1) Will the Schlage LV9080 mortise lock fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The LV9080 Vandlgard storeroom mortise lock is built for 1-3/4 inch doors only, with a 2-3/4 inch backset. On an older 1-3/8 inch interior door you need a different lock or a thicker door prep. If your doors run thicker than 1-3/4 inches, the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inches.
2) What does Vandlgard actually do on the Schlage LV9080, and is it worth it over a standard L9080?
Vandlgard is a free-wheeling outside lever. When the LV9080 is locked, the outside lever spins freely instead of resisting force, so somebody hanging on it or kicking down on it does not transfer torque into the lock case. That is why it goes on school corridors, restrooms, stairwells and public-facing storerooms where levers get abused. The locking function is identical to a standard storeroom mortise lock: key retracts the latchbolt from outside, inside lever is always free.
3) Does the storeroom function on the LV9080 let people out without a key in a fire?
The inside lever is always free for immediate egress, no key, no thumbturn, no second motion. Outside is always locked and only the key retracts the latchbolt. That is the F07 storeroom function, and it is the one that satisfies free-egress requirements on a corridor or stair door while keeping the space secure from the public side.
4) Can I use the LV9080 on a 3-hour fire rated door?
Yes. The Schlage L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 ft x 10 ft and pairs up to 8 ft x 10 ft. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how the inspector confirms the listing in the field. The lock is ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000, Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, and meets ADA requirements.
5) What strike comes with the Schlage LV9080 and will it work in my existing frame prep?
It ships with the 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, with a 1-3/16 inch lip and a box. 6) Do I have to specify handing when ordering a Schlage LV9080?
Handing is field reversible on the lock body, so for most lever designs you do not specify it. The exception is the 12 lever, which is handed and needs RH or LH called out on the order. Everything else, the lock reverses on site.
7) Can I get the LV9080 keyed alike with the rest of my building, or order it less cylinder for my own core?
All three ways are available. Keyed different is standard. Keyed alike groups multiple locks to one key for a fleet of doors.
