The HES 1600 Series Electric Strike is the most advanced electric strike available on the market for cylindrical latchbolt and deadbolt locks. HES 1600-CLB 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I need to order a handed version of the HES 1600 electric strike?
No handing to specify. The 1600 Series strike is non-handed, and fail safe versus fail secure is selected in the field rather than ordered, so one part covers left and right hand openings and both power-off behaviours. That is what makes it practical to stock a single strike for a whole building.
2) Is the HES 1600CLB fire rated for a labeled door?
Yes, with one condition that matters: the UL 10C fire rating is 3 hour on a single door and 1-1/2 hour on a double door, and it applies in fail secure mode only. Set it fail safe and you no longer have the fire label. It is also CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104), NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 fire door conformant, and California Fire Marshal listed. On a fire door, wire it fail secure and release it from the egress side with mechanical hardware.
3) My door binds and the latch pushes hard against the strike. Will the HES 1600 still release?
Not reliably. The 1600 Series is not preload capable, so a door under pressure from a closer, weatherstripping, stack pressure or a warped slab can keep the strike from releasing when it is energized. Fix the preload at the opening (adjust the closer, the stops, or the door alignment) or specify a preload rated strike instead. Where the door closes clean, the 1600 handles the abuse: 1500 lbs static holding force, 70 ft-lbs dynamic strength, and 1,000,000 cycles of endurance.
4) What voltage and current does the HES 1600 electric strike draw, and can I run it off my existing access control power supply?
Dual voltage, 12 or 24 VDC/VAC, selected at the strike, drawing .24 amps at 12V and .12 amps at 24V. Size your supply off whichever rail you are on and multiply by the number of doors. One limit to respect: DC is continuous duty, AC is intermittent duty only, so anything held energized for long periods (a fail safe door on an access control system) has to be on DC. It is PoE friendly and uses ElectroLynx connectors, which saves splicing at the transfer hinge or door loop.
5) How do I get door position or lock status back to my access control panel with the HES 1600?
Order the monitoring built in rather than adding contacts later. Four monitored builds of the Complete Pac for latchbolts exist: 1600-CLB-LM with a single lock monitor, 1600-CLB-DLM with dual lock monitors, 1600-CLB-LMS with a lock monitor plus a strike monitor, and 1600-CLB-DLMS with dual lock monitors plus a strike monitor. Lock monitors tell the panel the latch is in the keeper; the strike monitor reports the keeper itself. If you need no reporting, the plain 1600-CLB is the base build. Monitors can also be retrofitted with the OPT-1LM and OPT-1DLM kits.
6) Can an HES 1600 electric strike be used on an exterior door or in a hurricane zone?
Yes on both counts. The strike is UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and suitable for outdoor use, and it is windstorm rated: ANSI/SDI 250.13 windstorm resistant, ANSI-ASTM E330, and Florida Building Code approved under TAS 201, 202 and 203. Construction is stainless steel and the unit is tamper resistant, which is what you want on a leaf that sees weather. It is also UL 294 listed for access control and ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1.
7) How deep does the frame cutout need to be for an HES 1600 electric strike?
Plan for a 1-5/8 inch deep pocket behind the faceplate, with the strike body 1-3/4 inches across and the metal-frame faceplate 4-7/8 inches. Check the depth first on a hollow metal frame with a filled or grouted jamb, because depth, not the plate size, is what usually stops an electric strike retrofit. If you are prepping several frames, the HES-MTK metal template kit is the accessory for laying out the cut.
8) What finish options does the HES 1600CLB come in, and will it match the lever trim on my other doors?
Seven finishes are orderable on the Complete Pac for latchbolts: 630 satin stainless, 629 bright stainless, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, and BSP black suede. 613E and BSP are powder coat, the rest are metal finishes. The faceplate, keeper, case and trim are all fully finished, not just the visible plate, which is why this one blends with lever trim and hinges in a way a raw stainless strike does not.
9) My old strike cutout is bigger than the HES 1600 faceplate. Can I still use it?
There are two adapters for exactly that. The 1600-104 lip extension trim adapter covers a longer or oversized lip cut, and the 1600-106 is the 1006 adapter and trim enhancer kit for retrofitting into a 1006 prep. Both are ordered in a finish to match the strike. Other accessories worth ordering with the job: 157 Torx screws for tamper resistance, the OPT-1SRK spring replacement kit, and the MOD-1SOL solenoid replacement module, since the 1600 is built with field replaceable components rather than being scrapped when a solenoid fails.
10) Should I choose fail safe or fail secure for a card reader entrance?
On the 1600 you do not choose at the order desk, you set it at the door, so the same part covers either decision. Fail secure keeps the door locked when power drops, which is the normal choice for a perimeter or tenant entrance and the only mode that holds the UL 10C fire rating. Fail safe releases on power loss, used where the door must free on a fire alarm or where egress depends on the strike. Note that fail safe means the coil is energized whenever the system is up, so it has to be on DC, which is the continuous duty rating.
11) Is the HES 1600 rated for a high traffic commercial entrance, or is it a light duty strike?
Commercial duty. ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1, 1500 lbs static holding force, 70 ft-lbs dynamic strength, and an endurance rating of 1,000,000 cycles, in stainless steel and tamper resistant. At an entrance seeing a few hundred cycles a day, that cycle count is the number to point at when a facility standard asks for it.
12) The latch does not sit flush in the keeper after I install the strike. Is there an adjustment?
The 1600 has a field adjustable integrated shim, so gap between the door and the frame is taken up at the strike instead of by shimming the plate or re-prepping the jamb. Combined with the interchangeable faceplates and field replaceable components, most alignment problems on the 1600 are solved without pulling the unit back out of the frame.
