1) Will the Trine 004RS electric strike work in a wood door jamb?
Wood jambs are exactly what the Trine 004RS is built for, new construction or replacement. It mortises in with a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the cavity it needs is 1/2 inch deep, 9/16 inch wide and 1-1/2 inches high. The face plate is 6-1/4 by 1-3/8 inches.
2) What does the RS suffix mean on a Trine 004 strike, and does it need AC or DC power?
RS is the fail-safe option: the strike stays locked while energized and releases when power drops. It is only offered on DC, so you power it at 12 VDC or 24 VDC. The standard 004 without RS is fail-secure and unlocks with power. Pick fail-safe only if your life-safety or egress plan calls for the door to unlock on power loss.
3) What latchbolt throw can the Trine 004 strike handle?
Up to 5/8 inch throw, figured on a 1/8 inch door gap. If your lockset throws more than that, or the gap is wider than 1/8 inch, the latch will not seat properly in the keeper. Mortise and cylindrical locksets both work within that limit.
4) Is the Trine 004RS fire rated or suitable for an exterior door?
No on both counts. The 004RS is not fire rated and is not outdoor rated, so keep it off labeled fire door assemblies and off weather-exposed openings. For a fire rated opening, the Von Duprin 6400 carries a 3-hour UL 10C rating in fail-secure, and the Hager 2930 is a fire rated Grade 1 strike for cylindrical and mortise locks. For a gate or exterior application, Camden's CX-ED1959 series is outdoor rated.
5) Is the Trine 004RS heavy duty enough for a high-traffic entrance, or should I step up to a Grade 1 strike?
The Trine 004RS is a light commercial strike rated at 500,000 life cycles with 1000 lbs holding force and only one moving part in the locking mechanism. For openings where a Grade 1 heavy duty strike is specified, the Alarm Controls AES-100 is a Grade 1 heavy duty electric strike, the Von Duprin 6400 32D is a Grade 1 heavy duty modular strike for mortise or cylindrical locks in satin stainless, and the Securitron MUNL mortise UnLatch strike is Grade 1 and fire rated. Locknetics MDS100 and MS100, both in US32D, are also listed as heavy duty.
6) What should I use instead of the Trine 004RS on an aluminum storefront jamb?
The Trine 004 is built for new or replacement installations in wood jambs with a 6-1/4 inch x 1-3/8 inch face plate and a 2-3/4 inch mortise backset, which is not a storefront profile. For aluminum jambs, the Adams Rite 7100 and 7160 series are both electric strikes for aluminum jambs with a 1-1/4 inch x 4-7/8 inch flat faceplate. The Adams Rite 7170 uses that same 1-1/4 inch x 4-7/8 inch faceplate but is intended for hollow metal and wood jambs.
7) The Trine 004RS is not fire rated - what fire-rated electric strike can I use instead on a labeled wood or hollow metal opening?
The Trine 004RS is a light commercial strike for wood jambs and carries no fire rating, so it should not go on a labeled opening. For a fire-rated alternative, the Hager 2930 is a fire-rated Grade 1 electric strike for cylindrical and mortise locks with 12/24VDC dual voltage, and the Von Duprin 4211 32D is a Grade 1 fire-rated strike for cylindrical locks with 12/24 VDC field-selectable operation. The Adams Rite 7240 is a fire-rated strike for cylindrical locksets with 5/8 inch latchbolt projection, which matches the same 5/8 inch throw limit the 004 works with. Note that fire-rated strikes are normally fail-secure on the labeled opening, so the fail-safe behavior of the 004RS does not carry over.
8) I need fail-safe operation but want to be able to switch it to fail-secure later - what are my options besides the Trine 004RS?
The 004RS is ordered as a fail-safe strike and the RS option is available on DC only, so the mode is set at the time you order. If you want the mode selectable in the field, the Hager 2925 and Hager 2928 both offer field reversible fail safe/secure operation, the Hager 2930 adds a fire rating to that same field reversible function, and the Hager 2945 is a fire-rated rim exit strike with field selectable fail safe/fail secure plus latchbolt monitoring. The Hager 2925 is listed with a 5/8 inch latch, the same throw limit the Trine 004 series works with.
9) Will the Trine 004RS work on a door with surface vertical rods or a rim exit device?
No. The Trine 004 is cut for mortise or cylindrical lock latches with up to 5/8 inch throw in a wood jamb, not for an exit device pullman latch. For surface vertical rod doors, the HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 is a complete Grade 1 electric strike pac for surface vertical rods. For a rim device, the SDC 30-4 Series is a 3/4 inch pullman latchbolt rim mount strike in stainless steel, and the Hager 2945 is a fire-rated rim exit strike. On a pair of doors, the Rockwood ESK-DBL is a Grade 1 double door strike with a 3/4 keeper.
10) My lockset has a 3/4 inch latch throw - can I still use the Trine 004RS?
No. The Trine 004 is limited to locksets with up to 5/8 inch throw, based on a 1/8 inch door gap. For a longer throw, the HES Folger Adam 310-1(X) is a Grade 1 electric strike body for 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch or 3/4 inch throw latchbolts and is fire rated, which covers all three throws from one body.
11) Do I have to order the Trine 004 strike handed?
No handing to specify. The 00 Series operates non-handed, so the same strike goes in a left or right hand opening. You only choose finish and voltage.
12) Will the 12 VDC Trine 004RS buzz when it is energized?
No. On 12 VDC it draws 0.40 amps at 30 ohms, runs continuous duty and is silent, with red/white leads. 24 VDC is also silent and continuous at 0.19 amps, 125 ohms, black/white leads. The buzzing options in the 00 Series are the AC ones, and those are intermittent duty only. Since RS is DC only, a 004RS is a silent strike.
13) Can I switch the Trine 004RS between fail-safe and fail-secure in the field?
No. Fail-safe is built in on the RS version and fail-secure is the standard 004, so the mode is decided when you order. If you want one strike that can be flipped either way on site, the Hager 2925 and 2928 are field reversible fail safe/secure, and the Von Duprin 4211 is field-selectable on voltage.
14) Does the Trine 004RS work with a cylindrical knob or lever lock, or only mortise locks?
Both. The 004 accepts mortise or cylindrical locksets as long as the latch throw is 5/8 inch or less at a 1/8 inch door gap. If the lockset also has a separate deadbolt, the top and bottom knockouts on the face plate let that bolt through, though the deadbolt still has to be thrown and retracted manually.
15) Can the Trine 004RS release a deadbolt, and what do I use if I need the deadbolt to open electrically?
No. The Trine 004 has deadbolt knockouts top and bottom measuring 1-11/16 inch x 9/16 inch so it can be used with locksets that have individual deadbolts, but those deadbolts cannot be released electrically - the strike only releases the latchbolt, on locksets with up to 5/8 inch throw based on a 1/8 inch door gap. If you need electric release of the bolt itself, look at a strike sized for a mortise lock body such as the Securitron MUNL mortise UnLatch strike or the Von Duprin 6210 for mortise locks, rather than treating the knockouts as a deadbolt release.
16) Is there an electric strike that avoids cutting the wood jamb the way the Trine 004 requires?
The Trine 004 needs a mortised pocket - 1/2 inch cavity depth, 9/16 inch cavity width and 1-1/2 inch cavity height at a 2-3/4 inch backset - behind a 6-1/4 inch x 1-3/8 inch face plate. If you are trying to avoid that prep, the Locknetics NC450 in US32D is a no cut electric strike. The Camden CX-ED1689L-4 is a low profile universal strike supplied with four faceplates, which gives you more coverage options over an existing cutout.
17) The Trine 004RS is not outdoor rated - what electric strike works on an exterior gate?
The Trine 004RS is a commercial indoor strike and is not outdoor rated. For gate and exterior applications, the Camden CX-ED1959 series is an outdoor rated electric gate strike. Do not substitute the 004 into a gate frame on the assumption that the powder coated finishes make it weather capable.
18) I need to know when the door is actually latched - does the Trine 004RS monitor, and what does if not?
The Trine 004 series is described by its holding force, cycle life and electrical characteristics, with no monitoring output in the 00 series feature set.
