1) What trade sizes does the Steel City XC 90 degree AC/Flex clamp connector come in?
Ten trade sizes, from 3/8 inch up to 4 inch: 3/8 (XC 890), 1/2 (XC 891), 3/4 (XC 892), 1 (XC 893), 1-1/4 (XC894), 1-1/2 (XC 895), 2 (XC896), 2-1/2 (XC 897), 3 (XC 898) and 4 inch (XC 8910). Each is sold individually, not in bags or cartons, so you can buy the exact count for the job.
2) Can I use the Steel City XC connector on both armored cable and flexible metal conduit?
Yes. The XC 90 degree clamp-type connector is built for AC (armored cable) and flex (flexible metal conduit), so one part covers both on the same job. It is a clamp-type body, meaning the cable or flex is captured by a clamp and screw rather than a squeeze-set screw against the raceway.
3) Is the throat on the Steel City XC connector insulated so I do not need a separate bushing?
The XC is an insulated connector, so the throat already has the insulating liner that protects conductor insulation as it passes into the box. You are not adding a separate anti-short bushing at the connector itself. On armored cable you still install the red anti-short bushing at the cut end of the armor per normal AC practice.
4) Which XC part number do I order for 1/2 inch flex, and which for 3/4 inch?
For 1/2 inch trade size, order XC 891. For 3/4 inch, order XC 892. Match the connector trade size to the trade size of the flexible metal conduit or armored cable, not to the conductor count.
5) Why choose a 90 degree flex connector instead of a straight one?
The 90 degree body turns the cable right at the box, which is what you want when the box is tight to a stud, a joist, a wall surface or an equipment enclosure and there is no room to sweep the flex around. A straight connector needs several inches of bend radius behind it; this one does not. If you have clearance, a straight AC/flex connector is simpler and cheaper to install.
6) What is the Steel City XC clamp connector made of, and can I use it outdoors?
Zinc die cast body. Zinc die cast holds up fine in dry and damp interior work, which is where AC cable and flexible metal conduit are normally run. It is not a liquidtight fitting, so for wet locations or anywhere water can reach the connection you want a liquidtight flexible metal conduit connector with a sealing gland instead.
