Schlage L9473P 03A 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage L9473 dormitory/bedroom function actually work on a resident room door?
The latchbolt retracts by lever from either side, so nobody gets locked in. Security comes from the separate deadbolt, which is thrown or retracted by key from the outside or by thumbturn from the inside. That makes it a single-cylinder lock: the resident bolts the door from inside with the thumbturn, staff key the deadbolt from the corridor side.
2) Will the L9473 mortise lock fit my door, and what prep does it need?
It is built for 1-3/4 inch doors with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The lock case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch, the armor front is 1-1/4 x 8 inches, and it ships with the 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches square corner with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your existing mortise pocket was cut for a different case depth or backset, the door needs re-prep.
3) Can I use this Schlage L9473 on a fire rated dorm room door?
Yes. The L9000 latch is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors (the exceptions in the series are the L9076 and L9077, not the L9473), and the series carries UL/cUL listing for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and UL symbol stamped on the latch front identify the listing.
4) What cylinder do I have to specify on the L9473, and can I get it prepped for our existing SFIC core system?
Four choices on the cylinder. P is the conventional 6-pin cylinder in C keyway, which is the standard supply. B is SFIC less core, J is Schlage FSIC less core, and L is less conventional cylinder if you are supplying your own. Be aware of the grade effect: with FSIC interchangeable cores the lock is Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security, with SFIC cores it is Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security. With the standard conventional cylinder it is Grade 1 on both counts.
5) Is the L9473 the right lock for an apartment or hotel guest room, or should I use a storeroom function?
Dormitory/bedroom is the function for sleeping rooms: free egress by lever both sides plus a deadbolt the occupant controls with a thumbturn from inside. A storeroom function has no inside thumbturn and keeps the outside lever locked at all times, which is what you want on a closet or mechanical room, not a bedroom. If you need storeroom instead, the Cal-Royal NM8080 and the Accentra 8805FL are Grade 1 mortise storeroom locksets.
6) What is the closest equivalent to the Schlage L9473 dormitory mortise lock from another manufacturer?
The Sargent 7925 is the nearest peer. It is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lock in the 7900 Series with a dormitory exit function, rose trim, and a single cylinder deadbolt. The Schlage L9473 is also Grade 1 and heavy duty, with a dormitory/bedroom function in which the latchbolt is retracted by lever from either side and the deadbolt is thrown or retracted by key outside or thumbturn inside. Both give you a keyed deadbolt on a dormitory-style opening; the Schlage offers wrought rose, full face escutcheon, and escutcheon trim options, while the Sargent 7925 is specified with rose trim.
7) What is the difference between the Schlage L9473 and a storeroom mortise lock like the Accentra 8805FL?
Function. The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series with an Arcadia lever, so the outside lever stays locked and is retracted only by key. The Schlage L9473 is a dormitory/bedroom function: the latchbolt retracts by lever from either side at all times, and security comes from a separate deadbolt thrown by outside key or inside thumbturn. Use the storeroom function for a stock or utility room, the L9473 where an occupant needs to deadbolt from inside. Cal-Royal's NM8080 is another Grade 1 storeroom mortise option.
8) What mortise lock should be specified instead of the L9473 for a classroom door?
The Schlage L9473 is a dormitory/bedroom function with a deadbolt controlled by outside key or inside thumbturn, which is not a classroom arrangement. For a classroom, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors in the ML2000 Series, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, also for 1-3/4 inch doors. If the district wants a visual status indicator, the Marks USA LA318GJ is a Grade 1 classroom security indicator mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors.
9) Will the 03 lever on this Schlage lock match the levers on our exit devices and our other L Series openings?
It will. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so the 03 lever design and finish carry across a building that mixes mortise locks, exit device trim and electronic locks. Pick the same finish code and the same 03 design on each opening.
10) Does the L9473 deadbolt resist attack, and will pulling the lever off defeat the lock?
Deadbolt functions in the L9000 series include an anti-saw pin in the bolt to stop cut-through, and a security blocking hub prevents picking the lock by removing the levers. The lock body is CRS with zinc dichromate plating, and the series is tested to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 security and operational plus ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40.
11) Does this lever lock meet ADA and does it qualify for a federally funded project?
The L Series meets ADA requirements and complies with the California Referenced Standards Code for levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less. It also meets the Buy American Act, and the series carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings for hurricane-zone work.
12) I need a higher security cylinder in this dorm lock. What are my options?
A UL437 listed cylinder is available on the L Series: specify a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder in place of the standard conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. If you order the lock as L (less conventional cylinder), you can install that cylinder yourself. Use the keying selection to set KD keyed different, KA keyed alike across a group of doors, or no keying when you are supplying cores.
13) Is there an electronic or credential-reading equivalent if I want to move our dorm rooms off brass keys?
The L9473 is a mechanical lock with no electronics. For credential access on the same kind of opening, Schlage Electronics offers the LEMD-GRW, a Grade 1 ENGAGE wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a mobile-enabled deadbolt with LED, 3-hour fire rated, and the LEBMB-ADD mobile-enabled mortise lock covering privacy, office and apartment functions on 1-3/4 inch doors. TownSteel's FME-2000 is another Grade 1 RFID mortise option for 1-3/4 inch doors.
14) My doors are thicker than 1-3/4 inches. Can I still use a Schlage L9473?
As catalogued, this lock is set up for 1-3/4 inch doors, the standard commercial thickness. The L Series options portfolio does include different door thickness variants, so a thicker door has to be handled as an option rather than the standard build. If you would rather stay with a stock lock, the Hager 3800 Series mortise locks cover 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inches, and Baldwin's 6301 lever mortise body is listed for 1-3/4 inches and over, though neither is a dormitory deadbolt function.
15) If the apartment door does not need a keyed deadbolt, what mortise lock should be used instead of the L9473?
Look at the Cal-Royal NM8440, a heavy duty Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with a deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors. It gives you the deadbolt on a bed/bath privacy function rather than the keyed outside cylinder of the L9473, which is a single cylinder keyed dormitory/bedroom lock. The Hager 3840S is another Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset, matching the L9473 backset for the same door prep.
16) Is the Sargent 4874 mortise deadbolt a substitute for the Schlage L9473?
No. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset in the 4870 Series - a deadbolt only, with no latchbolt and no lever. The Schlage L9473 is a complete mortise lockset combining a latchbolt retracted by the 03 lever from either side with a deadbolt operated by outside key or inside thumbturn. The 4874 would need a separate latch or passage set to complete the opening. The Kaba Ilco 185 Series is likewise a deadbolt function mortise lock, not a lockset with lever trim.
17) What keyless or electronic mortise lock can replace the Schlage L9473 on a dorm or apartment door?
The Schlage L9473 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock keyed with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. If the building is moving to credentials, the Schlage Electronics LEBMB-ADD is a mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment functions on 1-3/4 inch doors with a 3 hour fire rating, and the Dormakaba E-Plex E5086 is a Grade 1 entry/egress pushbutton and card mortise lock. Both change how the door is credentialed, so keying and access control planning has to be revisited.
18) For a behavioral health or ligature resistant room, is the L9473 the right mortise lock?
The Schlage L9473 is a standard 03 lever dormitory/bedroom lock with a projecting lever and an inside thumbturn, neither of which is a ligature resistant form. For those rooms, TownSteel offers the MRX-L-01, a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01, a Grade 1 passage mortise lockset with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim. Note both are passage function, so they do not provide the keyed deadbolt the L9473 carries.
19) Which mortise lock matches the L9473 if the door is thicker than 1-3/4 inches?
The Schlage L9473 as catalogued is built for a 1-3/4 inch door. Hager's 3800 Series covers a wider range: the 3810E passage mortise lock with escutcheon and the 3850E office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon both list 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch doors on a 2-3/4 inch backset, the same backset the L9473 uses. Those Hager units are passage and office functions, so they do not carry the L9473 keyed deadbolt.
20) If I need small format interchangeable core keying across a building, how does the L9473 compare with other mortise locks?
The Schlage L9473 can be ordered with an SFIC less prep core, a Schlage FSIC less core, less conventional cylinder, or a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, so it drops into either an FSIC or SFIC keying program. Among mortise peers, the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a heavy duty Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset offered with an interchangeable core option, though it is a storeroom function rather than the L9473 dormitory/bedroom function with its keyed deadbolt and inside thumbturn.
21) What finishes and rose or escutcheon styles does the Schlage L9473 come in?
Twelve finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. Trim comes as A or B wrought rose, L full face escutcheon, or N escutcheon. The lever, rose and finish are the same on both sides of the door, with coordinating latch and strike.
22) Can I add a status indicator or free-wheeling trim to this L Series mortise lock?
Both exist in the L Series options portfolio. The 180 degree visibility indicator shows locked status from the corridor, and Vandlgard free-wheeling outside trim is offered on most functions, including electrified ones, to protect the lock when someone hangs on the lever. Other options include tactile warning, anti-microbial coatings, and Gold Standard ligature resistant trim for behavioral health rooms.
23) What is the difference between the Schlage L9473 and an Emtek mortise entrance lockset like the 3102 Memphis?
The Emtek 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton, 3106 Manhattan and 3019 Brisbane mortise entrance locksets are all dummy function - decorative trim with no operating latch or bolt, used on inactive leaves. The Schlage L9473 is a commercial Grade 1 heavy duty keyed mortise lock with an operating latchbolt and a deadbolt thrown by outside key or inside thumbturn. A dummy set is not a substitute on any door that has to latch or lock.
