Trine 2012CRS-12DC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Trine 2012RS electric strike on a fire rated door?
No. The Trine 2012RS is not fire rated, and a fail-safe strike unlocks when power drops, which is the wrong behavior for a fire door latch. For a fire opening, look at fire rated strikes such as the Von Duprin 6400 (3-hour UL 10C, fail-secure), the Hager 2930, or the SDC 45F.
2) What jamb and lockset does the Trine 2012 strike fit?
It goes into aluminum or hollow metal jambs, new work or replacement, with locksets having up to a 5/8 inch latch throw based on a 1/8 inch door gap. It works with mortise or cylindrical locks. The cutout it needs is 1-9/16 inch mortise backset, 9/16 inch cavity depth, 5/8 inch cavity width, and 1-11/16 inch cavity height, with a 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inch steel face plate.
3) What does the RS suffix mean on a Trine 2012RS strike?
RS makes the strike fail-safe: energize to keep it locked, and it releases when power is cut. Trine offers RS on DC only, so plan the power supply accordingly. Without the RS, the 2012 is the standard fail-secure version.
4) Will a Trine 2012 strike work on a door that is out of alignment?
That is what the 2000 Series adjustment is for. The strike gives 1/8 inch of horizontal latch adjustment to take up wider latch bolts and poorly aligned doors and locksets, and it releases under slight door pre-load, so a door leaning on the keeper still opens on a buzz.
5) What voltage do I need for the Trine 2012RS, and will it buzz?
It is sold in 12 VAC and 24 VAC builds in each finish. On AC the strike buzzes and is rated intermittent duty (6-14VAC draws 0.44-1.10A at 8.5 ohms; 16-24VAC draws 0.22-0.33A at 50 ohms). On DC it runs silent and continuous: 12VDC at 0.20-0.33A, 24VDC at 0.11-0.47A. Since the fail-safe RS option is DC only, a fail-safe install has to be on DC power.
6) What is the closest equivalent to the Trine 2012RS for an aluminum jamb with a 5/8 inch throw latch?
The Trine 2012RS is intended for new or replacement aluminum or hollow metal jamb installations with locksets having up to 5/8 inch throw at a 1/8 inch door gap, with a 4-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch steel face plate. Comparable aluminum-jamb strikes with the same 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch faceplate include the Adams Rite 7100 Series with flat faceplate and the Adams Rite 7160. The SDC 15 Series is a 5/8 inch latchbolt strike with 12/24 VDC operation, and the Dortronics 3300 Series uses a strike plate for ANSI prep at 4-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch with 12/24VDC.
7) I need a fail-safe strike but want the option to switch it to fail-secure in the field - what are my choices besides the Trine 2012RS?
The 2012RS is built fail-safe and that function is fixed, available on DC only. If you want the function selectable at install, the Hager 2925 is an electric strike with a 5/8 inch latch and field reversible fail safe/secure operation, and the Hager 2928 offers the same field reversible fail safe/secure function. The Hager 2930 adds a fire rating and 12/24 VDC dual voltage for cylindrical and mortise locks, and the Von Duprin 4211 32D is field-selectable for 12/24 VDC.
8) Can I use the Trine 2012RS on an exterior gate or a rim exit device?
No. The Trine 2012RS is not outdoor rated and is prepped for mortise or cylindrical locksets in an aluminum or hollow metal jamb. For an exterior gate, the Camden CX-ED1959 Series is an outdoor rated electric gate strike. For a rim exit device, the Hager 2945 is a fire rated rim exit strike with field selectable fail safe/fail secure and latchbolt monitor, and the SDC 30-4 Series is a rim mount strike for a 3/4 inch Pullman latchbolt in stainless steel. For surface vertical rods, the HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 is a complete strike pac.
9) My latch throw is 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch, not 5/8 inch - is the Trine 2012RS still right?
The Trine 2012 is specified for locksets with up to 5/8 inch throw based on a 1/8 inch door gap, so a longer bolt is outside its range. For a 1/2 inch latchbolt, the SDC 25 Series is built for that projection. For a 3/4 inch bolt, the SDC 30-4 Series takes a 3/4 inch Pullman latchbolt and the HES Folger Adam 310-1(X) strike body accepts 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch or 3/4 inch throw latchbolts.
10) Is the RCI 15BS the same thing as a Trine 2012RS?
They are not interchangeable on function. The Trine 2012RS is fail-safe, meaning the keeper releases when power is removed. The RCI 15BS is an economy electric strike for special offset latch entry with fail-secure operation, so it stays locked without power and is prepped for an offset latch rather than a standard 5/8 inch throw in an aluminum or hollow metal jamb. Choose by which state the opening must default to when power drops.
11) Does the Trine 2012 electric strike need to be handed?
No handing to specify. The 2000 Series is non-handed, so the same unit covers left and right hand openings, which makes it easier to stock one part across a building.
12) Can the Trine 2012 be used on an exterior gate or outdoor opening?
No, it is not outdoor rated. For a gate or weather-exposed opening, the Camden CX-ED1959 Series is the outdoor rated gate strike in the same category.
13) The Trine 2012RS is a light commercial strike - what is the heavy duty or Grade 1 step up?
The Trine 2012RS is a light commercial electric strike rated for 500,000 life cycles with 900 lbs holding force. For a heavier-traffic opening, the Alarm Controls AES-100 is a Grade 1 heavy duty electric strike, the Locknetics MDS100 and MS100 are heavy duty strikes, and the Von Duprin 6210 is a heavy duty Grade 1 strike for mortise locks at 24 VDC fail-secure with a UL 10C fire rating. The Securitron MUNL Mortise UnLatch is also Grade 1.
14) I need latch monitoring on an access control door - does the Trine 2012RS do that, and what does if not?
The Trine 2012RS uses screw terminals for the power connection and does not include a monitoring switch. For latch or door status feedback, the Dortronics 3300 Series includes a latch bolt sensing switch with a 4-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch ANSI strike plate, the Camden CX-ED1799L-8 is a fire rated dual monitor Grade 1 strike supplied with eight faceplates, and the Hager 2945 includes a latchbolt monitor.
15) I do not want to cut the existing jamb - is there an alternative to the Trine 2012RS?
The Trine 2012 is prepped for new or replacement aluminum or hollow metal jambs with a 4-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch face plate, a 1-9/16 inch mortise backset and a 9/16 inch cavity depth, so the jamb has to accept that cavity. The Locknetics NC450 is a no cut electric strike. The Camden CX-ED1689L-4 is a fire rated universal low profile strike supplied with four faceplates, which gives more prep coverage on a retrofit.
16) What should I use instead of the Trine 2012RS on a pair of doors with an inactive leaf?
The Trine 2012 is a single jamb-mounted strike for aluminum or hollow metal jambs with mortise or cylindrical locksets. For a double-door application, the Rockwood electric strike is built for double doors with a 3/4 keeper and is a fire rated Grade 1 unit in the 310-1 Series.
17) I need one strike model that covers both cylindrical and mortise locks across a building - how does the Trine 2012RS compare?
The Trine 2012RS accepts mortise or cylindrical locksets with up to 5/8 inch throw and offers 1/8 inch horizontal latch adjustment for wider latch bolts and poorly aligned doors, with non-handed operation. For a standardization program that also needs a fire rating, the Von Duprin 6400 32D is a Grade 1 modular strike for mortise or cylindrical locks, the Hager 2930 is a fire rated Grade 1 strike for cylindrical and mortise locks with 12/24VDC dual voltage, and the Camden CX-ED1410 and CX-ED1420 are universal Grade 1 ANSI fire-rated strikes.
18) What finishes does the Trine 2012 strike come in?
Three: brass powder coated (2012), satin chrome 626/BHMA 652 (2012C), and dark bronze powder coated (2012DB). Each is offered in 12 VAC and 24 VAC, so match the finish to the other jamb hardware in the storefront.
