1) Does the Trine 006RS electric strike need a jamb cutout, or does it surface mount?
The 006RS surface mounts. It bolts to the face of a metal or wood jamb, so there is no mortise prep or cutting into the frame. That makes it the usual pick when the frame is already installed and you don't want to pull the door or route the jamb. It is for in-swinging doors only.
2) What does the RS suffix mean on the Trine 006RS?
RS makes the strike fail-safe: it stays locked while powered and releases when power drops, which is what you want on an egress or emergency-release opening. Fail-safe is only available on DC, which is why the 006RS is offered in 12 VDC and 24 VDC. The base 006 without RS is fail-secure.
3) Should I order the 12 VDC or 24 VDC Trine 006RS?
Match whatever your access control power supply puts out. At 12 VDC the strike draws 0.40 amps at 30 ohms; at 24 VDC it draws 0.19 amps at 125 ohms. Both are continuous duty and silent operation. If you are running several strikes off one supply, the 24 VDC version is easier on the power budget.
4) Can the Trine 006RS go on a fire rated door or an exterior gate?
No on both counts. The 006RS is not fire rated and is not outdoor rated. For a fire door, look at a rated strike such as the Hager 2930 or the Von Duprin 4211, both fire rated Grade 1. For an exterior gate, the Camden CX-ED1959 is an outdoor rated gate strike.
5) What should I use instead of the Trine 006RS on an aluminum storefront jamb?
The Trine 006RS mounts on the surface of metal or wood jambs for in-swinging doors, so it is not the part for a narrow aluminum stile jamb prep. For aluminum jambs, the Adams Rite 7100 Series uses a flat 1-1/4 inch x 4-7/8 inch faceplate, and the Adams Rite 7160 uses the same 1-1/4 inch x 4-7/8 inch faceplate size. If the jamb is hollow metal or wood and you want that ANSI style faceplate rather than a surface case, the Adams Rite 7170 covers those jambs with the 1-1/4 inch x 4-7/8 inch faceplate.
6) I need fail-safe operation but the job may change to fail-secure later - is there an alternative to the Trine 006RS that can be switched in the field?
The Trine 006RS is factory configured fail-safe, so the function is fixed when you order it. If you want the function selectable at the door, the Hager 2925 offers field reversible fail safe/fail secure operation with a 5/8 inch latch, and the Hager 2928 offers the same field reversible function. The Hager 2945 is a rim exit strike with field selectable fail safe/fail secure plus a latchbolt monitor, and the Hager 2930 is also field reversible.

For mortise locks specifically, the Von Duprin 6210 is UL 10C fire rated at 24 VDC, and the Von Duprin 6400 32D is a Grade 1 modular strike for mortise or cylindrical locks carrying a 3-hour UL 10C rating in fail-secure.
8) My spec calls for a Grade 1 heavy duty electric strike - what are the alternatives to the Trine 006RS?
