Schlage PM464P 613 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Schlage PM464 mortise deadbolt have a lever or interior thumbturn?
No lever, no interior trim. The PM464 is a key cylinder only mortise deadbolt: the bolt is thrown and retracted by key, with nothing on the inside face. If you need a thumbturn on the room side for egress, this is the wrong function in the PM Series. Where an inside turn is required, Schlage's thumbturn style in this series is ADA qualified, but it does not come on the 464.
2) What door thickness does the Schlage PM Series mortise lock fit?
1-3/4 inch is the standard, 1-3/8 inch is the minimum, and the case will go into doors up to 2-1/2 inches thick. Above 1-3/4 inches you have to specify both the door thickness and the position of the lock in the door, and that is available in EE only.
3) Will the PM464 fit my existing mortise pocket and strike prep?
The case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches (113 x 154 x 25 mm) on a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the only backset offered. The deadbolt throws 1 inch and it ships with an ANSI curved lip strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip and a dust box. One thing to watch on a swap: PM Series and L Series case and cover holes differ, so an L Series pocket is not a straight drop-in.
4) What are the cylinder options on the Schlage PM464, and can I get it less cylinder for my own keying?
Five cylinder choices. B is less SFIC, J is less FSIC, and L is less conventional 6-pin cylinder, all three for locksmiths supplying their own core or keying to an existing system. P ships with a conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed 5. T ships with an FSIC construction core so the trades can use the opening during the job and the permanent core goes in at turnover.
5) What is a comparable mortise deadbolt if the Schlage PM464 does not fit the door?
The Schlage PM464 is a keyed cylinder-only mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Sargent 4874 is a mortise deadbolt that also uses a 2-3/4 inch backset, but it is a double cylinder function, meaning it is keyed on both sides rather than keyed with no interior trim. The Kaba Ilco 185 Series is another mortise lock listed with a deadbolt function and is supplied with no handing.
6) Is there a Grade 1 mortise deadbolt with a keypad instead of a key like the Schlage PM464?
The PM464 is a mechanical keyed deadbolt with no electronic operation. The Alarm Lock DL4500 Series is a Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt with 2,000 user codes and a privacy keypad, fitting doors 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch thick, compared with the PM464's 1-3/4 inch door thickness.
7) Do I have to order the Schlage PM464 handed?
No. Handing is field reversible on the PM Series, so one part number covers left and right hand openings and you can set it at install rather than at the order desk.
8) Is the Schlage PM464 rated for a commercial opening?
Grade 1 and carries the ANSI/BHMA F18 function designation, and it is built for commercial use, specifically the commercial real estate, retail, multifamily and hospitality markets Schlage targets with the Performance Series. It is a mechanical lock with no electronics.
9) I need a classroom mortise lockset, not a deadbolt only. What should I look at instead?
The PM464 is a deadbolt with a key cylinder and nothing else, so it will not latch a door. For a keyed classroom function mortise lockset with a latch, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lock for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, also 1-3/4 inch. If you want electronic classroom control instead, the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with RFID.
10) What is a comparable mortise deadbolt from another brand if the PM464 is not right?
For a keyed mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset, the Sargent 4874 from the 4870 Series is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt, which is the choice when you want key operation from both sides instead of the PM464's single outside cylinder with no inside trim. The Kaba Ilco 185 Series is another mortise deadbolt option and is supplied with no handing. If you want keypad control of the bolt, the Alarm Lock DL4500 is a Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt for doors 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inches thick.
11) What looks like a substitute for the Schlage PM464 but will not work as a deadbolt?
A Sargent 130KB or 130W mortise thumbturn is trim only, not a lock body, so it cannot replace the PM464 deadbolt case. Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are dummy function and do not lock at all. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock, which latches but is not keyed.
12) For a classroom door, how does the Schlage PM464 compare to a classroom mortise lockset?
The PM464 carries a classroom function designation but is a cylinder-only deadbolt operated by key from the outside with no interior trim, so it secures the door without providing lever operation. A Cal-Royal NM8070 or a TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors that handles the latching and lever operation, with the FME-2000 adding RFID credential operation.
13) We standardize on small format interchangeable core - does the Schlage PM464 work, or do we need a different lock?
The PM464 is offered less SFIC, less FSIC, less conventional 6-pin cylinder, with a conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed 5, or with an FSIC construction core, so it can be prepped for an interchangeable core program directly. Among other mortise locksets, the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset offered with an interchangeable core option if a latching lever set is needed on the same key system.
14) Is the Schlage PM464 field reversible, and what other mortise locks are?
The PM464 mortise case is field reversible for handing. The BEST 45H Series heavy duty mortise lock body in public entrance function is also described as field reversible, and the Falcon MA101 Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock has field reversible operation. By contrast, the Baldwin 6310190RRLS is supplied specifically as right hand reverse.
15) What mortise option gives us a deadbolt plus lever function in one lock instead of the Schlage PM464?
The PM464 provides the deadbolt alone. The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt, and the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors - both combine a latch and deadbolt in a single case.
16) Does a Baldwin mortise lock body cross over to the Schlage PM464?
No. The PM464 uses a 2-3/4 inch backset, while Baldwin mortise lock bodies such as the 6301 entry/apartment and 6310 entry/storeroom are 2-1/2 inch backset, so the door prep and cylinder location differ. The Baldwin 6310 is listed for doors 1-3/8 inch and over.
17) Our doors are thicker than 1-3/4 inch - what mortise locks cover that range?
The Schlage PM464 is catalogued for 1-3/4 inch doors, with the case accepting 1-3/8 inch minimum and doors up to 2-1/2 inch when the thickness and position in door are specified. Hager 3800 Series mortise locks such as the 3810E passage with escutcheon and the 3850E office function list a 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch door thickness range with a 2-3/4 inch backset, matching the PM464 backset.
