1) Does the SharkBite UIP45 union need solvent cement, or does it push on like a SharkBite push-fit fitting?
Cement. Despite the SharkBite name, the UIP45 is a PVC fitting with slip sockets on both ends, so each side receives 1/2 inch PVC pipe and gets primed and solvent welded. There is no O-ring or push-to-connect end on it. If you need a no-cement connection, you want a push-fit coupling instead, not this one.
2) What size pipe does the SharkBite UIP45 coupling take?
Both sockets are 1/2 inch, so it joins two runs of standard 1/2 inch PVC pipe, 1/2 x 1/2. It will not adapt between sizes, and it will not accept copper, CPVC or PEX.
3) Can I use the UIP45 to tie together two pipe runs that are already fixed in place?
