Schlage L9486P 06A 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9486 mortise lock fit my door, and what backset and thickness does it need?
The L9486 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the standard commercial mortise prep. The lock case is 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches and the armor front is 1-1/4 x 8 inches, so the pocket has to be cut for that case. It is a handed lock, so you need to know the swing before you order. Other door thicknesses are available as a factory option on the L Series, but the base configuration is single-thickness.
2) What strike comes with the Schlage L9486 and will it work in my existing frame prep?
Shipping strike is the Schlage 10-072, a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your frame is already prepped for a standard ANSI mortise strike cutout, that drops straight in. Round corner frames or a different lip length for a deeper stop reveal are ordered as options, so measure from the frame face to the door face before you commit.
3) Can I key the Schlage L9486 into my existing master key system?
As shipped it takes a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, which is Schlage's standard commercial keyway. If your building runs a different keyway or you key your own cylinders, order the L option (less conventional cylinder) and install the cylinder your system uses. Note the security grading changes with the cylinder: with a full-size interchangeable core it is Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security, and with a small format IC it is Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security. A UL437 cylinder is available by specifying a Primus 20-500 Series.
4) Is the Schlage L9486 approved for a fire rated restroom door?
Yes. The L9000 mortise family is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how the inspector confirms the listing on the installed lock. It also carries ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 security and operational, meets ADA requirements, and complies with Buy American Act procurement.
5) Should I use a mortise indicator lock like the L9486 or a separate indicator deadbolt above a passage set?
Two different approaches. The L9486 puts latch, deadbolt, indicator and keyed override in one mortise case, so a single prep controls the whole opening and the inside lever pulls the deadbolt back with it for egress. The alternative is a standalone indicator deadbolt over a passage set, like the Hager 3216 thumbturn-by-indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors, or the Arrow E50 non-keyed exit deadlock with a vacant/occupied indicator. Those need a second bore and a second motion to exit, which is usually the reason a spec writer chooses the mortise instead on institutional restrooms.
6) Is the Accentra AUYPL02 a substitute for a Schlage L9486 faculty restroom lock?
They solve different openings. The Accentra AUYPL02 is a Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with a visual status indicator in the YPL Series - privacy/bed/bath function, no outside key. The Schlage L9486 is a keyed single cylinder mortise lock in the Faculty/Hotel/Restroom function: the latchbolt is retracted by key outside or lever inside, the outside lever is always fixed, and when the inside thumbturn throws the deadbolt all keys go inoperative except the emergency key. If staff need key access from the corridor when the room is unoccupied, the AUYPL02 does not do that job; if the door only needs occupied/vacant privacy on a cylindrical prep, it does.
7) I only need an occupied/vacant indicator deadbolt on a single-occupancy restroom, not a full mortise lockset - what can I use instead of the Schlage L9486?
An indicator deadbolt paired with existing passage trim covers that. The Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn x occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors and carries a fire rating. The Cal-Royal IND90-G2 is a Grade 1 indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn, and the Cal-Royal IND84 is a Grade 3 indicator deadbolt with the same thumbturn x indicator function. The Schlage L9486 differs in that it is one heavy duty Grade 1 mortise case combining the latch, the deadbolt and the keyed outside cylinder in a single 4-7/16 inch x 6-1/16 inch x 1 inch body.
8) What is the difference between the Schlage L9486 and the Falcon H2171 public restroom lock with occupancy indicator?
The Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 interconnected lock in the H2 Series with a single cylinder deadbolt, an occupancy indicator, and a Storeroom/Public Restroom function. The Schlage L9486 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lock in the Faculty/Hotel/Restroom function, with a 2-3/4 inch backset, a 1-3/4 inch door thickness, and a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder as standard. The H2171 is an interconnected lock, so it uses a bored and cross-bored prep rather than a mortise pocket, and the two are not interchangeable in an existing door without changing the door prep.
9) What is the difference between the Schlage L9486 and the L9485 faculty restroom lock?
Same deadbolt function on both, and the numbers share the same operation: key outside retracts the latchbolt only, outside lever fixed, deadbolt by inside thumbturn, all keys dead except the emergency key when it is thrown, inside lever pulls both bolts for egress. What the L9486 adds is the 180 degree visibility indicator on the outside, so the door reads occupied or vacant at a glance. If you do not need the do not disturb readout, the plain faculty restroom function covers the same opening.
10) What do I have to specify when ordering a Schlage L9486?
Four choices build the part number. Cylinder: P for the conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, or L for less cylinder if you supply your own. Lever design: 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 12, 17 or 18. Rose or escutcheon: A or B wrought rose, N escutcheon, or L full face escutcheon. Finish: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, or 630 satin stainless. Hand is required as well, since the lock is handed. Same lever, rose and finish go on both sides with matching latch and strike.
11) Will the Schlage L9486 levers match the exit devices and other locks already in my building?
They will if the rest of the building is Allegion. L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so one lever design and finish carries across mortise locks, exit device trim and multipoint locks on the same floor. The L Series also suites across tubular, exit device and multipoint locks, which is what makes it practical to standardize a whole facility on one look. Eight finishes are offered here, from 605 bright brass through 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless.
12) Does the Schlage L9486 need power or wiring run to the door?
No wiring. The L9486 is a fully mechanical mortise lock, so nothing is required at the frame beyond the strike prep. If the opening later needs access control, the L Series does offer electrified functions that auto detect 12V or 24V DC with selectable fail safe or fail secure and options like RX, DPS, latchbolt monitor and deadbolt monitor, but those are separate lock numbers, not an add-on to this one.
13) I need a restroom indicator lock that also lets staff key in from outside. Which of these actually does that?
The L9486 does, and that is what separates it from most indicator hardware. It is a single cylinder keyed mortise lock, so staff carry a key that retracts the latchbolt from the corridor side any time the deadbolt is not thrown. Among the alternatives, the Falcon H2171 is the other keyed one, a Grade 2 public restroom interconnected lock with an occupancy indicator and single cylinder deadbolt. The Emtek thumbturn privacy bolts and the Arrow E50 are non-keyed, so a staff override is not part of them.
14) Which indicator lock options are Grade 1 for a high traffic institutional restroom?
Three in the indicator group carry a Grade 1 rating: the Schlage L9486, a heavy duty keyed mortise lock in the Faculty/Hotel/Restroom function; the Accentra AUYPL02 YPL Series privacy cylindrical lock with visual status indicator; and the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL extra heavy duty privacy visual status lever lock, which is fire rated and fits 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. The Cal-Royal IND90-G2 indicator deadbolt with ADA thumbturn is also Grade 1. The L9486 is the only one of the four that is keyed and mortise, so it is the standardization choice where the facility wants master keyed access on restroom doors.
15) Is a Schlage L9486 needed if the door only opens outward from the inside and just needs a vacant/occupied indicator?
For an exit-only opening, the Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 non-keyed exit deadlock with a vacant/occupied indicator on the outside, for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Falcon D271 is a Grade 2 medium duty deadbolt with an occupancy indicator in a one-sided function with the thumbturn inside. Neither has an outside key cylinder. The Schlage L9486 is the choice when the outside needs key entry: it is a keyed single cylinder Grade 1 mortise lock whose outside lever is always fixed and whose inside lever retracts both deadbolt and latchbolt for immediate egress.
16) Can I add an indicator deadbolt to an existing door instead of replacing the whole lock with a Schlage L9486?
Yes, where the opening allows a separate bolt. The Accentra D292 is a Grade 2 cylindrical deadbolt with a thumbturn and indicator function for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn x occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both add indicator status above an existing latch. The Schlage L9486 puts the latchbolt, the deadbolt and the do not disturb indicator into one Grade 1 mortise case with a 10-072 1-1/4 inch x 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike, which is the route when the door is being reprepped or the mortise pocket is already there.
17) Can I get a lever that meets ADA and California code on a Schlage L9486?
Yes on both counts. The L Series meets ADA requirements, and for the California Referenced Standards Code any lever with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less complies, so pick the lever design accordingly from the nine offered here (01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 12, 17, 18). The product also carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings if you are specifying into a coastal jurisdiction.
