1) Will the HES MUNL mortise electric strike work with my existing mortise lock, or do I have to change the lock?
One MUNL works with most North American mortise locks, so in most retrofits the lock stays. The exception called out by Securitron: Sargent 7900 and 8200 locks need tab kit model STK-1 for retrofit installations. It is built for latchbolt locks and the latch and deadlatch positions are field adjustable, which is what lets it suit different lock brands.
2) Do I have to cut the frame to install a MUNL Mortise UnLatch strike?
No cutting or altering of the jamb. The Mortise UnLatch drops into the standard ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike cutout and installs fully concealed, so an existing prepped hollow metal frame takes it as-is. That is the whole point of the design: it is a same-prep swap, not a frame modification job.
3) Is the MUNL electric strike fail-safe or fail-secure?
Field selectable, but only with the FSUNL Fail Safe UnLatch module added. The base MUNL-12 and MUNL-24 are ordered as 12VDC or 24VDC units; the FSUNL is what makes them switchable between fail safe and fail secure, and on loss of power it runs a full unlatch or latch cycle depending on the mode set. If your egress or fire plan calls for the strike to release on power failure, the module is part of the order, not an afterthought.
4) Can I use a mortise electric strike like the HES MUNL on a fire rated door?
Yes. The MUNL is UL 10B and UL 10C Listed, carries UL/cUL GXAY.R18923 and GXAY7.R18923 as an electric strike for fire doors, and is NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 fire door compliant. It also maintains dead-latch function at all times, which is what a fire door assembly requires of the latching hardware. Note that fail-safe operation and fire doors are not usually compatible; on a fire rated opening you generally want it running fail secure.
5) What power supply do I need for a MUNL electric strike, and can I run it off the same supply as my other strikes?
Standing current is only 40mA continuous on either voltage, but the motor draw is what sizes the supply: minimum 700mA when operating at 12VDC and minimum 500mA at 24VDC. Securitron recommends a 1 to 4 amp supply to cover startup inrush and get reliable operation under pre-load. Sizing to the 40mA figure is the common mistake, and it shows up as a strike that will not release against a loaded door.
6) I have a cylindrical lockset, not a mortise lock. Is the MUNL still the right strike?
The MUNL is built around mortise lock retrofits and the 4-7/8 inch ANSI mortise strike prep. Several strikes with a similar 4-7/8 inch faceplate footprint are not fire rated, including the Adams Rite 7100 Series, the Adams Rite 7160, and the Adams Rite 7170.
