1) Can I use a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on an exit or egress door?
No. Schlage warns directly against it: double cylinder locks on any door in a structure used for egress are a life safety hazard in an emergency, and their use is not recommended. The PM462 needs a key on both sides to throw or retract the bolt, so nobody gets out without a key. Install it only where existing codes allow it, typically on a non-egress opening like a stockroom, mechanical space, or a storefront back door with an approved egress path elsewhere.
2) What door thickness does the Schlage PM462 mortise deadbolt fit?
1-3/4 inches (44 mm) is the standard, with 1-3/8 inches (35 mm) the minimum it will work in. The case will also go into doors up to 2-1/2 inches thick, but over 1-3/4 inches you have to specify the actual door thickness and the position in the door when ordering, and that is available in the EE option only.
3) Will the PM462 deadbolt line up with the mortise pocket and strike already in my door?
It is a 2-3/4 inch backset only, with a case measuring 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch (113 x 154 x 25 mm). The deadbolt throws 1 inch (25 mm) of stainless steel. It ships with the 10-072 ANSI curved lip strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip, plus a dust box. If your existing jamb cutout needs a different lip, optional lip lengths are 7/8, 1, 1-1/2, 1-3/4 and 2 inches. Worth noting for anyone swapping out an older Schlage: PM Series case and cover holes differ from L Series, so it is not a straight case-hole match.
4) Does the PM462 come with cylinders, or do I key it myself?
That depends on the option you pick, and it is the main ordering decision. Five cylinder prep choices: B less small format interchangeable core, J less full size interchangeable core, L less conventional 6-pin cylinder, P with a conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed 5 pins, and T with an FSIC construction core. B, J and L ship without cylinders so a locksmith or the facility can drop in its own cores from an existing key system. P arrives keyed and ready. T lets the contractor hold the job on construction cores and swap permanent cores at turnover. Remember the PM462 takes a cylinder on both sides, so plan for two.
5) Is the PM462 a full lockset, or do I still need a latch and lever on the door?
Deadbolt only, no levers. The PM462 case gives you the bolt and a key cylinder on each face, nothing more. If the opening also needs a latch for day-to-day operation, you either add a separate latchset above it or step up to a PM Series lockset that combines both. The series covers 26 functions including three electrified, so there is usually a single-case answer.
6) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage PM462 double cylinder mortise deadbolt from another manufacturer?
