Steel City GSB 12 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is a Steel City GSB grounding screw with a pigtail used for?
The Steel City GSB is a green grounding screw with a bare copper pigtail lead already attached. You thread the screw into the tapped grounding hole in a metal outlet box or device box, and the pigtail gives you a bare ground conductor to land on a receptacle or switch ground terminal, or to splice into the box's ground group. The screw body is steel and the head is green so an inspector can see at a glance that it's the bonding point.
2) Does the GSB grounding screw come in both 12 AWG and 14 AWG pigtails?
Two pigtail gauges are offered: GSB 12 with a 12 AWG bare lead and GSB 14 with a 14 AWG bare lead. Match the pigtail to the circuit, 14 AWG for 15 amp branch circuits and 12 AWG for 20 amp, so the ground isn't smaller than the circuit conductors it serves.
3) Will a grounding screw with a pigtail work in a plastic device box?
No. A grounding screw needs a tapped 10-32 ground hole in a metal box, enclosure, or mud ring to bond to. Nonmetallic boxes have no metal to bond, so the ground wires are simply spliced together and run to the device. Use the GSB in steel boxes, metal plaster rings, and metal enclosures.
4) What is the difference between the Steel City GSB grounding screw and the ABB T-Series PowerMark Gold bond screw kit?
The Steel City GSB is a single un-insulated grounding screw supplied with a bare pigtail lead and sold individually, offered with either a 12 AWG or a 14 AWG pigtail. The ABB RH T-Series PowerMark Gold bond screw is supplied as a kit and is a T-Series item intended for use with that panel line. If you are bonding a metal box or enclosure and want the pigtail already attached to the screw, the GSB is the one to pick; if you are bonding within T-Series PowerMark Gold equipment, the ABB kit is matched to that series.
5) Is the pigtail on this grounding screw insulated or bare?
Bare. The GSB lead is un-insulated copper, which is what most inspectors expect for an equipment ground inside a metal box. If your job spec calls for a green-insulated ground conductor instead, this is the wrong version and you want an insulated-pigtail grounding screw.
6) Can I use one GSB grounding screw to ground both the box and the receptacle?
Yes, that's the point of the pigtail version. One screw bonds the metal box and its bare lead goes straight to the green ground terminal on the receptacle or switch, so you don't need a separate box ground screw plus a cut length of wire. If the box has multiple devices, splice the pigtail into the ground group with the device jumpers.
7) Is this sold as a single screw or in a box of multiples?
The GSB grounding screw is priced and sold each, so you order the exact count you need rather than a fixed bag quantity. It's made in the United States.
