SCHLAGE M400 SERIES OVERVIEW

M400 Series electromagnetic locks or “mag locks” are used as part of an electronic security solution usually combined with push bars, request-to-exit devices and credential readers. They are an easy-to-install alternative to electric strike or electric lock products with a bayonet mounting design that eliminates the need to hold the lock overhead while securing.

M400 Series models are designed specifically with the customer in mind to be robust and easy to configure. Sixteen models cover a full range of needs with 500, 1000, 1300 and 1500 lb. hold force options in single and double configurations, with and without delayed egress. The additional "Plus" models in all configurations add intelligent sensing and reporting features needed for integration with access control systems.

All Schlage electromagnetic locks come with a limited lifetime warranty on the magnetic coil assembly for added confidence in the longevity of these robust products.

1) Will a Schlage M420 maglock hold a door in a busy corridor, or do I need more holding force?
The M420 is rated at 500 lbs of holding force, which Schlage positions for traffic control openings rather than high or maximum security. If the door is a perimeter or secured-area opening, step up within the same M400 Series: the M450 gives 1000 lbs for high security and the M490 gives 1500 lbs for maximum security, both single door. Same mounting approach, same 628 satin aluminum housing, so the install does not change much.
2) What happens to a Schlage M420 maglock when the power goes out?
It unlocks. The M420 is fail-safe: the magnet only holds while energized, so a power loss or a fire alarm drop releases the door and it can be pushed open. That is how every mag lock behaves, and it is why the opening still needs a code-compliant release path (request-to-exit device, push bar, or panic hardware) rather than relying on the lock to stay secure. If you need the door to stay locked without power, a mag lock is the wrong device type entirely.
3) What power supply does the Schlage M420 need, 12 or 24 volt?
Either. The M420 uses automatic voltage selection and takes 12 or 24 VDC without setting a jumper or switch, so it drops onto whatever DC access control power supply is already at the opening. It is not battery operated, so a dedicated power supply and wiring run to the head of the door are part of the job.
4) What is the difference between the Schlage M420 and the M420P?
The P is the monitored version. Plain M420 is just the magnet with automatic voltage selection. M420P adds a magnetic bond sensor (MBS) so the access control system knows the magnet is actually bonded and not just energized, a door position switch (DPS), and an adjustable relocking time delay (RTD). If the lock ties into an access control head end that reports door status, order the P. If it is a standalone opening on a keypad or reader with no monitoring, the base model does the job. An ATS/LED option is also available on Plus models, combining an anti-tamper switch with reporting and a bond status LED at the lock.
5) Is the Schlage M420 maglock approved for a fire rated door?
Yes. The M420 is UL 10C listed for positive pressure fire tests of door assemblies at 3 hours, plus UL 1034 for burglary-resistant electronic locking mechanisms, UL 294 for access control systems, ANSI/BHMA A156.23 Grade 1, cUL and CSFM. That is the certification stack an institutional or MRO specifier needs on a rated corridor or stair door, and Grade 1 is the highest commercial grade under that standard.
6) I need a fire rated fail-safe magnet for a rated opening - how does the M420 compare to the alternatives?
The M420 is fail-safe and holds UL 10C with a 3 hour fire rating, UL 1034, UL 294, ANSI/BHMA A156.23, cUL and CSFM. Among the peers, the Dorma EML310 single door 1500 lb models, both the door position sensor version and the bond alert plus door position sensor version, and the Dorma EML320 double door 1500 lb are all fire rated and electrically locked (fail safe). All four release on power loss, so the difference between them comes down to leaf count, holding force and which monitoring outputs the head end needs.
7) Will a Schlage M420 work on a Herculite glass storefront door?
Yes, with the right kit. Optional mounting kits are offered for HERCULITE brand glass doors, along with top jamb mount and double door kits. The magnet itself is the same M420; the kit is what adapts it to the glass leaf, so the bracket is a separate line on the order. For a slim frame where a full size magnet will not sit, the Dortronics 1107 is a narrow 2 inch slim line 600 lb single door mag lock.
8) Does the Schlage M420 need to be handed, or does it work on either an inswing or outswing door?
No handing to specify. The M420 housing is symmetrical with field-selectable handing, so one part number covers left and right, and you set it at the opening. It is a surface mounted lock, which means the magnet goes on the frame at the head and the armature on the door. An armature mount pivot lets the plate move slightly to compensate for a door that does not sit perfectly flat, which is what usually costs you holding force on a real opening.
9) What else could I use instead of a Schlage M420 500 lb mag lock?
For a monitored single door, the Locknetics MG Series is offered in 600 lb and 1200 lb models, standard or monitored, on the same 12/24VDC. The Alarm Controls 1200 Series is a single door mag lock, with the 1200D as its double door counterpart. 10) Can a Schlage M420 be tied into an existing access control system?
Yes, and the M420P is the version built for it. Plus models connect to most access control systems and report through the magnetic bond sensor, door position switch, and relocking time delay, and the lock is UL 294 listed for access control systems. It is a component, not a standalone lock: it works alongside credential readers, request to exit devices and push bars, and it needs a 12 or 24 VDC supply.
11) Is a shear lock the same thing as an M420 magnetic lock?
No. The M420 is a surface mounted electromagnetic lock whose armature bonds to the face of the magnet, and it is fail-safe on 12/24VDC. The ROFU 8031-002 is a shear lock rated 2200 lb holding force, monitored, on 12/24VDC - a shear lock is concealed in the header and the door edge and the armature engages in shear rather than face to face, so the prep, the door and frame work, and the clearance requirements are different. The two are not interchangeable in an opening already prepped for one or the other.
12) Can I mix a Schlage M420 with the DynaLock or Alarm Controls magnets already on my other doors?
The M420 runs on 12/24VDC with automatic voltage selection, so it shares a supply voltage with the Locknetics MG and WMG Series at 12/24VDC, the Dortronics 1000 Series with field selectable 12/24VDC, the ROFU 8512 at 12/24VDC and the ROFU 8031-002 at 12/24VDC. What will not carry across is the magnet and armature themselves: the M420 uses a bayonet mount with a symmetrical field-selectable handed body and a pivoting armature mount, so its brackets, armature and mounting kits are specific to the M400 line and a DynaLock 2050 or Alarm Controls 1200 armature will not bond to it. Standardizing a building on one magnet means replacing both halves at the opening, not just the magnet.
13) Is the Schlage M420 a two-person overhead install?
One person can hang it. The bayonet mount lets you fix the mounting bracket to the frame first and then engage the magnet onto it, so nobody is holding a heavy magnet overhead while driving fasteners. Schlage positions the M400 Series as an easier install than an electric strike or electric lock, since there is no frame cutout or door prep, just a surface bracket at the head and a wire run.
14) Will the Schlage M420 finish match the rest of my aluminum storefront hardware?
The housing is aluminum in BHMA 628 satin finish, the standard clear anodized aluminum look that matches most storefront frames and aluminum door hardware.
