Securitron UNL Series UnLatch Strike

The Securitron UnLatch eliminates the necessity to perform a routing operation on the door frame for installation. The motor driven Securitron UnLatch also presents a fully concealed appearance on the door which not only enhances the architectural appeal of the installation but improves security over a conventional electric strike as an intruder is less able to determine the type of security device present on the door. The Securitron UnLatch functions with cylindrical dead latches or springlatches and includes a latch status output which reports when the door is in latched (secure) condition or is open.

Securitron SEC-UNL-24 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I have to cut the door frame to install a Securitron UnLatch strike?
No routing or cutting of the jamb is needed. The Securitron UNL UnLatch drops into a standard ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike cutout, so on an existing commercial frame already prepped for a standard strike you are working with the prep that is there. It installs fully concealed, so nothing on the face of the frame tells an intruder an electrified device is on the opening.
2) Will the UnLatch work with my cylindrical lockset?
That is exactly what it is built for. The UNL UnLatch works with cylindrical deadlatches and springlatches and accommodates a latchbolt up to 5/8 inch. It is not a mortise or exit device strike, so if the opening has a mortise lock or a rim exit device you need a different strike.
3) Is the Securitron UnLatch fail-safe or fail-secure?
Fail-secure. When power drops, the door stays locked and the latch is still held. Egress from the inside is still by the lockset lever, as with any fail-secure strike. If your life-safety plan calls for the door to unlock on power loss, this is the wrong device for that opening.
4) Can the UnLatch go on a fire rated door?
Yes, on a single fire door it carries a 3 hour rating, and that rating applies to the fail-secure configuration only. It is also UL Listed and windstorm rated, which matters on hurricane-zone openings in schools and healthcare facilities.
5) Will this strike release on a door that is under pressure from a closer or stack pressure?
It releases under preload, so a door being pushed against the strike by a closer, weatherstripping or building stack pressure will still release when signalled. That is a common failure point with ordinary solenoid strikes in stairwells and exterior openings. The UnLatch is motor driven rather than solenoid driven, and it is rated continuous duty so it can be held released without a duty cycle limit.
6) What voltage and finish do I need to specify when ordering the UNL UnLatch?
Two choices. Voltage is 12V or 24V, and finish is 626 satin chrome or 613 oil rubbed bronze. Both finishes are offered at both voltages, so match the voltage to your access control power supply and the finish to the rest of the trim on the opening.
7) Does the UnLatch tell my access control panel whether the door is actually latched?
A latch status sensor is standard, wired as a single pole double throw contact. It reports latched (secure) versus open, so your panel can distinguish a truly secured door from one that looks closed but never caught the latch. No separate monitoring option to order.
8) Does using an electric strike defeat the deadlatch on my lockset?
The UNL UnLatch maintains deadlatch function at all times, so the anti-shim protection of your cylindrical deadlatch stays intact while the strike is installed. That is a real concern on exterior and tenant-entry doors where a strike that parks the deadlatch pin in an open keeper leaves the latch loidable.
9) Electric strike or electrified lockset for retrofitting an existing cylindrical lock door?
If the existing cylindrical lockset is fine and you only need electronic release, the UNL UnLatch is the lower-disruption path: it uses the standard ANSI 4-7/8 inch frame prep already in the jamb and leaves the door itself untouched, with no door wiring or power transfer hinge. An electrified lockset instead means prepping the door and running power through the hinge edge. Choose the strike when the frame is accessible and the door is not.
10) Is the Securitron UnLatch heavy duty enough for a high traffic commercial entrance?
It is a Grade 1 commercial device, the heaviest ANSI/BHMA duty class, and it is rated continuous duty. That suits it to main entrances, tenant suite doors and institutional corridors rather than light residential use.
