SDC 1571V – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the SDC 1571 maglock hold a double door, or do I need a different model?
For a pair of doors you want the 1572, the double EMLock version of the 1570 Series; the 1571 is the single-door unit. Both are surface mounted at the head of the opening and both are rated at 1,200 lbs holding force. The series covers swing doors, single or double, so a pair gets one 1572 assembly rather than two separate single locks.
2) Does the SDC 1570 Series maglock release the door when the power goes out?
Yes, it's fail-safe. Drop power to the 1570 Series EMLock and the magnet releases, so the door is free to open. That is the behavior code requires on an egress opening, and it is also the thing to understand before you use one on a door you need to stay locked in a power failure, a maglock cannot do that. If you need the door to remain secured without power, you need a fail-secure electric strike or electrified lock instead, not this.
3) What options do I need to specify when ordering an SDC 1571 or 1572 EMLock?
Five option choices plus finish. Door position switch (DPS) reports whether the door is open or closed. Bond alert status (BAS) reports whether the magnet is actually holding, which is not the same thing and is what an integrator usually wants back at the panel. Anti-tamper switch (ATS) signals if someone works on the housing. Relock time delay (RTD) holds the lock off briefly after a release so the door has time to clear. And a visual status LED on the lock itself. Each is a yes or no on the order, and the six finishes are 335 dull black, 605 bright brass, 625 bright chrome, 626 dull chrome, 628 dull aluminum and 710 dark bronze.
4) Does the SDC 1570 maglock need any door prep or mortising?
No mortising. It is a surface mount lock, the magnet body goes on the frame at the head and the armature on the door, so there is no cutting into the door or frame the way a mortise lock or an electric strike prep requires. That is why maglocks are the usual answer on a retrofit where you do not want to touch the existing door. Fasteners come with it, self drilling sheet metal screws plus 10/32 machine screws, so you have an option for hollow metal and for solid substrate.
5) Difference between bond alert and a door position switch on a maglock?
They answer two different questions and on the 1570 Series they are separate options you order independently. The door position switch tells the head end whether the door leaf is closed. Bond alert tells you whether the magnet has actually achieved its hold against the armature, which is what catches a door that looks shut but is bound up on a warped frame or a misaligned armature and is only holding a fraction of its 1,200 lbs. If you are monitoring a perimeter exit door and only picking one, most integrators take bond alert; on a card-access opening feeding a door-held-open alarm, you want both.
6) What finishes does the SDC 1570 Series EMLock come in for matching the rest of my hardware?
Six: 335 dull black, 605 bright brass, 625 bright chrome, 626 dull chrome, 710 dark bronze and 628 dull aluminum. The housing is aluminum, plated or anodized on all sides, so the finish carries around the visible faces rather than just the front. For a property manager standardizing a building, 626 dull chrome is the one that lines up with the satin chrome trim on most commercial openings and 628 with clear anodized aluminum storefront.
7) What does the relock time delay do on an SDC EMLock and do I need it?
RTD keeps the magnet off for a short period after the release signal ends, instead of re-energizing the instant the button or card read finishes. Without it, a slow-moving person can have the lock energize again while the door is still swinging, and the armature slams back against a live magnet. Order RTD yes on openings with a door closer and heavy traffic, or where the release is a momentary push button. On an opening released by a continuous signal from the panel it matters less.
