1) What trade sizes does the Steel City XC squeeze connector come in?
Eight trade sizes, from 1/2 inch up through 3 inch: 1/2 (XC 901), 3/4 (XC 902), 1 (XC 903), 1-1/4 (XC 904), 1-1/2 (XC 905), 2 (XC 906), 2-1/2 (XC 907) and 3 inch (XC 908). Match the connector size to the trade size of the AC or flex you are terminating, not to the conductor count. They are sold individually.
2) Can I use the Steel City XC squeeze connector on MC cable, or is it only for AC and flex?
It is built as an AC/flex squeeze connector, so armored cable and flexible metal conduit are what it is intended to clamp. The squeeze saddle grips the spiral armor and the insulated throat protects the conductors as they pass into the box. For other cable types, use a connector listed for that specific cable.
3) Does this Steel City connector have an insulated throat for THHN conductors?
Yes, the XC squeeze connector is the insulated version, with a bushing in the throat so conductors do not bear on a bare metal edge coming out of the armor. That is the difference between the insulated and non-insulated build of the same body.
4) Is the XC squeeze connector body steel or die cast? Will it hold up in a damp mechanical room?
Malleable iron, zinc plated. Malleable iron takes a wrench and clamp load without cracking the way die cast zinc can, and the zinc plating is the corrosion coating for normal indoor and damp locations. It is not a wet location or corrosive service fitting on its own.
5) Which size XC connector do I use for 1/2 inch flex on a light fixture whip?
XC 901, the 1/2 inch trade size. That is the common whip and branch circuit size for AC and flexible metal conduit. Step up to XC 902 for 3/4 inch flex feeding larger motor or equipment connections.
6) Do I need a locknut with the Steel City XC squeeze connector?
Plan on it. A squeeze connector lands through the knockout and is secured on the inside of the box with a locknut, so stock locknuts in the same trade size as the connector. The connectors themselves are priced and shipped one at a time, so build your count per termination.
7) Are the larger 2-1/2 and 3 inch squeeze connectors practical for big flex runs to equipment?
Yes, the line carries XC 907 at 2-1/2 inch and XC 908 at 3 inch, which covers large flexible conduit runs into switchgear, chillers and rooftop units. Malleable iron matters more at these sizes because the clamp has to hold a heavy conduit without deforming.
