Schlage PM463P 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage PM463 mortise deadbolt actually operate from each side of the door?
The PM463 is a deadbolt only, no levers on either side. Outside is a key cylinder that both throws and retracts the bolt. Inside is a cylinder thumbturn that will only retract the bolt, it cannot project it. So the door can be locked only from the key side, which is why this function suits a stairwell, storage or tenant space where you don't want occupants deadbolting the opening from inside.
2) Will the Schlage PM463 work on a 1-3/8 inch door, and what about doors thicker than 1-3/4?
1-3/4 inches is the standard door thickness for the PM463, with 1-3/8 inches the minimum it will work on. It can go up to 2-1/2 inches thick, but over 1-3/4 you have to specify the door thickness and the lock's position in the door, and that is available in the EE configuration only.
3) What backset and pocket size do I need to prep the door for a Schlage PM463 mortise deadbolt?
Backset is 2-3/4 inches and that is the only backset offered. The steel case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch (113 x 154 x 25 mm). One thing to watch if you are reusing an existing mortise pocket: PM Series case and cover holes differ from Schlage L Series, so an L Series prep is not a straight drop-in. Use the PM Series template.
4) What does the cylinder option letter mean when ordering a Schlage PM463, and do I get a cylinder with it?
The option letter decides the cylinder. B is less SFIC, J is less FSIC and L is less a conventional 6-pin cylinder, meaning the lock arrives with no cylinder and you supply and key it yourself. P includes a conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed 5 pin. T comes with an FSIC construction core for use during the build, to be swapped for the permanent core at turnover. Remember the PM463 takes two cylinders, the outside key cylinder and the inside cylinder thumbturn, so plan your cylinder count accordingly.
5) I need a mortise lock with a latch and lever, not just a deadbolt - what should I order instead of the PM463?
The Schlage PM463 is a deadbolt-only mortise lock with no lever on either side, so it does not latch the door. If the opening needs a latching lever lockset, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors. For a storeroom function, the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 mortise lock with the Arcadia lever.
6) We want keypad access instead of a key - what mortise deadbolt replaces the PM463?
The Schlage PM463 is a mechanical, keyed mortise deadbolt with no electronic components. For keypad operation on a comparable opening, the Alarm Lock DL4500 is a Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt with 2,000 user codes and a privacy keypad, fitting doors 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch thick. Note that the PM463 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors standard and accepts doors up to 2-1/2 inch when thickness is specified.
7) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage PM463 mortise deadbolt from another brand?
The Schlage PM463 is a mortise deadbolt operated by a key cylinder outside with an inside cylinder thumbturn, on a 2-3/4 inch backset. The nearest equivalent in another line is the Sargent 4874, a mortise deadbolt in the 4870 Series that also uses a 2-3/4 inch backset, configured as a double cylinder function rather than cylinder by thumbturn. The Kaba Ilco 185 Series is also a mortise deadbolt function and is supplied with no handing.
8) Can I use a Baldwin 6310 mortise lock in place of the Schlage PM463?
They are not interchangeable in the same door prep. The Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock body uses a 2-1/2 inch backset and is listed for doors 1-3/8 inch and over, while the Schlage PM463 is built on a 2-3/4 inch backset only. A mortise pocket cut for one backset will not accept the other without re-prepping the door edge.
9) Do I have to order a handed Schlage PM463, left or right?
No. Handing is field reversible on the PM463, so one part number covers both left and right hand openings and you can set it on site. That is useful for a property manager keeping a small spares shelf instead of stocking two versions.
10) Can I match a Schlage PM463 deadbolt to the other locks in the building?
Yes. PM Series mortise locks are made to suite with other Allegion products, and they share lever and rose styles with the Schlage PT Series tubular locks, so a building running PT tubular sets on interior doors can carry the same look through to mortise openings. The PM Series overall covers 26 functions including three electrified plus four mortise deadbolt functions, so you can standardise one series across a complex.
11) Is the Schlage PM463 heavy duty enough for a commercial building, and what is its ANSI function?
It is a Grade 1 commercial lock, ANSI/BHMA function F29, with a cold rolled steel case given corrosion resistant zinc dichromate plating and a stainless steel bolt. Grade 1 is the top ANSI/BHMA durability tier, which is what most institutional and multifamily specs call for on entry and egress hardware.
12) Does the inside thumbturn on the Schlage PM463 meet ADA requirements?
The thumbturn style used on the PM Series is ADA qualified, so the inside side can be operated without tight grasping or wrist twisting. Note the PM463 thumbturn is a cylinder thumbturn: it retracts the bolt for egress but cannot throw it.
13) What is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt alternative to the Schlage PM463?
If you want key operation on both sides rather than a thumbturn inside, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt with the same 2-3/4 inch backset as the PM463, from the 4870 Series. Bear in mind a key-both-sides deadbolt on an occupied space is a code problem in many jurisdictions, which is exactly why the PM463 pairs an outside cylinder with a free-egress inside thumbturn.
14) Is the Sargent 130KB thumbturn a substitute for the PM463?
No. The Sargent 130KB is a standard duty mortise thumbturn in the 8200 Series, and the Sargent 130W is a mortise thumbturn with a round backplate in the 7800 Series - both are trim pieces that mount to an existing mortise lock body. The Schlage PM463 is a complete mortise deadbolt lock with the case, a 1 inch throw stainless steel deadbolt, and an ANSI curved lip strike with dust box.
15) Which mortise locks match the PM463 on Grade 1 for a classroom opening?
The Schlage PM463 carries a Grade 1 rating with an ANSI/BHMA F29 function designation. Other Grade 1 classroom mortise options include the Cal-Royal NM8070 and the Corbin Russwin ML2003, both listed for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the TownSteel FME-2000 Series, a heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with RFID credential reading. The PM463 differs from all three in that it is a deadbolt function rather than a latching lockset.
16) What is the difference between the Schlage PM463 and the Schlage CO-100 mortise lock?
The PM463 is a mechanical keyed mortise deadbolt, Grade 1, with a key cylinder outside and a thumbturn inside that retracts but cannot project the bolt. The Schlage CO-100 standalone electronic mortise lock is a Grade 1 heavy duty unit with privacy function and a keypad reader for 1-3/4 inch doors. Choose the PM463 when the opening is controlled by a key system and the CO-100 when credentials are managed at the door.
17) I need a privacy mortise lock with a deadbolt for a restroom - is the PM463 the right choice?
The PM463 is keyed on the outside, which is not typically what a restroom or bedroom opening calls for. For privacy with a deadbolt, the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 to 2 inch, which matches the PM463 backset.
18) Which mortise lock should I use if the door needs a dormitory function with both a latch and a deadbolt?
The Schlage PM463 provides the deadbolt alone with no latch or lever. If one lock body needs to carry both, the Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt in the 7900 Series.
19) What finishes does the Schlage PM463 mortise deadbolt come in?
Six finishes: 613 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 619 Satin Nickel, 622 Matte Black, 625 Bright Chrome, 626 Satin Chrome and 643E Aged Bronze. All six are offered with every cylinder option, so you can match the deadbolt to the levers already on the building whichever way you buy the cylinder.
20) Is a Marks USA 21AC ornamental iron mortise lock an alternative to the Schlage PM463?
Not for the same door. The Marks USA 21AC entrance double cylinder Unilock ornamental iron mortise lock is listed for 1 inch thick doors, which suits narrow ornamental iron gates and stiles. The Schlage PM463 is a commercial mortise deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors standard, with a 1-3/8 inch minimum.
