1) Will the Trimco 3915 flush bolt work on a hollow metal door?
The 3915 is the metal door version of Trimco's 3910 Series manual flush bolts, so hollow metal is what it is built for. Within the same series the 3913 is the wood door model and the 3916 is the tall wood door version, so if the inactive leaf is a wood door, order one of those instead of the 3915.
2) Do I need one flush bolt or two on a pair of doors?
Two. A manual flush bolt like the 3915 holds the inactive leaf at one point, so a standard pair gets one at the top of the inactive leaf into the frame head and one at the bottom into a dust proof strike in the floor. The 12 inch rod on the 3915 covers a standard height leaf; Trimco will build custom rod lengths for openings that need a longer reach.
3) Which Trimco flush bolt do I order for a fire rated pair of metal doors?
Not the 3915. Within the 3910 Series the UL model for metal doors is the 3917-12, with the wrought version listed as W3917-12. If the opening is labeled, specify one of those rather than the 3915.
4) Is a manual flush bolt allowed on my opening, or do I need automatic or constant latching bolts?
Manual flush bolts are thrown and retracted by hand at the leaf, which suits a pair where the inactive leaf stays bolted most of the time: storerooms, service pairs, corridor pairs in office and multifamily buildings. If the inactive leaf has to self latch when the doors close, a manual bolt is the wrong type and you want an automatic or constant latching flush bolt. Trimco's 3910 Series manual bolts are rated commercial and are ADA compliant.
5) What finishes does the Trimco 3915 flush bolt come in, and can I match the other hardware in the building?
Seven finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. Those are BHMA finish numbers, so a property manager standardizing a building can order the flush bolts in the same number already specified on the locks and hinges. Trimco also custom orders the 3910 Series for special applications.
6) Can I use a flush bolt on a pair of wood doors with a rounded corner mortise?
The 3915 is the metal door bolt, so for wood use the 3913, or the 3999 corner mount with round corners and the 3999SE corner mount with square corners when the prep in the leaf is a corner mortise rather than an edge mortise. Wrought versions exist too, listed as W3913 for wood and W3917 for metal.
7) What holds the bolt in place once it is thrown, and will it drift open on a door that gets heavy use?
Positive spring action locks or unlocks the throw on the 3910 Series, so the bolt stays where you put it instead of creeping out of the strike. The finger is stainless steel and the body is a high density extrusion, which is what carries the repeated throwing on a commercial pair in hospitality or multifamily traffic.
