Trine 342-BR – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Trine 342 door switch be wired normally open or normally closed?
Both. The 342 is field selectable N/O or N/C, so one part covers a request to exit button that pulses a mag lock release and a switch that has to break a circuit instead. You set it at install, not at order time, which means you can stock a single switch for both jobs across a building.
2) I need a switch that stays latched after it is pressed, not one that springs back. What should I use instead of the Trine 342?
Use an alternate action or maintained device. The DynaLock 6115A is a one pushbutton, 1 gang alternate action unit from the 6000 Push Button series, so the contact changes state on press and holds until pressed again. The DynaLock 6210 Series palm switch is also alternate action and switches SPDT. On the RCI side, the 908 Series RCI-908-RE-MA 32D is an electronic exit button with red EXIT text and maintained operation, and the 919 Series RCI-919-MA 28 is a rotary release button with maintained operation in a satin aluminum finish. The Trine 342 is field selectable normally closed or normally open, which sets which way the contact rests, not whether the actuator latches, so if the job calls for a latched state after release, one of those alternate action or maintained parts is the correct choice.
3) The opening is exterior and exposed to weather. Is the Trine 342 the right switch, or is there a better option?
For an exposed exterior location, look at the DynaLock 6171 Series, which is a weatherproof pushbutton with a blank faceplate. The Trine 342 is built around a stamped steel case with a powder coated brass face plate and four 7/8 inch knockouts, a construction intended for a protected interior mounting. Both are switches that break or make a circuit at the door, so the control side of the wiring is the same problem; the difference is the enclosure. The DynaLock 6171 also ships with a blank faceplate, meaning no legend is printed on it, whereas the Trine 342 plate is a plain narrow brass style with no marked text either, so neither carries an instruction to the user unless one is added.
4) What do I use for an emergency egress release instead of the Trine 342?
Emergency release calls for a marked device. The ACSI 1320-1-MOM-ER is a pushbutton switch marked Emergency Release, and the Securitron EEB is an emergency exit push button with interchangeable LED lenses. Both put the emergency function on the face of the device where an occupant can find it. The Trine 342 is an unmarked narrow style electric door switch with a powder coated brass plate, field selectable normally closed or normally open, and a switch rating of 120VAC at 10 amps and 250VAC at 5 amps. It is a general purpose door switch, not a labeled egress release, so on an opening where the release has to be identified as an emergency device, specify the ACSI 1320-1-MOM-ER or the Securitron EEB.
5) How does the Trine 342 mount and how does the conduit come in?
It ships as a switch with its own stamped steel back box, so it is a surface or recessed box mount rather than a plate that drops onto an existing single gang ring. The box carries four 7/8 inch knockouts, which is standard 1/2 inch trade size conduit or a connector, so you can bring wire in from top, bottom or either side depending on how the raceway runs.
6) I need a request to exit button but the 342 narrow plate is too small for my wall location. What else can I use?
The 342 is narrow specifically for stiles and jambs. On a wall or a standard gang box you have better options: the RCI 950 Series round push plate with the handicap symbol is a momentary switch in satin stainless for barrier free openings, and the DynaLock 6210 Series palm switch is an alternate action SPDT for a large surface anyone can hit with a hand or elbow. For a single gang alternate action button, the DynaLock 6115A covers it.
7) Does the Trine 342 work as an emergency exit release?
No, and this is worth being clear about. The 342 is a plain narrow style door switch with no emergency marking, no cover and no tamper feature. For a marked emergency release you want a device built for it: the ACSI 1320-1-MOM-ER is a pushbutton marked Emergency Release, the Securitron EEB is an emergency exit push button with interchangeable LED lenses, and the RCI 908 Series is an electronic exit button with red EXIT text and maintained operation.
8) Is the Trine 342 rated for outdoor or wet locations?
The 342 is an interior switch in a stamped steel box, not a weatherproof one. For an exterior gate, loading dock or anywhere it gets rain, the DynaLock 6171 Series is a weatherproof pushbutton with a blank faceplate and is the right family for that location.
9) I want the switch to stay on when pressed, not just pulse. Does the Trine 342 do that?
The 342 is sold as a door switch with field selectable N/O or N/C contacts, not as a maintained or alternate action button. If you need the contact to latch and hold, look at a maintained or alternate action device instead: the RCI 919 Series rotary release button has maintained operation in satin aluminum, and the DynaLock 6115A is an alternate action pushbutton in a 1 gang plate.
10) Should I use a push button like the Trine 342 or a keyswitch to release my door?
Two different jobs. The 342 is an unrestricted push switch, anyone at the door can operate it, which is what you want for a request to exit on the secure side. If only authorized staff should release the door, a key operated device is the answer instead, and the ACSI 1310-1 mortise keyswitch from the 1300 Series covers that. Buildings often use both: keyswitch outside, push switch inside.
11) Can the ACSI 1310-1 or the DynaLock 6300 be used in place of the Trine 342?
Neither one is a substitute. The ACSI 1310-1 is a mortise keyswitch from the 1300 Series, so it is key operated and mortises into the frame or door, which means a key has to be carried and cylinder keying has to be coordinated. The DynaLock 6300 Series is an audible annunciator running on 6 to 28 VDC, an output device that makes a sound rather than a switch that makes or breaks a circuit. The Trine 342 is a narrow style electric door switch, field selectable normally closed or normally open, rated 120VAC at 10 amps and 250VAC at 5 amps, and it is operated by hand with no key. If the requirement is keyed control, the ACSI 1310-1 is the right family; if it is an alert tone, the DynaLock 6300 is; if it is a plain hand operated switch on the door circuit, the Trine 342 is the one.
12) If I am standardizing switch finishes across a building, how does the Trine 342 compare to the alternatives on finish choice?
The Trine 342 covers a wide finish range: brass, bright chromium, bright chromium silver, silver grey, satin, and aluminum powder coat, with the standard face plate being powder coated brass. Among the alternatives, the RCI 950HP is satin stainless steel, the RCI-919-MA 28 rotary release button is satin aluminum, and the RCI-909F-MO rocker switch is beige. The Securitron PB4L Series pairs an illuminated halo with a stainless push button. So if a facility is being brought to a single look, the Trine 342 is the part that can be matched to several different existing finishes, while the RCI and Securitron parts each come in the one finish named for them.
13) What finishes does the Trine 342 narrow door switch come in?
Six: brass, satin, silver grey, aluminum powder coat, bright chromium, and bright chromium silver. The faceplate is powder coated, so if you are matching a run of doors in a building the brass and the aluminum powder coat are the two that usually pair with existing aluminum storefront and brass trim respectively.
14) Is the Trine 342 switch suitable for commercial buildings or is it a residential device?
Commercial. The 342 is built for commercial door hardware use, with a stamped steel case and a line voltage rated switch rather than a light duty residential button. It is the kind of switch that goes on office, retail and multi-family entries where the door gets used all day.
