HES 8000C 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the HES 8000C electric strike work with my cylindrical lockset's latchbolt?
The 8000C takes cylindrical lockset latchbolts with a 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch throw. The full 5/8 inch throw only works where you have a 1/8 inch gap between door and frame; tighter than that and you need to be at the shorter end of the range. Measure the projected latchbolt on your existing lock before ordering, because that throw is what the keeper is built around.
2) I have a mortise lock or a deadbolt on the door. Can I use an HES 8000C strike?
No. The 8000 Series is built for cylindrical lockset latchbolts, 1/2 to 5/8 inch throw, and the keeper is matched to that latch. A mortise lock's latch and a deadbolt's bolt are different geometry and a different prep, so you need an electric strike specified for that bolt type instead. If your opening has a cylindrical lever or knob set, the 8000C is the right family.
3) Do I have to cut the frame to install an HES 8000 electric strike?
No cutting. The 8000 is a concealed design that goes into the existing strike prep: pull the old strike plate, set the vertical adjustment to the latchbolt centerline, and install. The vertical adjustability is there specifically to take up door sag and misalignment, so an old opening that has dropped a little still lines up. Metal, wood, and aluminum frames are all covered.
4) My door is under pressure from the closer and weatherstripping. Will the HES 8000C release under that load?
Plan on it not doing so. The 8000C is not a preload capable strike, so if the latch is loaded against the keeper by a positive-pressure opening, stack pressure, or compressed weatherstrip, you want a strike specifically rated for preload. On a normally hung interior or entry door where the latch sits free in the keeper, the 8000C is fine.
5) Is the HES 8000C fail safe or fail secure, and do I have to choose when I order?
Field selectable, both ways, so one part number covers either and the decision happens at the door rather than on the purchase order. Fail secure keeps the strike locked when power drops, so the opening stays secure and people still get out by turning the lever from the inside. Fail safe releases the keeper on power loss, which is what you want where the strike has to unlock on a fire alarm or power failure. Check what your egress and life safety plan calls for on that particular door before you set it.
6) What power supply does the HES 8000C electric strike need?
Current draw is .24 amps at 12 VDC or VAC and .12 amps at 24 VDC or VAC, and the unit runs on 12/24 VDC. On DC it is continuous duty, so it can sit energized. On AC it is intermittent duty only, which means it is not meant to be held energized on an AC feed. If your existing transformer is AC and you need continuous holding, the 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier is the series accessory for that. Connection at the strike is a plug-in connector, so there is no splicing inside the frame.
7) What is the difference between the HES 8000C and the 8000C-LBM?
The LBM version adds a latchbolt monitor. That contact tells your access control panel or alarm whether the latchbolt is actually projected into the keeper, so you can tell a genuinely secured door from one that was pushed to but never latched. If all you need is a release at the door, the plain 8000C Complete Pac covers it. Both are the same strike otherwise, field selectable fail safe or fail secure and non-handed.
8) Which faceplate do I need for my frame with an HES 8000 strike?
The 8000C is specified with a 4-7/8 inch face plate. Across the series the choices are: 801, 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches, for ANSI metal jambs; 801A, same 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 with radius corners, a flat plate and universal mounting tabs, for aluminum frames; 801E, 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 with an extended lip for knock-down frame installs; 802 at 7-15/16 x 1-7/16 and 803 at 6-7/8 x 1-1/4, both with mounting tabs for aluminum applications; and 805 at 9 x 1-3/8 with four point mounting for wood. All of them are rated for cylindrical latchbolts up to 5/8 inch throw, so the faceplate choice is about the frame you are going into, not the lock.
9) Can an HES 8000C go into an aluminum storefront frame?
Aluminum frames are one of the three frame applications for the 8000, along with hollow metal and wood, and no frame cutting is required. For aluminum the faceplate options are the 801A, which has radius corners, a flat plate and universal mounting tabs, plus the 802 at 7-15/16 x 1-7/16 inches and the 803 at 6-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches. The catch on storefront is the lock, not the frame: the 8000 only works with a cylindrical latchbolt of 1/2 to 5/8 inch throw. If that door has a mortise or hookbolt lock, this is the wrong strike for it.
10) How much force will the HES 8000 electric strike hold on a pushed-on entry door?
1,500 lbs static strength and 70 ft-lbs dynamic strength, with a stainless steel body and a keeper pin locking design that HES says exceeds the ratings of the frame, door, and locking hardware around it. It carries Grade 1 under ANSI/BHMA A156.31 and is UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and UL 294 listed, and the unit is tamper resistant. For a commercial entrance that gets leaned on and pulled at, those are the numbers to hand the spec writer.
11) Can the HES 8000C be used on an exterior door?
Yes. The 8000 is UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and suitable for outdoor use, and it is rated for outdoor application. It is not a windstorm rated assembly, so if the opening has to carry a windborne debris or hurricane approval, this strike will not satisfy that part of the spec.
12) Can I put an HES 8000 into a fire-rated frame?
HES states the 8000 falls within the guidelines for retrofit into fire-rated frames, and because no cutting of the frame is required, the labeled frame's existing prep is not modified. The strike itself is not supplied as a fire rated device, so on a labeled opening it should be set to fail secure and signed off by your authority having jurisdiction, since a fire door has to stay positively latched.
13) Can I get the HES 8000C Complete Pac in brass to match the rest of my hardware?
Complete Pacs are 630 satin stainless steel only. The 8000 Series as a whole is offered in 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 bronze toned, 629 bright stainless and BLK black, but none of those apply to the Complete Pac. Since the strike body sits concealed in the frame and only the faceplate shows on the jamb, 630 next to brass lever trim is a common enough combination that most buildings live with it. If the jamb finish genuinely has to match, look at the 8000 Series in a non-Pac configuration.
14) Do I need to specify handing when ordering an HES 8000C?
Non-handed, so one unit covers a left or right hand door and you do not need to know the swing to order. Fail safe versus fail secure is field selectable too. That leaves one real decision on the order: the plain 8000C Complete Pac, or the 8000C-LBM with the latchbolt monitor.
15) What accessories can I add to an HES 8000 Series electric strike?
Four are listed for the series: the 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier, the 2004M ElectroLynx adapter, the 2005M3 SMART Pac III, and the 2006M plug-in buzzer. The rectifier is the one to reach for on an AC supply, and the buzzer gives an audible signal at the door when the strike is released. At the strike itself the connection is a plug-in connector, so the accessories land on that rather than on a splice in the frame.
