1) What trade sizes does the Steel City XC squeeze connector come in?
The XC squeeze connector for AC cable and flexible conduit runs from 3/8 inch up through 3 inch trade size: 3/8 (XC 400), 1/2 (XC 401), 3/4 (XC 402), 1 (XC 403), 1-1/4 (XC 404), 1-1/2 (XC 405), 2 (XC 406), 2-1/2 (XC 407) and 3 inch (XC 408). Match the connector trade size to the conduit or cable trade size you are terminating.
2) Is the Steel City XC connector body steel or die cast, and will it hold up in a damp mechanical room?
The body is malleable iron with a zinc plated finish. That is a stronger casting than zinc die cast for large trade sizes, and the zinc plating gives ordinary indoor corrosion protection for dry and reasonably damp interior locations. For wet locations or direct outdoor exposure, use a fitting specifically rated for that service instead.
3) Do Steel City XC squeeze connectors come with a locknut, or do I order that separately?
The XC is sold each, as the connector only. Plan on the locknut for the box side and, where your spec or inspector calls for it, an insulated throat bushing or an insulated-throat version. Ordering a handful of extra locknuts per box of connectors is the usual move on a rough-in.
4) What is the difference between a squeeze connector and a screw-in (duplex) flex connector?
A squeeze connector clamps the flex or AC armor between a saddle and the body with one or two screws, so it works on both flexible metal conduit and armored cable and is easy to seat and re-tighten in tight quarters. A screw-in connector threads into the conduit spiral itself and only suits flex. The Steel City XC is the squeeze style, in malleable iron, and covers trade sizes up to 3 inch where screw-in styles are typically limited to smaller sizes.
5) Which XC part number do I order for 1/2 inch AC cable, the most common size on a residential or light commercial job?
XC 401 is the 1/2 inch trade size. That is the size that covers standard 14/2 and 12/2 AC cable terminations at boxes and panels. If you are standardizing a stock cart, 1/2 inch (XC 401) and 3/4 inch (XC 402) cover the bulk of the work.
