1) Will the Trimco 3916 flush bolt work on a tall wood door?
That is exactly what the 3916 is for. Within Trimco's 3910 Series it's the manual flush bolt for tall wood doors, while the 3913 covers standard wood doors and the 3915 covers metal doors. It's offered in 15-1/2, 24 and 40 inch bolt lengths, so on an oversized leaf you can reach the head from a normal operating height instead of stretching for the finger.
2) Do I need a dust proof strike with a Trimco flush bolt, and which one?
For the bottom bolt into a finished floor, yes, otherwise the mortise fills with grit and the bolt stops dropping. Trimco's 3910 Series includes the 3910 dust proof strike, the 3910N with no face plate, and the 3911 adjustable dust proof strike for floors that aren't dead level or where the undercut varies. The top bolt lands in a strike in the frame head, not a dust proof strike.
3) Manual flush bolts or automatic flush bolts on a pair of doors?
Manual bolts like the 3916 are thrown and retracted by hand at the inactive leaf, so they're the choice where that leaf stays shut most of the time, in commercial and industrial buildings, multifamily, hospitality and office work. Automatic flush bolts retract on their own when the active leaf closes, which is what egress code usually forces on a fire rated pair. If the pair is a labeled fire opening or a required exit, verify what the opening calls for before you commit to a manual bolt.
4) I have a metal door, not wood. Which Trimco flush bolt should I order instead of the 3916?
Order a metal door model. In the 3910 Series that's the 3915 for standard metal doors, the 3917 extruded metal door bolt, or the 3917-12 if you need the UL version. The 3916 is built for tall wood doors. Also in the family: the 3917ET extended throw bolt, and the 3999 corner mount bolt for wood doors with round corners (3999SE for square corners).
5) What finishes does the Trimco 3916 flush bolt come in?
Seven finishes, and all seven are available in every bolt length: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. If you're matching existing openings in a building, 626 satin chrome is the common commercial default and 613 the usual match for older bronze trim.

The finger is the part that gets worked every time someone opens the inactive leaf, and it's the part that fails first on cheaper bolts.
