Schlage PM460P 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Schlage PM460 mortise lock have levers, or is it deadbolt only?
Deadbolt only. The PM460 is a cylinder x thumbturn mortise deadbolt: key cylinder outside with no lever, thumbturn inside with no lever. The bolt is thrown and retracted by the outside key or the inside thumbturn. If you need a latch and levers for day-to-day passage, you want a different PM Series function, not the 460.
2) Will the PM460 drop into my existing mortise pocket and strike prep?
The backset is 2-3/4 inches only, and the case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch. The deadbolt throws 1 inch of stainless steel into an ANSI curved lip strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, with a dust box included and a 1-3/16 inch standard lip. Optional lip lengths run 7/8, 1, 1-1/2, 1-3/4 and 2 inches if your jamb needs the bolt carried further. One thing to check before you cut: PM Series case and cover holes differ from Schlage L Series, so an L Series pocket is not a straight swap.
3) Does the PM460 come with a cylinder, or do I order that separately?
That depends on the option code you pick. P ships with a conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed 5. T ships with an FSIC construction core. B comes less SFIC, J comes less FSIC, and L comes less the conventional 6-pin cylinder, so with any of those three you are supplying the core or cylinder yourself. Locksmiths keying a building to an existing system usually take B, J or L; a single-door replacement is easiest with P.
4) What is a comparable mortise deadbolt if I need key outside and thumbturn inside but not the Schlage PM460?
The Schlage PM460 is a mortise deadbolt operated by key outside and thumbturn inside, with a 2-3/4 inch backset and field reversible handing. For the same mortise deadbolt role from another maker, the Kaba Ilco 185 Series mortise lock is a deadbolt function offered with no handing. If the opening instead calls for a key on both sides, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset, which matches the PM460 backset but replaces the inside thumbturn with a second cylinder.
5) I need a latching mortise lock with levers, not a deadbolt only - what should I order instead of the PM460?
The Schlage PM460 has no lever on either side; it is a keyed cylinder outside and thumbturn inside operating a deadbolt only. If the door needs a latching lever lock, the Cal-Royal NM8050 is a Grade 1 entrance/office mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, which matches the PM460's Grade 1 rating and entrance/office function while adding lever trim. For storeroom operation with levers, the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with an Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option.
6) Do I have to order the Schlage PM460 handed?
No. Handing is field reversible on the PM Series, so one part number covers left and right hand openings and you set it at install.
7) Is the PM460 thumbturn ADA compliant for a commercial opening?
The thumbturn style used on the PM Series is ADA qualified, so no tight pinching or twisting is needed to retract the bolt from the inside. The lock itself is a Grade 1 commercial mortise product, mechanical rather than electronic.
8) Is a Sargent 130KB thumbturn a substitute for the Schlage PM460?
No. The Sargent 130KB is a standard mortise thumbturn, a trim piece from the 8200 Series, as is the Sargent 130W thumbturn with a round backplate from the 7800 Series. The Schlage PM460 is a complete mortise lock case with the deadbolt mechanism, a keyed cylinder prep on the outside and a thumbturn on the inside, sized 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch with a 1 inch throw stainless steel deadbolt. The Sargent parts would go into an existing Sargent lock body, not replace a mortise case.
9) What mortise option gives me keypad access instead of a key on the Schlage PM460 deadbolt?
The Schlage PM460 is mechanical, not electronic, and is operated by a key outside or the inside thumbturn. For keypad operation of a mortise deadbolt, the Alarm Lock DL4500 Series is a Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt with 2,000 user codes and a privacy keypad for doors 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch thick. For a keypad mortise lock with a mechanical key override, the BEST 45HZ EZ Series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override.
10) The PM460 is listed for 1-3/4 inch doors - what mortise lock covers thicker doors?
The Schlage PM460 is built around a 1-3/4 inch door as standard, with 1-3/8 inch minimum and a fit up to 2-1/2 inch when door thickness and position are specified. If you prefer a lock catalogued outright for a thickness range, the Hager 3810E and 3810S from the 3800 Series list 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch on a 2-3/4 inch backset, matching the PM460 backset, though both are passage function rather than keyed. The Baldwin 6310 mortise lock body lists 1-3/8 inch and over on a 2-1/2 inch backset, which is a different backset from the PM460.
11) Which mortise lock should I use on a privacy or restroom door instead of the PM460?
The Schlage PM460 is keyed from the outside, which is not what a restroom or bedroom door usually wants. The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with a deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S from the 3800 Series is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset, the same backset the PM460 uses, for doors 1-3/4 to 2 inch thick.
12) I want the deadbolt and a latch in one mortise case - what does that instead of the PM460?
The Schlage PM460 case carries the deadbolt only, thrown by key outside or thumbturn inside. For a single mortise case that combines a deadbolt with latching lever trim, the Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty corridor/dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. The Cal-Royal NM8440 also pairs a deadbolt with its lockset, though in privacy function rather than a keyed one.
13) Do the Emtek mortise entrance locksets work as a replacement for the Schlage PM460?
They do not lock. The Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are all dummy function, meaning no operating mechanism. The Schlage PM460 is a keyed Grade 1 mortise deadbolt with a 1 inch throw stainless steel bolt and an ANSI curved lip strike with dust box, so it secures the opening while the Emtek dummy trims are appearance only on an inactive leaf.
14) Which mortise locks besides the Schlage PM460 are field reversible so I do not have to specify handing?
The Schlage PM460 is field reversible, so one part number covers both hands. Among other mortise bodies, the BEST 45H Series heavy duty mortise lock body in public entrance function is field reversible, and the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation. By contrast, the Baldwin 6310190RRLS is specified right hand reverse, so handing has to be called out at order time.
15) If I am standardizing a building on small format interchangeable cores, how does the PM460 compare to other mortise options?
The Schlage PM460 is offered less SFIC, less FSIC, less conventional 6-pin cylinder, with a conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed 5, or with an FSIC construction core, so the cylinder decision is made at order time. Among the alternatives, the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset offered with an interchangeable core option, and the BEST 45H Series heavy duty mortise lock body is another route for facilities standardized on cores.
16) Is the Schlage CO-100 mortise lock an alternative to the PM460 for a keyed opening?
They solve different problems. The Schlage CO-100 mortise lock is a Grade 1 heavy duty standalone electronic mortise lock in privacy function with a keypad reader for 1-3/4 inch doors, so it manages codes rather than keys and it is not a keyed deadbolt. The Schlage PM460 is a mechanical Grade 1 keyed mortise deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors with a thumbturn inside that is ADA qualified. Both suit 1-3/4 inch doors, but only the PM460 keys into a mechanical key system.
17) What finishes does the Schlage PM460 mortise deadbolt come in?
Six: 613 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 619 Satin Nickel, 622 Matte Black, 625 Bright Chrome, 626 Satin Chrome and 643E Aged Bronze. All six are offered with every cylinder option, so you can match the deadbolt to the trim on the rest of the opening without giving up your keying choice.
