Trine 004 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Trine 004 strike release a deadbolt electrically?
No. The 004 is made for locksets that have a separate deadbolt, and the deadbolt cannot be released electrically. The top and bottom knockouts, 1-11/16 by 9/16 inch each, are there so the deadbolt has a place to land in the same plate, but throwing that bolt locks the door down mechanically until someone retracts it with a key or thumbturn. Only the latchbolt is controlled by the strike.
2) What latchbolt throw will the Trine 004 accept?
Up to 5/8 inch, figured on a 1/8 inch gap between door and frame. A standard cylindrical lockset latch at 1/2 inch and a mortise latch at 5/8 inch both fall inside that. If your gap runs wider than 1/8 inch, the effective engagement drops, so measure the gap before you commit. The mortise backset on the plate is 2-3/4 inches.
3) Is the Trine 004 fail secure or fail safe, and can I get it the other way?
As catalogued the 004 is fail secure, so the door stays locked when power drops and you still get free egress from the inside. Fail safe is available by adding the RS suffix to the model number, but RS runs on DC only. The base 004 is an 8-16VAC unit, so if you need fail safe you are moving to a DC supply. If you would rather decide in the field, the Hager 2925 and 2928 are field reversible between fail safe and fail secure.
4) What power supply does the Trine 004 electric strike need?
It runs on 8 to 16 volts AC. That is the continuous-duty AC band, which is why the unit buzzes when energized, normal behavior on an AC strike. If your access control panel or power supply only outputs DC, the base 004 is not the match, and you would be looking at a DC unit such as the SDC 15 Series, which runs 12/24 VDC.
5) Can I use the Trine 004 on a fire rated door?
The 004 is carried as fire rated. Note it is a fail secure unit in its base form, which is the configuration fire doors require since the latch has to stay engaged with power off. The RS fail safe version is not appropriate on a fire rated opening.
6) The jamb is aluminum, not wood. What electric strike should I use instead of the Trine 004?
The Trine 004 is intended for new or replacement installations in wood jambs, so an aluminum storefront jamb calls for a different body. The Adams Rite 7100 Series is an electric strike for aluminum jambs with a flat 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch faceplate, and the Adams Rite 7160 is also built for aluminum jambs with a 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch faceplate. Both are narrow-profile bodies sized to the stile depth a storefront frame gives you, where the Trine 004 uses a 6-1/4 inch by 1-3/8 inch faceplate with a 2-3/4 inch mortise backset.
7) Can I use the Trine 004 on an exterior gate, or is there a better choice?
The Trine 004 is not outdoor rated, so a gate or other weather-exposed opening is outside what it is built for. The Camden CX-ED1959 Series is an outdoor rated electric gate strike intended for that application. Keep in mind the CX-ED1959 is not fire rated, while the Trine 004 is, so they are not interchangeable in the other direction on a rated interior opening.
8) I need latch monitoring for the access control system. Does the Trine 004 do that, and what does if not?
The Trine 004 is a fail secure strike with an RS fail safe option on DC only; monitoring is not part of its feature set. For openings where the panel needs latch status, the Dortronics 3300 Series includes a latch bolt sensing switch on a 12/24VDC strike with an ANSI prep plate, the Hager 2945 is a fire rated rim exit strike with field selectable fail safe/fail secure and a latchbolt monitor, and the Camden CX-ED1799L-8 is a fire rated dual monitor Grade 1 strike.
9) What is the closest alternative to the Trine 004 that fits a standard ANSI 4-7/8 inch jamb prep?
The Trine 004 uses a 6-1/4 inch by 1-3/8 inch faceplate with deadbolt knockouts top and bottom, which is its own prep rather than the ANSI cutout. For a frame already prepped to ANSI, the Dortronics 3300 Series strike ships with a strike plate for ANSI prep at 4-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch and runs 12/24VDC, and the Adams Rite 7170 electric strike for hollow metal and wood jambs uses a 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch faceplate. Note the Dortronics also carries a latch bolt sensing switch, which the Trine 004 does not offer.
10) What is an equivalent electric strike if the door needs fail safe operation on AC power instead of fail secure?
The Trine 004 strike runs on 8-16VAC and is a fail secure unit; its RS fail safe option is available on DC only. If the opening has to unlock on power loss, look at strikes built for field-reversible operation instead: the Hager 2925 is a 5/8 inch latch strike with field reversible fail safe/fail secure operation, and the Hager 2930 is a fire rated Grade 1 strike for cylindrical and mortise locks with 12/24VDC dual voltage and the same field reversible function. Both put the fail safe choice in the installer's hands at the door rather than requiring a different model number.
11) Is there a Grade 1 electric strike alternative if my facility spec calls out an ANSI grade?
The Trine 004 is a commercial fire rated electric strike for mortise or cylindrical locks, but if the submittal names ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 explicitly, several peers carry that designation. The Von Duprin 6400 32D is a Grade 1 heavy duty modular strike for mortise or cylindrical locks, fail-secure, in satin stainless with a 3-Hour UL 10C fire rating for the fail-secure configuration. The Von Duprin 4211 32D is a Grade 1 heavy duty fire rated strike for cylindrical locks with 12/24VDC field-selectable voltage, and the Alarm Controls AES-100 is a Grade 1 heavy duty strike. All three are DC-driven designs rather than the 8-16VAC the Trine 004 takes.
12) Which electric strikes take a 5/8 inch latchbolt like the Trine 004 does?
The Trine 004 is sized for locksets with up to 5/8 inch throw based on a 1/8 inch door gap. Peers built around the same 5/8 inch latch include the SDC 15 Series value strike with 12/24VDC operation, the SDC 45F Series fire-rated strike with a radius corner faceplate, the Hager 2925 with a 5/8 inch latch, and the Adams Rite 7240 fire-rated strike for cylindrical locksets with 5/8 inch latchbolt projection. The HES Folger Adam 310-1(X) strike body covers 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch or 3/4 inch throw latchbolts if you need one body to span several openings.
13) I need a strike that will drop into several different frame preps without recutting. Is the Trine 004 the right pick?
The Trine 004 uses one fixed 6-1/4 inch by 1-3/8 inch faceplate with a 2-3/4 inch mortise backset and a 1/2 inch deep by 9/16 inch wide by 1-1/2 inch high cavity, so the jamb has to be cut to that prep. If you are standardizing one part across mixed frames, the Camden CX-ED1689L-4 is a fire rated universal low profile strike supplied with four faceplates, the Camden CX-ED1799L-8 is a fire rated dual monitor Grade 1 strike supplied with eight faceplates, and the Camden CX-ED1410/CX-ED1420 Series are universal Grade 1 ANSI fire-rated strikes. The Locknetics NC450 is a no cut strike if the goal is avoiding jamb modification altogether.
14) My power supply is DC only. What strike takes the place of the Trine 004?
The Trine 004 body is built for 8-16VAC. On a DC-only supply, peers designed for that input include the SDC 15 Series with 12/24VDC operation, the Dortronics 3300 Series at 12/24VDC, the Von Duprin 4211 32D with 12/24VDC field-selectable voltage, the Hager 2930 with 12/24VDC dual voltage, and the Von Duprin 6210 at 24VDC fail-secure. The Hager 2930 and Von Duprin units are fire rated, matching the Trine 004 on that point.
15) Does the Trine 004 work with a mortise lock or only a cylindrical lock?
Both. The 004 is set up for mortise or cylindrical locksets, provided the lockset carries its own individual deadbolt and the latch throw is 5/8 inch or less. For mortise applications the plate is cut to a 2-3/4 inch backset.
16) Is the Trine 004 a heavy duty Grade 1 strike for a high traffic commercial door?
The 004 is a commercial strike built for wood jamb openings, but if your specification calls out Grade 1 heavy duty, the options carrying that rating include the Von Duprin 4211 for cylindrical locks, the Von Duprin 6400 modular strike for mortise or cylindrical, the Alarm Controls AES-100, and the Securitron MUNL mortise unlatch strike.
17) My lockset has a 1/2 inch latch, not 5/8 inch. Does the Trine 004 still work?
The Trine 004 is specified for locksets with up to 5/8 inch throw, so a shorter 1/2 inch latch is a different keeper geometry question and is better matched by a strike built for it. The SDC 25 Series is a value electric strike with 1/2 inch latchbolt compatibility. If the opening instead uses a 3/4 inch Pullman latch off a rim exit device, the SDC 30-4 Series is a rim mount strike for that latch in stainless steel construction.
18) What looks like a substitute for the Trine 004 but will not work on a deadbolt opening?
The Trine 004 is used with locksets having individual deadbolts, with 1-11/16 inch by 9/16 inch knockouts top and bottom for the deadbolt to pass through, though the deadbolt itself cannot be released electrically. Strikes built around exit devices and vertical rods are a different animal despite the similar product name: the SDC 30-4 Series is a rim mount strike for a 3/4 inch Pullman latchbolt, the Hager 2945 is a rim exit strike with latchbolt monitor, and the HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 is a complete strike pac for surface vertical rods. None of those accommodate a separate deadbolt the way the Trine 004 prep does.
19) Is the Trine 004 heavy duty enough for a high traffic entrance, or should I step up?
The Trine 004 is a commercial electric strike for mortise or cylindrical locks and carries a fire rating. If the specification calls for a strike identified as heavy duty, the Locknetics MDS100 US32D and MS100 US32D are both heavy duty strikes, the Alarm Controls AES-100 is a Grade 1 heavy duty unit, and the Von Duprin 6210 is a heavy duty Grade 1 strike for mortise locks, 24VDC fail-secure with a UL 10C fire rating. The Von Duprin units and the Alarm Controls are DC designs, so the power supply differs from the 8-16VAC the Trine 004 accepts.
20) What should I use instead of the Trine 004 on a pair of doors with no mullion?
The Trine 004 is a single-keeper strike prepped into a wood jamb with a 2-3/4 inch mortise backset, which assumes a frame to cut into. For a double door application the Rockwood double door electric strike with a 3/4 keeper is a Grade 1 fire rated unit in the 310-1 Series built specifically for that condition. It is a different keeper size than the up to 5/8 inch throw the Trine 004 is rated for, so confirm the latch on the active leaf.
21) Is there a simpler fail secure electric strike than the Trine 004 for a basic interior opening?
The Trine 004 is a fail secure strike for wood jambs with three finish options: 004 brass powder coated, 004C satin chrome, and 004DB dark bronze powder coated. For a pared-back fail secure application, the RCI 15BS is an economy electric strike with fail-secure operation intended for a special offset latch entry, and the SDC 15 Series is a value strike for a 5/8 inch latchbolt on 12/24VDC. The RCI 15BS is not fire rated, so it is not a swap on a rated opening where the Trine 004 fire rating is being relied on.
22) What is the difference between the Trine 004 and a mortise-specific strike like the Securitron MUNL?
The Trine 004 works with mortise or cylindrical locksets and is prepped into a wood jamb with a 6-1/4 inch by 1-3/8 inch faceplate, a 2-3/4 inch mortise backset and a 1/2 inch cavity depth. The Securitron MUNL is a mortise unlatch strike, Grade 1 and fire rated, dedicated to mortise lock openings. The Von Duprin 6210 is likewise a mortise-lock strike, Grade 1 heavy duty, 24VDC fail-secure with a UL 10C fire rating. Choose the dedicated mortise units when every opening on the job is mortise; the Trine 004 covers both lock types off one part number.
23) What finishes does the Trine 004 come in?
Three: brass powder coat (004), satin chrome (004C) and dark bronze powder coat (004DB). The finish is called out by the suffix on the model number, so a dark bronze fail safe unit stacks both suffixes.
