1) Will Trimco 1229A silencers fit a hollow metal door frame?
The 1229A is the metal-frame silencer in Trimco's 1229 series, so it's the one to order for hollow metal frames. If the frame is wood, order the 1229B instead; the two are not interchangeable because the frames take different silencer prep. For elevator cabs, the series also includes the 1229EL bumper.
2) I'm standardizing silencers across a building with both wood and metal frames. Can I use one part number?
No. Run two: the 1229A on the hollow metal openings and the 1229B on the wood ones. Same series, same grey rubber, but the metal and wood versions are built for different frame prep. Both come in multiples of 100, so a mixed building is two case quantities, not one.
3) Are Trimco 1229A silencers rated for commercial door traffic?
They're a commercial-duty part, made from high-grade rubber and used in office buildings, retail, hospitality, government and military facilities, and industrial buildings. That's the traffic level they're specified for, not residential-only use.
4) What does a door silencer actually do on a metal frame?
A silencer is a rubber plug set into the frame stop that the door face strikes when it closes. It kills the metal-on-metal bang and takes the slam load off the latch and hinges. On hollow metal frames that's the 1229A. It is not a door stop and it will not hold a door open or protect a wall, that's a separate piece of hardware.
