Thomas & Betts ALRL-2 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What trade sizes does the Thomas & Betts ALRL conduit body come in?
Two sizes: 3/4 inch (ALRL-2) and 1 inch (ALRL-3). The trade size is the conduit hub size, so match it to the rigid or IMC run you are landing on it.
2) Will an ALRL conduit body thread onto EMT?
No. The ALRL is a threaded body for rigid or IMC conduit. EMT is unthreaded, so you would need an EMT-to-threaded adapter or a body made for EMT connectors.
3) Does the ALRL come with a cover, or do I have to order one separately?
It ships with one die cast aluminum cover and retained stainless steel cover screws. If you need a weather resistant assembly, a gasket is the separate piece to add; the body and cover alone are what is supplied.
4) Will the Thomas & Betts ALRL work on EMT, or do I need the Arlington AnyBODY instead?
The ALRL is a threaded conduit body specified for use with rigid and IMC conduit, so the connection is threaded rather than set screw or compression. For an EMT run, look at the Arlington 934 AnyBODY conduit body rather than the ALRL.
5) Can I use a Thomas & Betts ALRL body outdoors or in a wet location?
The threaded body holds a weather resistant conduit system when it is used with its cover and a gasket. Without the gasket in place you do not have that seal, so for exterior or washdown runs order the gasket with it.
6) Why use a conduit body like the ALRL instead of a junction box at a pull point?
The ALRL gives you an accessible wiring chamber with smooth throats, so it works as a pull point or splice location inline on a rigid/IMC run without breaking out to a box and nipples. Where you need multiple raceways entering from several directions, a box is the better choice.
7) What is the difference between the Thomas & Betts ALRL conduit body and the Arlington AnyBODY 934?
The ALRL is a threaded die cast aluminum conduit body for rigid and IMC conduit, offered in 3/4 inch and 1 inch trade sizes and shipped with a die cast aluminum cover. The Arlington 934 is part of the AnyBODY series of conduit bodies. If the run is threaded rigid or IMC and you want the cover included in the box, the ALRL covers that directly.
8) I need a conduit body larger than 1 inch trade size - is the ALRL the right part?
The ALRL conduit body is built in 3/4 inch and 1 inch trade sizes, so for anything above 1 inch you need a different body. The Arlington 934 AnyBODY conduit body is the other conduit body to look at for that situation.
9) What is the ALRL body made of, and is it OK for a job with RoHS requirements?
Die cast aluminum body and cover, and the part is RoHS compliant. Aluminum means it is non-ferrous, so keep it off direct contact with dissimilar metals in corrosive environments.
10) Are ALRL conduit bodies sold individually or in packs?
Each. The ALRL is sold as a single unit, so order the count you need per opening rather than by carton.
11) Do I have to buy a cover separately with the ALRL conduit body like I would with some other conduit bodies?
No. The ALRL ships with one die cast aluminum cover, and the cover screws are retained stainless steel. It is sold each. The Arlington 934 AnyBODY is the other conduit body in the same role if you want to compare configurations.
