Ideal Industries 35-923 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread sizes does the IDEAL 35-923 Twist-A-Nut tap shaft cut?
Six sizes, three per end. One tapping side covers 6-32, 8-32 and 10-32; flip it over for 10-24, 12-24 and 1/4-20. The sizes are marked on the tap itself, so you are not guessing which end you are holding on a ladder.
2) Is the 35-923 a replacement shaft only, or does it come with a handle?
It's the tap shaft assembly, sold as the replacement component. The ordering number is 35-923. If you don't already have an IDEAL handle from the 7-in-1 Screwdriver (#35-908) or the Conduit Deburrer (#35-083), you'll need one to drive it.
3) Can I use this to clean up stripped device box screw holes instead of replacing the box?
That's the main use. The high-carbon tap forms new threads, re-forms burred or damaged threads, and clears obstructions out of the hole, so a buggered 6-32 or 8-32 mounting hole in a box or mud ring can be chased back to usable rather than swapped out.
4) Are 6-32 and 8-32 the thread sizes used on electrical device and box screws?
Yes, and they're both on the 35-923. 6-32 is the standard thread for receptacle and switch mounting screws and most device box screws, 8-32 shows up on cover plates and larger box hardware. The second tapping end picks up the heavier 10-24, 12-24 and 1/4-20 threads found on strut, hangers and panel hardware.
5) Is the tap reversible, or do I need two shafts to cover all six sizes?
One shaft covers all six. The tap is reversible, with three thread sizes on each end, so you pull it, flip it in the handle, and you're on the other set.
6) What is the tap made of, and will it hold up tapping steel boxes?
High-carbon steel. That's the material called out for the Twist-A-Nut tap, and it's what lets it form and re-form threads in sheet steel boxes and fittings rather than just chasing soft material.
