Steel City CI2604 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is a grounding bushing used for on a conduit run?
It threads onto the end of a rigid or IMC conduit at an enclosure and gives you a lug to land a bonding jumper, so the raceway is bonded back to the ground bus instead of relying on the knockout connection alone. The Steel City CI260 version is the insulated type, meaning it also carries a plastic throat ring that protects conductor insulation as wire is pulled past the conduit end, so you do not need a separate insulating bushing on that termination.
2) What else do I need besides the bushing to bond the conduit?
The bushing gives you the lug only. You still need the bonding jumper conductor sized to the circuit, and a landing point in the enclosure (ground bus or a lug on the can). The CI260 is supplied as the bushing itself, so plan the wire and the enclosure-side termination separately.
3) What is the difference between an insulated grounding bushing and a plain bonding bushing?
A plain bonding bushing is metal through the throat, so on a wire pull you need a separate insulating bushing or chase nipple to keep the conductor jacket off the conduit edge. The insulated type, which is what the Steel City CI260 is, builds that insulating throat into the same fitting. One part, one termination, and it is the type most commonly specified where feeder conductors pass through.
4) I need to standardize grounding bushings across a facility. Can I get one brand across all conduit sizes?
Yes. The Steel City CI260 insulated grounding bushing covers nine trade sizes in one family, 1/2 inch to 4 inch, all aluminum bodied, so an MRO or maintenance stock can be built on a single part series rather than mixing brands by size. Part numbers follow the trade size: CI2604 for 1/2 inch, CI2616 for 2 inch, CI2632 for 4 inch.
5) Is there a copper grounding bushing option instead of aluminum?
The Steel City CI260 is aluminum. If an all-copper path is required by spec, the ABB A-Series TGC2 is a copper equipment grounding bushing of the box-bonded type. Choose on what the engineer specified for the conductor and lug material at that termination.
