The 3922 and 3923 Series Heavy Duty Surface Bolts are manufactured from solid stainless steel, steel, bronze or brass. Furnished with both surface and mortise strike. The NYPV prison version include torx screws along with additional spring and holding power designed specifically for abusive environments like cell doors. The L versions can be locked by a padlock with minimum 1-3/4″ shackle. Available in two different sizes, 8″ (3922) and 12″ (3923), these heavy duty surface bolts can handle any situation.

1) Will a Trimco 3923 surface bolt work on the inactive leaf of a pair of doors?
That's the normal use for it. The 3923 is a 12 inch heavy duty surface bolt that mounts on the face of the inactive leaf and throws into a strike, holding that leaf fixed so the active leaf can latch against it. It ships with both a surface strike and a mortise strike, so you can use it whether you are throwing into the head frame, the threshold, or the edge of the opposite leaf. Bolt body measures 12 inches long by 2 inches wide.
2) Is there a surface bolt that holds up on detention or cell doors?
Trimco makes the NYPV prison version of this bolt for exactly that. It uses torx screws instead of standard heads and adds spring and holding power for abusive environments like cell doors. Note the size difference: the NYPV comes as the 3922NYPV at 5 inches, not the 12 inch 3923 or the 8 inch 3922. If your spec calls for a detention-rated surface bolt, that is the model to order, and it is a different length than the standard rail.
3) Should I get the 8 inch 3922 or the 12 inch 3923 surface bolt?
Same bolt, different rail length. The 3923 gives you 12 inches, the 3922 gives you 8 inches. Length is about how far up the door face the bolt reaches, so pick by where you need the throw handle to sit relative to the strike point. On tall openings, a top-mounted bolt that has to be reachable from standing height is the usual reason to go to the 12 inch. If the mounting area is tight, say a narrow panel or a Dutch door leaf, the 8 inch fits where the 12 will not.

Commercial. The 3922/3923 heavy duty surface bolts are built in solid stainless steel, steel, bronze or brass and are used in commercial and industrial buildings, government and military facilities, multifamily and mixed-use, office buildings, and detention facilities. A light residential barrel bolt is a stamped part; this one is solid stock, which is why it holds up on a door that gets worked every day.
5) Do I need to cut the frame to install a Trimco 3923 surface bolt, or can I surface mount the strike?
Either way, and the bolt ships with both strikes so you don't order a second part. Use the surface strike when you are screwing to the face of the frame, sill, or opposite leaf and don't want to cut anything, which is the fast retrofit. Use the mortise strike when you can drill into the head frame or the threshold for a flush, concealed throw, which is the cleaner look and the one that doesn't sit proud enough to catch a foot at floor level.
6) How many Trimco 3923 surface bolts do I need per pair of doors?
Two on the inactive leaf is standard practice, one at the head and one at the threshold, so the leaf is held top and bottom. A single bolt at the head only leaves the bottom of the leaf free to flex under load. Each 3923 covers one location, so a pair of doors is a quantity of two, and each comes with its own surface and mortise strike.
7) What finishes does the Trimco 3923 heavy duty surface bolt come in?
Four: 613 oil rubbed bronze, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, and 630 satin stainless steel. If you are matching existing hardware across a building, 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless are the two that read as brushed silver, and they are the common commercial pairing with satin chrome lever trim and stainless push plates.
