SCHLAGE M400 SERIES OVERVIEW

M400 Series electromagnetic locks or “mag locks” are used as part of an electronic security solution usually combined with push bars, request-to-exit devices and credential readers. They are an easy-to-install alternative to electric strike or electric lock products with a bayonet mounting design that eliminates the need to hold the lock overhead while securing.

M400 Series models are designed specifically with the customer in mind to be robust and easy to configure. Sixteen models cover a full range of needs with 500, 1000, 1300 and 1500 lb. hold force options in single and double configurations, with and without delayed egress. The additional "Plus" models in all configurations add intelligent sensing and reporting features needed for integration with access control systems.

All Schlage electromagnetic locks come with a limited lifetime warranty on the magnetic coil assembly for added confidence in the longevity of these robust products.

1) Will the Schlage M422 mag lock hold a pair of doors, or do I need two separate magnets?
The M422 is the double door version of the M400 Series, so one unit covers both leaves at 500 lb of hold force per leaf. It surface mounts across the head of the opening. If you only have a single leaf, the M420 is the 500 lb single door model, and a single door M400 unit can be converted to double with the optional bracket.
2) Does the M422 mag lock unlock when the fire alarm drops power?
Fail-safe, always. Cut power to the M422 and both leaves release. That is how every mag lock has to work for egress, and it means the opening needs a request-to-exit device, push bar or reader on the secure side to break power under normal use, plus a fire alarm tie-in. It is UL 10C listed for positive pressure fire tests at 3 hours.
3) What is the difference between the M422 and the M422P?
The P adds the monitoring. Order the plain Automatic Voltage Selection model and you get the magnet and nothing to report back. The P model adds a magnetic bond sensor so the panel knows the magnet is actually bonded and not just powered, a door position switch, and an adjustable relocking time delay. If the mag lock is tied to an access control system that logs door state, buy the P. If it is a standalone magnet on a keypad, the base model does the job.
4) Can I mount this mag lock on Herculite glass doors or a top jamb application?
Both are possible, but they take a kit. The M400 Series has optional mounting kits for top jamb mount, double door, and HERCULITE brand glass doors, so budget the bracket as a separate line when the opening is not a standard header mount. On the door side, the armature mount pivots to take up slight imperfections in the opening, which is what gets you a full bond on a door that does not close perfectly flat.
5) Will a Schlage M422 mag lock pass a Grade 1 spec on a government or healthcare job?
The M422 carries ANSI/BHMA A156.23 Grade 1, UL 1034 for burglary-resistant electronic locking mechanisms, UL 294 for access control systems, UL 10C, cUL and CSFM. That is the full stack most institutional specs call for on an electrified opening, including the California State Fire Marshal listing.
