Trimco TRI-3922-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Trimco 3922 surface bolt work on the inactive leaf of a pair of doors?
That's the normal application for the 3922. It's a heavy duty surface bolt, 8 inches long, that mounts on the face of the inactive leaf and throws into a strike at the head or the sill, holding that leaf fixed so the active leaf can latch against it. It ships with both a surface strike and a mortise strike, so you can use it whether you're surface-applying the strike to the frame or the threshold or mortising it in.
2) Can a Trimco surface bolt be padlocked?
Only the L version. Ordering the 3922 as the 3922L gets you the locking 8 inch bolt, which accepts a padlock with a minimum 1-3/4 inch shackle. The standard 3922 has no padlock provision, so if the plan calls for securing a stockroom, a gate leaf or a mechanical room door with a padlock, specify the L on the order or you'll get a bolt you can't lock.
3) How much room do I need on the door face for a Trimco 3922 surface bolt?
The 3922 measures 8 x 2 inches, so you need a flat run of at least 8 inches with 2 inches of clear width on the face of the leaf, clear of glass stops, panel moldings and any astragal. On a narrow stile aluminum door or a stile with applied molding that leaves less than 2 inches flat, it won't sit down properly.
4) What is the difference between the Trimco 3922 and the 3923 surface bolt?
Length, and that's it. The 3922 is the 8 inch bolt, the 3923 is the 12 inch. Both are the same heavy duty solid stainless steel, steel, bronze or brass construction with the same strike options. Go with the 12 inch when you need more reach up the door face, typically to get the throw into a head strike on a taller opening or to put the operating lever at a height that's easier to reach. The 8 inch covers most standard inactive leaf work.
5) Is there a Trimco surface bolt suitable for a detention or cell door?
The NYPV prison version is the one built for that. The 3922NYPV is a 5 inch bolt with torx screws instead of standard fasteners and additional spring and holding power, made for abusive environments like cell doors. The standard 3922 and 3923 use conventional screws and standard spring tension, which is fine for commercial and office work but not what you want in a detention setting.
6) Is the Trimco 3922 surface bolt rated for commercial use, or is it a residential barrel bolt?
Commercial. The 3922 is a heavy duty surface bolt in solid stainless steel, steel, bronze or brass, specified into commercial and industrial buildings, government and military facilities, multifamily and mixed use, office buildings, and detention facilities. It is not the light stamped barrel bolt sold for interior residential doors, and it's built to take the traffic and abuse those commercial openings see.
7) Do I need to buy a separate strike for a Trimco 3922 surface bolt?
No separate purchase. Each 3922 comes with both a surface strike and a mortise strike in the box, so the installer picks on site: surface strike screwed to the frame soffit or the threshold, or the mortise strike set into a drilled and prepped frame or floor. That covers both the head and the sill without a second order line.
8) Can I use a surface bolt instead of flush bolts on an inactive leaf?
You can, and the tradeoff is prep versus appearance. A surface bolt like the 3922 mounts to the face of the leaf with screws, so there's no mortising into the door edge, which makes it the practical choice on an existing door or when you're adding security to a leaf that was never prepped. Flush bolts sit inside the door edge and are invisible when the leaf is open, but they require routing the door. If the opening is fire rated, that's a decision to make against the door's listing, since bolt type on a labeled pair is governed by the door manufacturer's listing rather than the bolt alone.
9) What finishes does the Trimco 3922 surface bolt come in?
Four: 613 oil rubbed bronze, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel and 630 satin stainless steel. If you're matching existing hardware across a building, 630 satin stainless is the usual commercial standard and pairs with most Grade 1 lever and exit hardware already in the opening; 613 is the one to pick when the rest of the trim is dark bronze.
