PM040 - Bath/Bedroom Privacy Lock

1) Will the Schlage PM040 privacy mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch commercial door?
Yes. 1-3/4 inches (44 mm) is the standard door thickness for the PM040 mortise lock. It will go down to 1-3/8 inches (35 mm) minimum, and it can be built for doors up to 2-1/2 inches thick, but over 1-3/4 inches you have to specify the door thickness and the lock position in the door, and that option is available in EE only.
2) How does the PM040 bath/bedroom lock unlock in an emergency if someone is locked in?
Privacy is set by rotating the inside thumbturn, which makes the outside lever inoperative. From the outside you pop off the access hole cover, insert the emergency thumbturn (it is furnished with the lock) and rotate it. Inside, turning the thumbturn or simply turning the inside lever releases it, and closing the door also unlocks it so nobody gets locked out. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress.
3) What mortise pocket size does the PM040 need, and can I drop it into an existing Schlage L Series prep?
The PM040 case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch (113 x 154 x 25 mm). Spacing is 3-7/8 inches (98 mm) lever to cylinder and 2-11/16 inches (68 mm) lever to thumbturn hub. Be careful on retrofit: PM Series and L Series case and cover holes differ, so the mounting holes will not line up with an L Series case without rework.
4) What is a cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage PM040 privacy mortise lock?
The Schlage PM040 is a Grade 1 non-keyed privacy mortise lock for bath and bedroom doors with a 2-3/4 inch backset. 6) The opening needs to be keyed - what mortise lock should I order instead of the PM040?
The PM040 is non-keyed, so it takes no cylinder. A deadbolt alone does not give the door a latch or a lever.
