Metallics TRS1510 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the TRS1510 threaded rod galvanized or plain steel?
It is steel with a zinc plating (the "St-zn" in the designation). Zinc plating suits dry interior work such as trapeze hangers, strut, and equipment supports. For sustained outdoor exposure or wet process areas, specify hot-dip galvanized or stainless rod instead.
2) How does the TRS1510 ship, as a single rod or a bundle?
It ships as a bundle, listed as Bundle 1, so the order unit is a bundle of 10 foot lengths rather than a cut piece. Worth knowing before you order for a single hanger point, and worth knowing for the truck, since 10 foot rod will not go out in a small parcel box.
3) What is 1-1/2 inch threaded rod actually used for compared to 3/8 or 1/2 inch rod?
At 1-1/2 inch diameter this is heavy structural hanging and anchoring, not routine conduit or pipe hanging. Typical uses are large equipment supports, anchor bolt and epoxy anchor applications, tie rods, and heavy trapeze or machinery mounting. For suspended conduit, strut, and light pipe, 3/8 or 1/2 inch rod is the normal choice and far easier to handle. Order the 1-1/2-6 only when the drawing or engineer calls out that diameter.
4) Do nuts and washers come with the Metallics TRS1510 threaded rod?
No. The TRS1510 is rod only. Order 1-1/2-6 hex nuts, flat washers, and any couplings or rod hangers separately, matched to the same zinc finish so you are not mixing platings in one assembly.
5) Will a 1-1/2-6 coupling nut join two of these rods?
Yes, as long as the coupling is 1-1/2-6. Thread pitch has to match exactly; a 1-1/2-8 or 1-1/2-12 fine thread nut will not run on 6 threads per inch. Same rule for threaded inserts, anchors, and swivel hangers.
6) Can I cut the 10 foot threaded rod down to length on site?
Yes. Continuous all-thread is meant to be field cut. On 1-1/2-6 rod you are cutting heavy stock, so use a bandsaw or abrasive saw rather than a hand hacksaw, and chase or file the cut end so a 1-1/2-6 nut will start cleanly. Zinc plating is removed at the cut, so touch up cut ends if corrosion is a concern.
