1) What's the difference between a momentary and an alternate action PB3 push button?
Momentary models (PB3, PB3E, PB3N, PB3EN, PB3ER) make the circuit only while the button is held, which is what you want for a normal request-to-exit release: press, door unlocks, release, door relocks. Alternate action models (PB3A, PB3AN, PB3EA, PB3EAN, PB3EAR) latch, so one press holds the state and the next press reverses it. Use alternate action when you want the button to hold a door unlocked, for example a lobby door left free during business hours. Pick the wrong one and a maglock either drops out early or stays unlocked all day.
2) Can I mount a PB3 push button without cutting a hole in the wall?
Yes. The PB3ER (remote momentary) and PB3EAR (remote alternate) come on a black plastic surface mount housing measuring 3-7/8 x 2 inches (98mm x 51mm), so they screw to the wall surface with no back box or drywall cut. The stainless plate versions need a single gang or narrow stile opening behind them. Surface mount is the usual answer on block walls, glass mullions, and finished spaces where you cannot open the wall.
3) Will a Securitron PB3 switch handle the current draw of my maglock or electric strike circuit?
The PB3 contacts are rated 3 amps. That covers switching the control side of most 12 or 24 VDC maglocks and strikes directly. The button's own illumination draws 29 mA at 12 VDC and 40 mA at 24 VDC, so it adds almost nothing to your power supply budget. 4) Do I need to order a specific PB3 model for DPDT, or can I change it in the field?
No separate part number. Every PB3 push button is field convertible from DPST to DPDT, so one button covers both a simple two-pole break and a setup where you need a second set of transfer contacts for a shunt, an alarm input, or an auxiliary signal. You make the change at install, not on the order form. What you do have to specify up front is momentary versus alternate action, plate size, and illuminated versus non-illuminated.
5) I need a handicap or ADA style push plate, not a small button. Is the PB3 the right part?
No. The PB3 buttons are 3/4 inch rectangular buttons on a stainless plate or surface housing, sized for a request to exit at a normal wall box, not for a palm strike or wheelchair actuator. For a large actuator you press with a hand or forearm, look at the RCI 950 Series round push plate with the handicap symbol in satin stainless, a momentary switch, or the DynaLock 6200 Series palm switch, which is alternate action SPDT. Note the DynaLock is single pole, so if you need two poles the PB3 is still the one.
6) What should I use instead of a Securitron PB3 narrow button on an aluminum storefront stile?
