SCHLAGE M400 SERIES OVERVIEW

M400 Series electromagnetic locks or “mag locks” are used as part of an electronic security solution usually combined with push bars, request-to-exit devices and credential readers. They are an easy-to-install alternative to electric strike or electric lock products with a bayonet mounting design that eliminates the need to hold the lock overhead while securing.

M400 Series models are designed specifically with the customer in mind to be robust and easy to configure. Sixteen models cover a full range of needs with 500, 1000, 1300 and 1500 lb. hold force options in single and double configurations, with and without delayed egress. The additional "Plus" models in all configurations add intelligent sensing and reporting features needed for integration with access control systems.

All Schlage electromagnetic locks come with a limited lifetime warranty on the magnetic coil assembly for added confidence in the longevity of these robust products.

Schlage Electronics M492 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage M492 mag lock hold a pair of doors, or do I need two single locks?
The M492 is built for a pair. It's a double-door electromagnetic lock rated at 1500 lb hold force per leaf, so each door gets its own magnet and armature off one assembly. You don't buy two M490 singles. If you already own single M400 mag locks, Schlage does sell an optional bracket that converts a single-door model to double, but the M492 arrives configured for the pair.
2) Is the Schlage M492 fail-safe or fail-secure, and what happens in a power failure?
Fail-safe, which is the only way a mag lock works. Cut power and both magnets release, so the doors are free. That means the M492 needs a power supply on the fire alarm and any code-required release path, and it will never hold a door during an outage. If you need a lock that stays secure with the power off, a mag lock is the wrong product family entirely.
3) What's the difference between the M492 and the M492P?
The P is the monitored version. It adds a magnetic bond sensor so your access control panel knows the magnet is actually bonded and not just powered, a door position switch, and an adjustable relocking time delay. The plain M492 is the magnet and nothing else. If the lock ties into a head-end that reports door status, or you want proof of bond rather than proof of voltage, order the P. Schlage also offers an ATS/LED option on Plus models that combines an anti-tamper switch with a visual bond indicator at the lock.
4) Which magnetic lock should I specify on a fire rated pair of doors?
The M492 is UL 10C listed for positive pressure fire tests of door assemblies at 3 hours, along with UL 1034 for burglary-resistant electronic locking mechanisms, UL 294 for access control, ANSI/BHMA A156.23 Grade 1, cUL and CSFM, and it is fail-safe so it releases on power drop. Among comparable double door units, the Dorma EML320 is fire rated and electrically locked (fail safe). Both are appropriate to put on a fire rated opening when tied into the fire alarm.
5) My AHJ is requiring delayed egress on this opening - can the M492 do that?
The M492 is a standard fail-safe magnet at 1500 lb per leaf; delayed egress is a separate model line. In the M400 series the delayed egress double door models are the M490DE-2 and M490DEP-2 at 1300 lb per leaf, factory configured with a 30-second delay and orderable in a BOCA compliant 15-second delay on the Plus model, with fire alarm terminals, an authorized release input, on-board audible alarm and ANSI/BHMA 156.24. From other makers, the Alarm Controls 1200DE Series is a delayed egress magnetic lock for a single door, and the DynaLock 2101 Series is a 1200 lb early warning lock.
6) What is the closest equivalent to the Schlage M492 double door mag lock from another manufacturer?
The Dorma EML320 is the nearest match. Both are double door electromagnetic locks rated 1500 lb, and the EML320 is an electrically locked (fail safe) unit, the same fail-safe operation the M492 uses, so both drop open when power is removed. The M492 runs on auto-selected 12/24 VDC and carries ANSI/BHMA A156.23 Grade 1 with UL 10C, UL 1034 and UL 294 listings. The Dorma EML320 is fire rated. Either one covers a pair of doors from a single housing per leaf.
7) I only have a single door opening - what should I use instead of the M492?
The M492 is built for double doors, with 1500 lb per leaf. For one leaf, the Dorma EML310 covers the same 1500 lb on a single door and comes two ways: the EML310 DP 628 with a door position sensor, and the EML310 BA DP 628 which adds a bond alert to that door position sensor. Both are electrically locked (fail safe) and fire rated. If you want to stay in the Schlage M400 family, the single door 1500 lb models are the M490 and M490P.
8) Is the ROFU 8031-002 shear lock a substitute for the M492?
No - despite the higher 2200 lb holding force and the same 12/24VDC supply, the ROFU 8031-002 is a shear lock, which mortises into the top of the door and frame and holds the leaf in shear. The M492 is a surface mounted electromagnetic lock that bonds an armature on the door face to a magnet on the frame, using bayonet mounting so the magnet does not have to be held overhead. The two need completely different door and frame prep, so one does not drop into the other's opening.
9) Do I have to specify handing when I order the Schlage M492?
No handing to call out. The housing is symmetrical and handing is selected in the field, so one part number covers either swing on either leaf. The armature mount also pivots slightly to take up an out-of-square opening and still make full bond contact.
10) Does the Schlage M492 mag lock need batteries or a standalone reader built in?
No batteries, and no credential reader on board. It's a hardwired commercial, heavy duty magnet that runs on 12/24 VDC and does nothing on its own. Plan on the rest of the package: a credential reader or keypad, a request-to-exit device or push bar, a power supply, and a fire alarm interface. The magnet is the locking element in that system, not the system.
11) What finish does the Schlage M492 come in, and will it match my other door hardware?
One finish only: aluminum housing in BHMA 628 satin, which is clear anodized aluminum and the standard mag lock finish. There's no dark bronze or black option in the M400 line, so on a bronze storefront the lock will read as a light satin band across the head.
