Metallics TRS912 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread size and pitch is the Metallics TRS912 threaded rod?
The TRS912 is 1/2-13 threaded rod, meaning a 1/2 inch nominal diameter with 13 threads per inch, which is the standard UNC coarse pitch for that diameter. It mates with any standard 1/2-13 nut, coupling nut, or 1/2 inch channel nut, and it threads into 1/2-13 rod-hanger fittings used for conduit, strut, and pipe support.
2) Is the TRS912 threaded rod zinc plated or plain steel?
Steel with a zinc plating (the "St-zn" in the description). Zinc plated steel rod is intended for dry interior work such as conduit and pipe drops inside a conditioned building. For wet, corrosive, or exterior exposure, step up to stainless or hot dip galvanized rod instead, since cut ends on plated rod leave bare steel exposed.
3) Can I use 1/2-13 threaded rod to hang electrical conduit and strut?
Yes. 1/2 inch rod is one of the common sizes for trapeze hangers, strut supports, and conduit clamps, and the TRS912 is 1/2-13 so it takes standard 1/2 inch strut nuts, beam clamps, and rod couplings. You will need to supply the nuts, washers, clamps, and anchors separately, since the bundle is rod only.
4) I only need a few 10 foot drops. Is a 12 foot bundle of 12 the wrong buy?
If you need a handful of short drops, a 12 piece bundle of 12 foot rod is a volume buy and you will be cutting and scrapping. The TRS912 makes sense when you are running a lot of hangers and want to cut to length on site, or stocking a shop or MRO crib. For small jobs, buy pre-cut rod or shorter stock lengths instead.
5) What is the Metallics part number for 1/2-13 x 12 foot zinc plated threaded rod?
Metallics catalogs it as TRS912: 1/2-13 by 12 foot steel threaded rod, zinc plated, sold in a 12 piece bundle. Order by that number to get the 12 foot length rather than a shorter stock length.
