SCHLAGE M400 SERIES OVERVIEW

M400 Series electromagnetic locks or “mag locks” are used as part of an electronic security solution usually combined with push bars, request-to-exit devices and credential readers. They are an easy-to-install alternative to electric strike or electric lock products with a bayonet mounting design that eliminates the need to hold the lock overhead while securing.

M400 Series models are designed specifically with the customer in mind to be robust and easy to configure. Sixteen models cover a full range of needs with 500, 1000, 1300 and 1500 lb. hold force options in single and double configurations, with and without delayed egress. The additional "Plus" models in all configurations add intelligent sensing and reporting features needed for integration with access control systems.

All Schlage electromagnetic locks come with a limited lifetime warranty on the magnetic coil assembly for added confidence in the longevity of these robust products.

1) Will the Schlage M450 mag lock keep the door locked if the power goes out?
No. The M450 is a fail-safe device, so it releases the door whenever power is removed. That's how mag locks work and it's what makes them acceptable on egress doors, but it also means the opening is unlocked during a power failure or a fire alarm drop. If you need the door to stay secure with no power, a mag lock is the wrong choice and you want an electric strike or an electrified lock in a fail-secure configuration instead.
2) How much holding force does the Schlage M450 have, and is that enough for a high traffic entry?
1000 lb of rated hold force, which Schlage classes as the high security application in the M400 range. For simple traffic control on an interior or stairwell door, the 500 lb M420 covers it. For maximum security openings, the 1500 lb M490 is the step up. All three are single door magnets in the same series, so the mounting approach and wiring are the same.
3) What power supply do I need to run a Schlage M450 mag lock?
A regulated DC supply at either 12 or 24 VDC. The M450 has automatic voltage selection, so you don't set a jumper or order a voltage specific part, the lock detects what it's fed. It is not battery operated, so it needs a permanent DC source, and being fail-safe it draws power continuously to stay locked. Size the supply for continuous duty and add battery backup only if you intend the door to stay locked through an outage, which most egress codes will not allow anyway.
4) What is the difference between the Schlage M450 and the M450P?
The P is the monitored version. It adds a magnetic bond sensor that reports the magnet is actually bonded rather than just energized, a door position switch, and an adjustable relocking time delay. Those three outputs are what an access control head end needs to report door status and forced or held open alarms. The plain M450 is the same 1000 lb magnet with automatic voltage selection and no sensing outputs, which is fine on a standalone opening with a keypad or reader and a request to exit. If the door is being integrated into a monitored system, order the P.
5) Can I use the M450 mag lock on a pair of doors or on a glass storefront door?
The M450 ships as a single door lock, surface mounted. Schlage makes optional mounting kits for top jamb mount, double door conversion, and HERCULITE brand glass doors, so a single door M450 converts to a double door application with the optional bracket. If you know from the start that you are securing a pair, the M452 is the factory double door version at 1000 lb per leaf. For a glass front installer, the glass door kit is the piece to add to the order, it is not in the box.
6) What else do I need to order with a mag lock to make the door work?
A magnet on its own only holds the door. To build a working opening you need a DC power supply at 12 or 24 VDC, a way to release it (a push bar or push button, a request to exit device, or a credential reader tied to an access control panel), and a fire alarm interface so the lock drops on alarm.
