1) What is the Trimco 4017-ED edge protector and where does it mount?
It is the edge piece that goes with the Trimco 4017 security door guard, the frame-mounted guard used on dorm, hotel and apartment entry doors to prevent the door from opening. The guard body itself fastens to the frame, with nothing screwed into the door. The edge protector is a small part, 2-3/4 inches high by 1-1/2 inches wide, and it goes on with adhesive tape rather than fasteners. It is offered in the same six finishes as the rest of the 4017 line, so it can be ordered to match guards already on the building.
2) Can a resident or guest use the Trimco 4017 door guard to prop a fire rated door open?
No. Trimco states the 4017 cannot be used to prop doors open, and it specifically cannot be used to prop open fire rated doors. It is a UL listed fire door accessory. For a hotel or student housing corridor where every guest room door is rated and self-closing, that is the point of the design: the guard secures the room from the inside without giving anyone a way to hold the door off the latch.
3) Does installing a Trimco 4017 door guard require drilling or boring the door?
Nothing fastens to the door. The 4017 guard attaches to the frame only, and the edge protector that goes with it is applied with adhesive tape, so the door leaf is not bored or through bolted. That matters on rated openings, where cutting the door is the part a facility does not want to do, and the 4017 is UL listed as a fire door accessory. Install is straightforward on the frame side.
4) Is the Trimco 4017 security door guard ADA compliant for accessible guest rooms and dorm units?
Yes, the 4017 is ADA compliant. That lets a hotel or housing operator run one door guard specification across the whole property, accessible units included, instead of buying a separate secondary latch for the accessible rooms. The guard is rated commercial duty and the finishes carry through the accessible units the same as the rest.
5) What finishes can I get the Trimco 4017 door guard edge protector in to match the rest of my building hardware?
Six finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. Those are BHMA finish codes, so 626 satin chrome will sit with satin chrome levers and closers already on the openings, and 613E is the one to pick against oil rubbed bronze trim. If the building standard is 626, order 626 and it matches the same code on any other manufacturer's trim.
6) I already have Trimco 4017 door guards installed and only need the edge piece replaced. Can I order just that?
Yes, the 4017 edge protector is ordered on its own, in whatever of the six finishes matches the guards already on the doors: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome or 626 satin chrome. It comes with adhesive tape, so replacing one on a turnover unit is a peel and stick job with no frame work and no door prep, and no one has to pull the guard off the frame to do it.
7) Is the Trimco 4017-ED a full length door edge guard that protects the whole latch edge?
No, and this is the common mix up. The 4017 edge protector is a small part, 2-3/4 inches high by 1-1/2 inches wide, that works with the 4017 security door guard. It is not a continuous edge wrap. If the problem is a chewed up or delaminating latch edge on a wood door, or edge damage from carts in a service corridor, you want a full height door edge guard cut to the door height instead, not this piece.
8) Is the Trimco 4017 door guard heavy duty enough for student housing and hotel turnover?
It is a commercial part, not a residential chain guard. Trimco builds the 4017 as a heavy duty door guard with die cast construction and calls out dorms and student housing, hospitality, and multifamily and mixed use as the applications. Those are the three places a secondary door latch gets the hardest use and the most abuse, which is what the die cast body is there for.
