Klein Tools 861002 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will Klein Tools Skribes markers write on wet or oily surfaces?
Yes. The Skribes industrial black ink is formulated to mark on wet, dry, oily, dusty and abrasive surfaces, which is the reason they hold up on a live jobsite where a standard office marker skips. Surfaces called out include OSB, wood, concrete, metal and plastic. The ink dries quickly to cut down on smudging.
2) Does the Klein 861002 marker clip onto a hard hat?
It does. Each Skribes marker has an integrated clip sized to fit most hard hat brims, plus a lanyard loop if you'd rather tether it to a vest or tool bag. For an electrician working off a ladder, that's the difference between reaching for the marker and climbing down to find it.
3) Is the tip on these Klein markers fine enough to mark a cut line on conduit or a small layout mark?
Yes, the tip size is ultra fine, which is what you want for scribing a cut line on conduit, marking knockout centers, or numbering conductors. If you need a broad, high-visibility mark readable across a room, a chisel or broad tip marker is the better tool.
4) How many markers come in the Klein Tools 861002 pack, and what color?
Two markers per pack, both black. Model number is 861002. If you're stocking a crew or a truck, the count is two per package, not a single pen.
5) What happens to a Skribes marker if someone leaves the cap off on the jobsite?
The Skribes tip is rated for a 72-hour cap-off life, so a marker left uncapped overnight or across a weekend will still lay down ink. It is not a licence to store it uncapped, but it covers the normal reality of a marker sitting in a gang box with the cap misplaced.
6) Will these markers roll off a beam or a work table?
The barrel is triangular, an anti-roll shape, so an uncapped Skribes stays put on a sloped deck, a plank, or a bench instead of rolling into the dirt. Overall it measures 5.37 inches long, 0.65 inches wide and 0.57 inches high, so it sits flat in a pouch pocket.
7) What is the Skribes marker body made of?
Polypropylene. It is a light barrel, about 0.02 lbs per marker, and the plastic tolerates being dropped, stepped on in a pouch, and wiped down. The tip is built to resist clogging on rough surfaces like concrete and abrasive block.
8) Are Klein Skribes markers suitable for MRO and facility stock, or just electrical work?
They are general jobsite writing instruments, not electrical-specific. Klein lists them for construction trades, electrical install and maintenance, plumbing and HVAC, manufacturing, MRO, quality control and field service. For a facility storeroom that wants one marker on the shelf that handles damp or oily surfaces, the ultra fine black Skribes covers most of it.
