1) Will a 1/2 inch XC 491 connector fit a standard 1/2 inch knockout in a junction box?
Yes. The XC 491 is the 1/2 inch trade size, and 1/2 inch trade size fittings are made to pass through the standard 7/8 inch knockout found on steel boxes and panels. Match the connector trade size to the cable, and the knockout follows from there.
2) Can I use this squeeze connector on both AC cable and flexible metal conduit?
Yes. The Steel City XC connector is built for AC (armored cable) and flex, so it lands either one. The squeeze clamp closes on the cable or flex jacket and the threaded hub takes a locknut into the enclosure knockout.
3) Why use a 90 degree flex connector instead of a straight one?
A 90 degree body turns the cable right at the enclosure, so you can run flex tight along a wall, ceiling or unit cabinet without a long sweeping loop. Electricians reach for it where there isn't room to pull a straight connector plus a bend, typical at motor terminations, disconnects and tight panel gutters. Where you have clearance, a straight squeeze connector is the simpler and cheaper landing.
4) Is this connector metal or plastic, and will it hold up in a damp mechanical room?
It is malleable iron with a zinc plated finish. That gives you a cast metal body strong enough for larger flex runs and a plated surface for corrosion resistance in typical indoor and mechanical room conditions, plus a metal path through the fitting for bonding continuity.
5) Does a squeeze connector need a locknut, or is one included?
Squeeze type connectors land in a knockout with a locknut on the inside of the box. Order the connector and the matching locknut separately in the same trade size. These are sold each, so a panel with a dozen flex whips means a dozen connectors plus a dozen locknuts.
6) Can I standardize on one part for all the flex terminations across a building?
Not with a single number. The squeeze connector is sized to the cable, so a maintenance stock usually carries the small sizes for lighting and receptacle whips (3/8 inch XC 490 and 1/2 inch XC 491) and steps up to 3/4 inch XC 492 or 1 inch XC 493 for feeders and motor connections. The larger 1-1/4 through 3 inch bodies get ordered as the job calls for them.
