Metallics TRS910 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread size and length is the Metallics TRS910 threaded rod?
The TRS910 is 1/2-13 threaded rod in 10 foot lengths, zinc plated steel. 1/2-13 means a 1/2 inch diameter with 13 threads per inch, which is the standard UNC coarse pitch for that diameter, so it takes standard 1/2-13 hex nuts, coupling nuts and strut nuts.
2) Will 1/2-13 rod work with 3/8-16 hangers I already have?
No. Thread size has to match exactly. The TRS910 is 1/2-13, so 3/8 inch nuts, couplings and strut nuts will not thread onto it. If your existing hangers, clevis hangers or rod couplings are 3/8 inch, order 3/8-16 rod instead of this one.
3) Is zinc plated threaded rod OK for outdoor or wet locations?
The TRS910 is zinc plated steel, which is a coating meant for dry interior use. It holds up fine in conditioned spaces and plenum areas, but for exterior, rooftop, wash-down or corrosive environments you want stainless or hot dip galvanized rod instead of electro-zinc plated.
4) Can I use 1/2-13 threaded rod to hang electrical conduit and strut?
Yes, that is the normal use for it. 1/2 inch rod is the common trapeze and strut hanger size for heavier conduit runs, cable tray and larger pipe, and it threads into standard 1/2 inch strut nuts, beam clamps and rod couplings. The 10 foot stick length lets you cut drops to whatever your ceiling height needs.
5) Do I need anything else besides the rod to hang a trapeze?
The TRS910 is bare threaded rod only. You supply the anchoring and the hardware: a concrete anchor or beam clamp at the structure, hex nuts and washers at each connection, and strut or channel if you are building a trapeze. All of that hardware needs to be 1/2-13 to match the rod.
6) Can I cut the Metallics TRS910 rod to shorter drop lengths on site?
Yes. It comes as plain 10 foot continuously threaded sticks, so you cut each drop to length in the field with a bandsaw, chop saw or rod cutter. Chase or file the cut end so the nut starts cleanly, and cut from the bundle as needed rather than ordering fixed lengths.
