HES UNL-24 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the HES UNL electric strike fit an existing ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike cutout without cutting the jamb?
That's the whole point of the UnLatch. The UNL drops into a standard ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike prep with no cutting or altering of the jamb, and the install is fully concealed once the faceplate is on. Faceplate is 4-7/8 inches and the strike body depth is 1-1/2 inches, so confirm you have that much room behind the prep in the frame.
2) Does the HES UNL work with a cylindrical lockset, or do I need a mortise strike?
The UNL is built for cylindrical and tubular locksets with a latchbolt, and it takes a latchbolt up to 5/8 inch. If your opening has a mortise lock, use the Securitron MUNL Mortise UnLatch instead. The UNL will not accept mortise lock hardware.
3) Can I use the HES UNL on a fire rated door?
Yes. The UnLatch strike is UL 10C Listed for 3 hour single door, CAN/ULC Listed to CAN4-S104, and compliant with NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 for fire doors. It carries ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1 with function codes E09321, E09322 and E09323. Note that on a fire door the strike must be fail secure, so if you order the FSUNL module set it accordingly.
4) Is the HES UNL fail safe or fail secure?
As shipped the UNL is fail secure. Adding the Securitron FSUNL Fail Safe UnLatch module makes it field selectable for either fail safe or fail secure, and on loss of power it runs a full unlatch or latch cycle depending on the mode you set. The FSUNL is a separate item, so add it to the order if you need fail safe on that opening.
5) What do I need to specify when ordering the HES UNL UnLatch strike?
Two choices: voltage and finish. Voltage is 12VDC or 24VDC, and finish is 626 satin chrome or 613 oil rubbed bronze, both offered on either voltage. Part numbers run UNL-12, UNL-24, and the bronze versions UNL-12-10B and UNL-24-10B. If you want fail safe capability, order the FSUNL module alongside it.
6) Can I mount the HES UNL on an exterior gate or a door exposed to weather?
No. The UnLatch is not outdoor rated, so keep it to interior openings and weather protected exterior frames. Operating range is -10 to +125F [-29 to +52C]. For a genuinely outdoor or gate application, the Camden CX-ED1959 Series is outdoor rated.
7) What else could I use instead of the HES UNL for a cylindrical lock on a fire rated frame?
A few Grade 1 fire rated options for cylindrical locksets: the Von Duprin 4211 in 32D is fire rated Grade 1 heavy duty with 12/24 VDC field-selectable voltage, and the Hager 2930 is a fire rated Grade 1 dual voltage strike that handles both cylindrical and mortise locks with field reversible fail safe/secure. The Adams Rite 7240 is fire rated for cylindrical locksets with 5/8 inch latchbolt projection. What none of those match is the UNL's motorized pre-load release and its windstorm listing, so if the opening is under stack pressure or on a windstorm spec, stay with the UnLatch.
8) The opening is an aluminum storefront jamb - can the HES UNL be used, or is there a better strike?
The UNL is built for cylindrical locksets with a latchbolt and drops into a standard 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike prep, which is hollow metal and wood jamb territory. For aluminum jambs, the Adams Rite 7100 Series and the Adams Rite 7160 are made for aluminum jambs with a 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch faceplate. The HES UNL is built for cylindrical locks with a latchbolt, so on an opening with a mortise lockset the MUNL is the one to specify. Both are Grade 1 and fire rated, so a facility standardizing on UnLatch operation can run UNL on the cylindrical openings and MUNL on the mortise openings without changing platforms.
