Thomas & Betts ALB-2 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What conduit does the Thomas & Betts ALB conduit body thread onto?
The ALB is a threaded conduit body for rigid metal conduit and IMC. The hubs are threaded, so you thread it directly onto the conduit run, no set screws or compression fittings involved. It is not intended for EMT unless you adapt to threaded conduit first.
2) Does the ALB conduit body come with a cover and gasket, or do I order those separately?
The body is what you get. Covers and gaskets are separate items, and you need them to close the opening and keep the run weather resistant. Order a cover and gasket matched to the same trade size as the body.
3) What trade sizes does the ALB conduit body come in?
Five trade sizes: 3/4 inch (ALB-2), 1 inch (ALB-3), 1-1/4 inch (ALB-4), 1-1/2 inch (ALB-5) and 2 inch (ALB-6). Match the trade size to the conduit run it lands on. Each is sold individually.
4) Can I use an ALB conduit body outdoors or in a damp location?
Yes, within limits. The threaded hubs plus a matching cover and gasket maintain a weather resistant conduit system. Without the gasket it is not weather resistant. The body itself is die cast aluminum, so avoid direct contact with concrete or heavily corrosive atmospheres where aluminum will attack.
5) What does the LB shape of the ALB conduit body do on a run?
An LB body takes the conduit from a horizontal run through a 90 degree turn to the back, the usual case being a run coming along a wall and then passing through it. The wiring chamber gives you a pull point and room to make splices, and the throats are smooth so conductors do not snag on the pull.
6) Will the cover screws corrode or fall out when I open the ALB body?
The cover screws are stainless steel and retained in the cover, so they stay captive when you back them out. That matters overhead or on a ladder, and stainless holds up better than plated steel on an exterior run.
7) Aluminum or malleable iron conduit body - which should I spec?
The ALB is die cast aluminum: lighter, non-ferrous, and a common choice for general exterior and industrial rigid/IMC runs. Malleable iron bodies are the pick where you want more mechanical toughness or where aluminum is a problem, such as contact with concrete, masonry chemicals, or certain chemical process areas.
