a keypad reader for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Schlage Electronics LEBMB-ADD is a mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office, and apartment functions on 1-3/4 inch doors at Grade 2 with a 3 hour fire rating.
7) I need a mortise lock for a dorm room but the opening is a classroom, not a bedroom. What should I order instead of the L9473?
Use a classroom-function mortise lock rather than the L9473, whose dormitory/bedroom function puts a thumbturn on the inside. The Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, also for 1-3/4 inch doors.
8) Is a privacy mortise lock a substitute for the L9473 on a bedroom door?
No. The L9473 is keyed with a single cylinder, so the outside key throws the deadbolt for staff or management access. A privacy lockset such as the Cal-Royal NM8440, a Grade 1 privacy/bed/bath mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, or the Hager 3840S Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset, locks from the inside only. Choose the privacy models where no key access is wanted and the L9473 where it is.
9) Can I use a Baldwin 6301 apartment mortise lock in place of the Schlage L9473?
Only if the door prep matches. The Baldwin 6301 entry/apartment mortise lock bodies, offered knob by knob and lever by lever, use a 2-1/2 inch backset and are listed for doors 1-3/4 inch and over. The L9473 uses a 2-3/4 inch backset on a 1-3/4 inch door, so the two are not interchangeable in an existing mortise pocket without re-prepping the door edge.
10) What strike comes with the L9473 and will it work in my existing frame cutout?
It ships with the 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, box type, with a 1-3/16 inch lip. That is the standard ANSI square-corner frame prep. If your frame is prepped for a curved-lip or T-strike, or the lip length does not reach past your stop, you will need a different strike than the one supplied.
11) What is the difference between the L9473 and a classroom or storeroom mortise lock?
The L9473 is an occupant-controlled function: the door is never locked against exit, and the deadbolt is thrown by the person inside with a thumbturn or by key outside. A classroom function like the Corbin Russwin ML2003 or the Cal-Royal NM8070 locks the outside lever instead, controlled by key, with no occupant thumbturn. A storeroom function such as the Cal-Royal NM8080 or Accentra 8805FL keeps the outside lever locked at all times. Choose the L9473 for dorm rooms, apartments and guest bedrooms; choose classroom or storeroom for spaces where the occupant should not control locking.
12) What trim and finish choices do I have to specify when ordering the L9473?
Trim is the 01 lever design, and you pick the rose or escutcheon: A wrought rose, B wrought rose, L full face escutcheon, or N escutcheon. Both sides of the door get the same lever, rose and finish, with matching latch and strike. Twelve finishes are offered, from 605 bright brass and 606 satin brass through 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless, plus 643E aged bronze. Escutcheon versus rose is usually decided by what is already on the other doors, since the escutcheon covers more of the face.
13) Will the L9473 levers match the exit devices and other Schlage locks already in my building?
Yes. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so you can run one lever design and finish across mortise locks, exit device trim and electrified openings. The L Series will also key-suite across tubular, exit device and multipoint locks.
14) Is the deadbolt on the Schlage L9473 secure against sawing or lever removal?
Deadbolt functions in the L9000 line carry an anti-saw pin inside the bolt to stop cut-through, and a security blocking hub keeps the lock from being picked by pulling the levers off. Bolt and case are CRS with zinc dichromate plating. The line is also rated ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 and UL listed.
15) Do I need a full lockset like the L9473 if I only need a deadbolt on the door?
No. The L9473 combines a lever latch with a keyed deadbolt in one mortise case measuring 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch. If the opening only needs a bolt, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset, matching the L9473's backset, and the Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a no-handing mortise deadbolt lock.
16) What mortise lock should I use for a behavioral health room instead of the L9473?
For ligature resistant openings, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01 is the satin stainless arch trim version, also Grade 1 passage for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both are passage function, so they do not key or deadbolt the way the L9473 does with its outside key and inside thumbturn.
17) What is the difference between the L9473 and a Grade 1 office or entrance mortise lockset?
An office lock leaves the outside lever unlocked or locked by the inside, without a keyed deadbolt for the occupant. The Cal-Royal NM8050 is a Grade 1 heavy duty office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon, non-keyed, on a 2-3/4 inch backset. The L9473 is keyed with a single cylinder and adds a deadbolt operated by outside key or inside thumbturn.
18) For a dorm suite entry that needs credential audit and classroom lockdown, what replaces the mechanical L9473?
The TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID technology for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the FME-4000 adds electronic intruder classroom function with RFID, also Grade 1 heavy duty on 1-3/4 inch doors. The L9473 is a heavy duty mechanical lock with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder and no electronics.
19) We already use BEST interchangeable cores. Is a BEST 45H lock body a substitute for the L9473?
Not for the same opening. The BEST 45H Series is a heavy duty mortise lock body in public entrance function with field reversible operation, and the 45HCA intruder version covers lockdown openings; neither is a dormitory function. If keying is the driver, the L9473 is offered with an SFIC less prep core, a Schlage FSIC less core, or less conventional cylinder so you can fit your own core while keeping dormitory function.
20) Can I upgrade the L9473 cylinder to a high-security keyway?
Yes. A UL437 listed locking cylinder is available on the L Series; specify a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder in place of the standard conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. Order the lock with the L cylinder option (less conventional cylinder) if you are supplying the high-security cylinder yourself.
21) Is a Sargent 130KB thumbturn an alternative to ordering the L9473?
No. The Sargent 130KB and 130W are standard duty mortise thumbturns, trim pieces from the 8200 and 7800 Series respectively, not lock bodies. The L9473 is a complete Grade 1 mortise lockset with lever trim and its own inside thumbturn for the deadbolt, supplied with a 10-072 square corner box strike.
