The fire rated, concealed solution for cylindrical locksets. The HES 8300 Series Electric Strike is a fire rated, compact, high performance electric strike featuring a unique concealed design for use with cylindrical locksets. No cutting on the frame is required. Simply remove the existing ANSI strike plate, adjust the vertical alignment feature to the latchbolt centerline and install. Its strength is derived from a unique keeper pin locking design, enabling the HES 8300 to exceed the ratings of the frame, door and locking hardware. HES 8300C 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the HES 8300C electric strike work with my cylindrical lockset without cutting the frame?
That is the point of the 8300 Series. It is a concealed strike for cylindrical locksets that goes in where the existing ANSI strike plate comes out, with no frame cutting. The body is sized to drop into that existing prep, and a vertical adjustment lets you line the keeper up with the latchbolt centerline instead of re-machining the jamb. It will not work with a mortise lock or a rim exit device latch, only a cylindrical latchbolt.
2) What latchbolt throw will the HES 8300 electric strike accept?
Latchbolts from 1/2 inch up to 5/8 inch throw. The 5/8 inch case needs a 1/8 inch door gap to clear. If the lock on your door throws more than 5/8, this keeper will not release it cleanly and you need a different strike.
3) Can I put an electric strike on a fire rated door without voiding the label?
The 8300 Series is built for exactly that retrofit. It is UL 10C fire rated to 3 hours in fail secure mode only, complies with NFPA 80-07 for retrofit into fire rated frames, and is conformant to CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104), NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152. The catch a lot of people miss: the fire rating applies to fail secure. If you set the field selectable option to fail safe so the door unlocks on power loss, you are outside the fire listing.
4) Does the HES 8300C Complete Pac include the faceplate, or do I order that separately?
The Complete Pac ships as a one box solution, strike and faceplate together, so there is no separate faceplate line to add. Two builds are offered: the standard Complete Electric Strike Pac, and the LBM version with a latchbolt monitor if your access control system needs to see whether the latch is actually seated. One ordering limit worth knowing up front: Complete Pacs are only supplied in 630 satin stainless. The other 8300 finishes (605, 606, 612, 613, 629, BLK) belong to the non-Pac configuration.
5) What frames can the HES 8300 electric strike go into, hollow metal or aluminum or wood?
All three. The 8300 is listed for hollow metal, aluminum and wood door applications, and it is set up for metal and wood frame application. Faceplate choice is what tailors it to the opening: the 801 suits ANSI metal jambs, the 801A, 802 and 803 are for aluminum frames, the 801E has an extended lip for knock-down frames, and the 805 uses four point mounting for wood.
6) How much power does the HES 8300 electric strike draw, and can I run it continuously?
It runs on 12 or 24 volts and draws .24 amps at 12 VDC/VAC or .12 amps at 24 VDC/VAC. DC is continuous duty; AC is intermittent duty only, so if you are holding it energized for long periods (a fail safe setup, or a door on a timer) you have to feed it DC. Wiring is a plug-in connector rather than flying leads.
7) Is the HES 8300 strong enough for a high traffic commercial entrance?
Static strength is 1,500 lbs and dynamic strength is 70 ft-lbs, and it holds ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1, the top grade for electric strikes. It is also UL 1034 burglary resistant listed and suitable for outdoor use, so a perimeter or exterior opening is within its scope. The strength comes from a keeper pin locking design rather than a spring latch catch.
8) My door sags and the latch does not line up with the strike. Will an HES 8300 fix that?
Vertical adjustability is built in, so the keeper can be shifted to meet a latchbolt that sits high or low from door sag or a frame that is out of alignment. That is a field adjustment during install, not a special order. What it will not solve is latch preload: the 8300 is not preload capable, so if the door is under pressure and pushing the latch hard against the keeper (a door closer set heavy, stack pressure, a warped slab), you need a preload rated strike instead.
9) Do I have to order the HES 8300 handed left or right?
No handing to specify. The 8300 Series strike is non-handed, so one part covers both swings, which is what makes it easy to stock for a building where the openings are mixed.
10) How do I know from the access control panel whether the door actually latched after someone went through?
Order the LBM version of the 8300C. The latchbolt monitor is a factory option on the Complete Pac that reports the latch position back to your system, which is what you want on a monitored perimeter or a stairwell door where a latch resting on the lip reads as closed but is not secure. The standard Complete Pac has no monitor, and it is not something you add later.
11) Can I run the HES 8300 electric strike on AC power without it buzzing?
Feeding an electric strike raw AC is what makes it hum. HES sells the 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier for the 8300, which converts the AC supply so the strike runs on DC, and it plugs into the same connector rather than needing to be hard wired. If you actually want an audible signal at the door, the 2006M plug-in buzzer is the accessory that does it deliberately. Other plug-in options are the 2004M ElectroLynx adapter and the 2005M3 SMART Pac III.
12) Should I use a concealed electric strike like the HES 8300 or a surface mounted one?
Pick the 8300 when you are retrofitting an existing cylindrical lockset in a frame you do not want to touch, especially a fire rated frame where cutting the jamb is a problem. It sits behind the ANSI strike prep with the faceplate as the only visible part, and it is tamper resistant with the body inside the jamb. Go the other way, to a surface mounted or rim style strike, when the latch is not a cylindrical latchbolt, when the throw is over 5/8 inch, or when the door runs under preload, since the 8300 is not preload capable.
13) Which HES 8300 faceplate do I need for an aluminum storefront frame versus a wood door?
For aluminum, the choices are the 801A (4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches, radius corners, flat faceplate, with universal mounting tabs), the 802 (7-15/16 x 1-7/16 inches) or the 803 (6-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches), all with mounting tabs included. For wood, the 805 is the one, at 9 x 1-3/8 inches with four point mounting to get enough purchase in the jamb. An ANSI metal jamb takes the 801, and a knock-down frame takes the 801E with its extended lip. All of them carry ANSI/BHMA numbers E05031, E09321, E09322 and E09323 and all handle latchbolts up to 5/8 inch throw.
14) What is the HES 8300 strike body made of and will it hold up on an exterior door?
Stainless steel construction, and it is UL 1034 burglary resistant listed and suitable for outdoor use, which is the part that matters on a service entrance or a gate side door. It is not windstorm rated, so it should not be specified on an opening carrying a hurricane or windborne debris requirement.
15) Is the HES 8300 UL 294 listed for access control use?
